How do we know what kind of bears were in the Bible ?

What kind of bears lived in ancient Israel? How should we picture the bears that David fought as a shepherd? To understand the stories and symbolism of bears in the Bible, archaeologist Joel Kramer looks at the evidence.

Interesting personal note. My grandfather and his 6 brothers were peasant farmers in Romania in the interwar period. They also kept sheep. As youths they would often shepherd them. To protect themselves and their flock from wolves and brown bears they were usually armed with slings and pitchforks as well as torches at night. Even into his 80's the old man was still deadly accurate with a sling. He even carried one with him into Russia during ww2. I noticed on your map you don't depict the range of brown bears extending into Eastern Europe and yet there they are to this very day.

In the Elisha account, the "boys" would likely have been in their teens, based on the word used. Also, the fact that they were telling Elisha to "go on up" implies that they were threatening his life, as this happened shortly after Elisha's predecessor, Elijah, was caught up to heaven and Bethel was a major center of idol worship. The account mentions that 42 of them were mauled by the bears, which means there were at least that many of them present. God seems to have used the bears to rescue His prophet from a very dangerous situation.

@DamonNomad82 Thank you for that clarification, in the OP.. It helps a lot. I never understood why God & Elisha were so hard on the youths. If they weren't just taunting him about his baldness, but threatening his life, that makes sense. Also, if 42 were mauled, that implies a large crowd of youths, doesn`t it?
@DamonNomad82
@DamonNomad82 Год назад
@@missemily3264 I'm glad I could help! Yes, it does imply a very large crowd. Though the Bible doesn't say the total number of youths who were present, I would guess that there were probably at least a couple of hundred. Once the bears started attacking, the natural reaction for the rest of those present would be to flee as fast as possible. Thus, it is probable that for every youth the bears caught, several more had time to run away, as there were only two bears. It must have taken Elisha a lot of faith and courage to face a hostile crowd that size!

Hmn...interesting perspective; however, this sounds a bit like Apologetics. The text as written - using a concordance - explicitly states that they were "little children"; the Hebrew word there means small/insignificant. Teens are not little children; after I turned 13, I recall my own father remarking once that I had grown to his height, as an example (I was the same height as most other boys in my class). This is further driven home by the fact that girls become women at about 13/14 years of age (flower of youth, pursuant to 1 Corinthians 7:36). Perhaps if the text stated "children", yours _could_ be a valid point; but it states "little children." As for the "go on up" the text actually states that they were mocking Elisha - not threatening his life. Remember that Elisha had a double portion of Elijah's spirit; he could discern the spirit world and as such his perceptiveness was not bound by space and time. Those little children were either going to be wicked adults (or they had wicked parents - same thing, actually), or they were wicked in their past life and this was the judgment. "The children of sinners are abominable children". As you pointed out, Bethel was a major place of spiritual idolatry so the wicked parents could be the thing that doomed that wicked fruit.

"Grizzly" usually refers to a subspecies of North American brown bears, which are believed to have been named for their "grizzled" fur color. The Syrian brown bears that once inhabited Ancient Israel are much smaller, similar in size to North American black bears, and they are usually lighter colored. Being the same species, they should theoretically be able to interbreed with any other type of brown bear, including grizzlies, but they don't due to geographic isolation. They are still incredibly strong for their size and you wouldn't want to get into a fight with a bear of your own weight, no matter what the species!

Joel, I appreciate the work that you are doing. Here in the United States there are a growing number of people that call themselves Christian but their lifestyle doesn't reflect that name. I believe to these people see the Bible as a religious textbook and the name Christian to identify themselves as being a good person. Saul of Tarsus used the old testament to condemn Christians but after conversion used it to proclaim Christ. I pray that our Lord Jesus will use your work in archeology to bring the Bible to life and is more than a religious book.

A great point to bring up when trying to disciple people is hitting them with this question/information. How did the Roman Empire fulfill the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13? Revelation 17 confirms that it is Rome, and that Roman Catholiscism is the "mystery Babylon" religion. Have the Nations and governments been conspiring together for the last 3000 years going all the way back to Babylon? Did God appoint angels in places of power to carry out His will? Once you bring up the Roman Empire thing you can stump 95% of people, or atleast the youth. From there you can take advantage and win them over and/or put them on the path to researching the fulfillment of prophecy. It has yet to fail for me. Will I turn someone from their sin probably not, but I just planted a major seed in them that could spread to other people. if you are wondering about the Roman Empire thing there is a video here on youtube called "From Babyl;on To America" That covers this. There is also the RevelationTimelineDecoded website that helps. Of course the first thing that shows up when trying to research this is a Catholic website trying to debunk the claims, but Revelation 17 pretty much confirmed it.

I camped in the Western US for 5 months and many times I was alerted that grizzlies could be in the area and use caution. The Park Services demand that you store your food in steel boxes that they provide or tie it up in a tree. They do not want campers killed for their food. Black bears are more common but Grizzlies still roam in Idaho, Montana, Washington state and Wyoming. You are also instructed to take bear spray with you (still have mine) when you hike. They also provide instructions on what to do if you see a bear. In Idaho a Park Ranger told me she walked to work every day to the Ranger station, 1/2 mile away until she saw bear scat on her walk. Now she drives the short distance and she is trained in how to handle bears.

Few notes from this side of the "pond": technically we dont have grizzly "greybears" here. Browns and greys are different subspecies. Afaik greys have noticeable physical maximum size difference as well, like the reported 1000+ kg mass vs. the fattest ones here close to 500kg here, check out "Juuso" -bear in my country. The population map is faulty for brownbears, scandinavia and other north eastern european countries have them too. So those bears in Israel are unlikely to be grizzlies, but brownbears, or possibly some extinct subspecies.

In American Indian traditions, bear is healer. He's the spirit of the heyoka, the clown (but not a contrary), and family executioner. Laughter is medicine. As far as I know, no woman has had to execute anyone but I've heard of elder women who ordered that done. People of the Bear tend to be wise, solitary and given to deep thought. My father's longhouse was Bear. How he ever got tangled up with Mom, Doghouse (family joke) the Kanonasioni Gili Yu, is beyond me. Dog is Wolf, but as helper and is the oldest of the longhouses. Mom's family was mengwe, outcasts, and had a lot of nasty history. Bad enough that skinwalkers tend to avoid the people of her house. And, I'm tired and blathering, sorry.

It wasn't, it was an Atlas Bear. They're extinct now thanks to the Romans.

I live in Eastern Europe and there are brown bears as far west as Switzerland, mostly in the southern cantons.

Actually there was supposed to be A pear on the california flag, but there was a misunderstanding and they put a bear on it. Thats the official story I believe lol

I grew up in California, and I’ve never heard that story. I’m sorry, but I don’t believe it, at all. Plus, there are still brown bears in California. I knew because I grew up in the mountains in Southern California, and still have family living there.
