This Q&A is pulled from a collection of questions posed to me by students of my Online Permaculture Design Course (PDC). Learn more with my free four-part Masterclass series, here:

Question:
In 8.34 "The Respiration of Earth" Geoff mentions that tribal people are aware of a connection between animals congregating underground and where rain will fall due to the exchange of energy. This fascinates me, can you elaborate further on where and how this can be observed? Where can I read into this more?

About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permacu...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

Wow! I had no idea that tides extended past beaches. Fascinating. Now that you explain it, it makes perfect sense, of course. You make me feel so painfully small.

Biodynamic calendars take this into consideration when prescribing planting times. Along with planetary alignments.

@@remediationstation3280 , biodynamic calendars?? Uuhhg! I have no idea what those are. If you were trying to help me feel larger, you failed. However, if you were trying to further pinpoint my ignorance and further illuminate my smallness of effect on the World, well then, well done. Hahaa. Sometimes I feel like this whole permaculture system is beyond my capability.

@@yLeprechaun phew, I'm glad that there's still people who are aware of just how small they really are. If only the scientific fraternity would catch on. Anyone who looks at the intricacies of nature and, on an intellectual level, doesn't feel utterly insignificant, has a serious, serious ego problem. In our highly indoctrinated, narcissistic, consumerist culture, with all its vested interests in not knowing exactly this, I reckon that your wisdom is HUGE, and is actually the basis of permaculture!

No... not trying to make it harder or make you feel worse at all. If you check on Amazon you can find a really easy to use calendar and booklet from a lady named Maria Thun. Its a great chart that just shows you what to plant on which days. No math or astronomy needed.

Biodynamics is very strict by itself. No importing soil or amendments and using herbs/flowers for nutrients in compost. But use their info along with Geoff's techniques and together they make it so so easy.

We had a well drilled in the Sacramento valley and when we caped it off exept for a pipe, the pipe was blowing a steady stream of air. The well driller said don't tell anybody or there will be a whole bunch of scientists out here studying it. I wish I could study it now to see if it was from the tidal effect or the aquifer refilling.

I had never thought about this, but of course if the gravitational pull of the moon can move the sea it can move water in aquifers etc. Ants feel the drop in atmospheric pressure before storms and build their nests up. Thanks Geoff

In some outdoor magazines in the US they publish "solunar" tables. They are based on tide charts and predict when the fish will bite. I live 1000 miles inland and have noted the correlation here. Not only in fish. But, gamebirds also are more active at these times.
