Actually, what Kenny said was, “SOMETIMES when you win, you actually hurt yourself because you think you’re doing things correctly.” And that qualifier ("sometimes") embodies a BIG difference, message-wise, compared to what you attributed as Kenny's statement. And, in my view...it's that oftentimes tendency to undervalue nuance that causes unjustifiable takes and perspectives to be framed. Omitting "Sometimes" where reiterating Kenny's opening statement imbued a very different...a critical difference...insofar as what seems credible as to what Kenny actually meant. Kenny in no way - and I'm convinced Kenny very deliberately attempted to make this clear - in no way was Kenny insinuating that winning always translates to self-inflicted harm...which is exactly what your inaccurate restatement of Kenny's remark reflected. [I have to say...it bothers me how easily someone can find something they say being misquoted or misrepresented - and sometimes (not to say so in your case) misquoted intentionally, when repeated by others, that often leads to that someone having to defend something they never actually said or did in the first place.]

The main problem imo is that failure has such a strong, negative connotation behind it. Failure is 100% steps toward success, but it is still failure. If you expect to have a promotion this year but it's given to someone else, then you failed at getting that promotion (and that's completely fine). If you don't expect to be promoted but you work toward being better at your job and ultimately a promotion, you're not a failure because you didn't get that promotion. Giannis failed last year AND THAT'S OKAY, because failure is a step towards success in the future.

Giannis not viewing this season as a failure is why he’ll never be a top 5 player. His mindset is what sets him apart from a guy like Jordan. If Jordan was this softies teammate he would have demanded he would be traded. Jordan would’ve said he was a failure the other 9 years.

Great commentary. As a psychologist who only works with veterans, many who come to my office think similarly to Shaq, but they feel ashamed for the failure. We distinguish between a failed goal vs. a failed person in therapy all the time, as well as the definition of success. There are many ways to be successful, but usually it has to do with relationships, making good decisions/behaviors, and working hard.

It was an uplifting message overall and I know somebody somewhere needed to hear it. Love the takes from the panel as well. Simply put, there is no wrong answer. I’m kinda on Shaq’s side tho. The comments and sentiment Giannis made is actually not that uncommon to think. Every time someone asks, "Is this player a failure for every season they didn't win?" and the overwhelming majority say, "No." because of course they're not. Of course, we're always talking in retrospect of a player's career. I'm sure people in 1991 were skeptical and critical of Jordan's career as a winner when he hasn't won yet and is finally in the Finals against the Lakers against a team that has proven winners and Magic and Kareem had won all of their titles to that point. But seeing MJ's career from 2003 onwards makes it obvious it wasn't a failure. He's called by the majority of fans even today as the GOAT. This season by Giannis and the Bucks was for SURE a failure, they're the no. 1 seed and lost to an 8th seed lol. That just doesn't happen often. But, when Giannis retires, I'm sure that season won't even matter, he'll have multiple titles to his name.

@H3artNSoul
@H3artNSoul 11 месяцев назад
I 100% agree with what Giannis and the crew said. His individuality isn’t a failure; the playoffs were. Saying the season was a failure negates the wins they accomplished. From nail biter games to completely destroying the other team. Saying the season is a failure because they didn’t win the championship is also a matter of perspective. Some people that play in the NBA just love basketball. They love the competitiveness of the sport while others truly want to be a force to be reckoned with and be the best player in the world. Then there is Giannis. I like to believe he’s a combination of both. He wants to be the best player in the world and wants to improve his game everyday while also genuinely having fun playing it. It’s all about perspective and given Giannis’s background and how he came to be; he’s far from a failure. Does he want another ring? Absolutely but as long as he kept the perspective of some days are good and others are bad he remains grounded to reality and is being humble. Kobe, Jordan, Chamberlain, Shaq and James all have had bad games so what did they do? Perfected their craft and it shows. Giannis is perfecting his craft but it seems nobody is giving him the credit where it’s due. I promise you he will have another championship.

This was such a great segment. Glad you guys went back to it to dissect further. Best part being that you all had different and valid reasonings on how you felt about Giannis' thoughts. Props to the producers also for giving this much time on the topic. I feel like I lean both ways. With Chuck, if you look outside the game, there is no failure. You get to provide for your family playing the game of basketball. And he's right, he is quite successful despite no winning a ring For Shaq, I also get his view. #1 seed, top 3 in the MVP race all year, going out first round could be looked at being a failure as many had them winning a ring again. Whereas other teams, not winning may not be looked as big a failure (if a failure at all) if there weren't really in contention to begin with/rebuilding/retooling/etc. For the Bucks, they were basketball the best the entire way through. But props to Giannis also for even speaking beyond the usual canned answers. I'm sure the question was just meant to be the standard one you hear every year, but appreciated his response.

THIS WHY I LOVE THESE GUYS... Everyone had valid point. Shaq stuck to his view and did not waiver and they contributed honest thought provoking dialogue...We don't always have to be right and two truths can also exist...Excellent example of a conversation unlike the VIEW where everybody is yelling and trying to force people to conform...Kudos Guys LOVE YALL...

I think one thing Giannis was trying to convey is that no matter if they won the championship or not this is still their livelihood and this is their way of taking care of their families and things like that so it's still a success in that aspect no matter what the record is. They are able to take care of their families in a major way that is Success enough!!! Looking at where Giannis came from and what he came from, his success is undeniable!

Giannis just made them have the most philosophical discussion they ever had on this show. I call this a success That discussion alone will get you the Emmy

Kenny said the Realest Stuff from (7:47-8:13) I hope everybody can replay that part and really listen. He had the best take to me. I really needed to hear that 🙌🏾. Also SHAQ saying “failure isn’t always a negative connotation” 💯

This talk actually made me emotional because I do have the mindset like Charles and Ernie described as getting my self worth from just one part of life and constantly thinking I'm a failure.
