This is a huge misunderstanding and misinterpretation of this tradition. I am sorry that not even the Czechs do not know what it is with the whip is. "Pomlázka" (braided willow twigs) either comes from the word "pomladit" or the word "mlází"(coppice), ie both in the sense of something young, fresh. "Pomlázka" itself must be from young fresh willow twigs. Well, how to pass the freshness of the whip to girl? Touch her. Properly girls or women have to be slightly painlessly flick over the calves (because they have a skirt). The girls are then considered that their boys and men give youth a healthy reward by giving them an egg as a symbol of fertility... Instead of this the Americans and every other nations just saw that there was a tradition of beating women. They knocking his forehead, what we as troglodytes... (Sorry for Google English, I hope you understand...)

Musíš ale uznat, že je to dost přiblblá tradice, zvlášť když se podíváš, co se z toho v poslední době stalo. Spousta kluků to používá jako záminku k tomu chovat se jako hovada, známé polívání voňavkama mluví za vše.
@Stepan_H
@Stepan_H 7 лет назад
+Mattchester Ne, uznat to nemusím.
@matman000000

I hate this tradition but I agree that without context it may seems to be a cruel and barbaric habit. No offense, I don't judge people if they like this tradition. Ok, to break this down for everybody - women do not beg to be whipped. I believe it's sort of optional. The tradition is fading nowadays and it looks like this: women prepare Easter eggs or bake something good. Then the men come and gently whip around the willow whips while reciting these sorts of nursery rhymes. Finally, they are rewarded and go on to the next household. It's basically like carolling, except instead of carols there are whips and rhymes and instead of sweets there's pastry.

@@luminis6950 You see, if a girl goes for it, we do it gently. If she's running around and her mom is like: "Go, get her!" It's really hard to do it gently. I don't want to sound missogenistic, but it's just a tradition. Even if you don't like getting gently petted by willow, it takes 20 seconds and noone's gonna be aggressive if you don't scream and run around like a mad person. If you really hate it, you can hide. Noone's gonna be looking for you.

Always great for the women and girls to have their feelings about this tradition explained to them!!! She’s literally told you that no amount of hiding got her out of it but you’ve completely ignored that which makes me way more inclined to believe her. Also, I don’t think it would be such a valued custom here if the boys were being whipped and covered in cold water by bigger stronger boys and men - I think it would have died out years ago if that was the tradition.

The begging part is made up. It is just about boys going around the houses, whipping girls in exchange for some "reward", mostly eggs, sweets or spirits for older boys. The girls do not beg, they just let themselves be whipped :)
@hanavesela5884
@hanavesela5884 7 лет назад
That part is not made up.Girls really do beg in some villages including my village, because it´s considered to be shamefull if no boys came to whip you. It is said that you will dry up and loose health, beauty and your youth if you are not whipped with whip made from fresh green twigs.
@LL-yd8zz
@LL-yd8zz 6 лет назад
It's a missunderstanding, the whip is a bunch of twigs and they gently touch them with it on the back while singing a song, and also if they show up after 12:00 the girls can take a bucket of ice cold water and dump it on them.

I'm from Poland and we have this tradition too. Śmigus-Dyngus (also known as lany poniedziałek, meaning "Wet Monday") is a celebration held on Easter Monday in Poland. It is also observed by Polish diaspora communities, particularly among Polish Americans, who call it Dyngus Day. Similar celebrations are held in the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Oblévačka in Czech, Oblievačka in Slovak, both meaning "Watering") and in Hungary, where it is known as Vízbevető or Water Plunge Monday. Traditionally, boys throw water over girls and spank them with pussy willow branches on Easter Monday, and girls do the same to boys on Easter Tuesday. [Wikipedia]

Just to clarify, Most men are really gentle and it's just a symbolic whipping. Also this happens only in the morning, in the afternoon women have their opportunity for revenge (somewhere it's whipping the other way around or it's splashing with buckets of water and trust me, we can have pretty cold easter weather here). So it sounds barbaric but women get a bit of redness on their bottoms for fertility and guys get a pretty cold shower to stimulate their manliness and as long as we are okay with traditional bigender society, we mostly appreciate this duality for one day a year.

Its true. We in Slovakia have the same tradition. Boys (mainly the young) have long sticks made of willow wood and theyre visiting girls. To gently beat their asses for health and beauty and long life... and we also throw water at them for the same effect. Its tradition dating many centuries back. Its a festival like event. When the boys grow up they then accompany their kids (boys) to their neighbor girls, friends from school etc. Its a nice festival. The girls then give the boys a ribbon on their willow sticks to decorate them. And some sweets or somerimes money, and an painted egg.

The begging depends on a region. I am from Moravia which is southeast of Czechia. Here we had sort of unspoken competition among us girls. The one who got whipped by most guys was considered the one most desired after so we did ask for it from all guys if larger group came after us so none would skip us. And then compared the lists. Some guys took this duty also pretty seriously but most of my bruises were usually gone in less than a week. Also how much it hurts and how much you bruise depends on the material whips are made of. All guys were supposed to have freshly by them braided whips from young willow branches. Some were lazy and used dried up from previous years. One guy came after me with a whip braided from green rubber isolated electrical wires. That one hurt a lot but I got my revenge on him by spraying him in face and hair with nasty perfume. Girls were supposed to use those as rewards but we usually got the extra cheap nasty smelling ones from local store. He probably smelled like a denizen of a red district and had pink eyes much longer than it took for my bruises to heal so I considered that a win. 🤗 Some traditions might sound weird but considering there are some people that let repeatedly crucify themselves each Easter I don’t think our is all that bad. It has roots in pagan rituals of fertility.

People are so dumb. It’s a classic Spring fertility rite probably from pagan times. Boys are supposed to go into the woods and find a new sapling and make it into rod by twisting it together and then “hit” a girl with it since it’s a new sapling - hence new life - and it’s passing that on to the girl so she remains healthy and fertile. Yes it’s old fashioned but actually kind of sweet.

young willow branches - new grown in the spring, has new energy of life, that tradition tries to transfer that new young energy from little branches to a calves of women by gentle whipping and singing a song to women :) men gets painted egg, vodka shot or snacks as reward. You do couple village houses and you are drunk :D After lunchtime, its girls turn - if any man ring doorbell after noon, he can get big splash of water to his face :D thats the whole tradition. If the girl doesnt get whipped, that means she "may" get little older than the other girls. It has nothing to do with beating lol :D Dont judge a book by its cover. its lot of fun you would enjoy :)

It's one of the last tradition that still goes on, a lot of girls (especially younger ones) hide somewhere or just travel out of the town or even country. Of course it's that bad as it might sound, it's just few gentle whips. Also I love getting some treats after doing my job (sounds like porn lmao)... the best treat in my age is probably alcohol xd.

@smithryansmith

In the olden days, it used to be a way for boys and girls to interact. Traditionally, there wasn't as much contact between boys and girls, so Easter gave them a chance to let each other know if they liked someone. Girls could tie ribbons around the boy's sticks to show if they liked them. Nowadays, you only do it with girls in your family or that you know personally.

In the Czech Republic, Easter Monday is a public holiday and is celebrated in a unique way with a tradition called "pomlázka" or "šibačka." On Easter Monday, boys and men go from house to house with braided willow switches called "pomlázka." They lightly "whip" the girls and women in the household with the switches, symbolizing the whipping of winter and bad spirits away, and also wishing them health and fertility. In return, the girls and women give them painted eggs, chocolate, or a shot of alcohol as a thank-you gesture. The tradition of pomlázka is an old pagan custom that has been incorporated into the Christian Easter celebration. While it is mainly practiced in rural areas and smaller towns, it is still a popular tradition throughout the Czech Republic. So Don't judge.

This is bullshit. I am Czech and I would like to say that women do not beg for it. Guys usually chase them to whip them and then they get a shot of something in return. However, in the past some girls for instance poured a bucket of water as revenge. Also every 4 years when February has 29 days it should be vice versa. However, this rule is not usually followed unfortunatelly. Nowadays, people do it usually on in villages and it towns the tradition is not kept that much. It is fun though.
