How Do We Learn BJJ ? (The Importance of Mistakes)

So this question comes from Steven M on Facebook and it was simply about How Do We Learn BJJ?
This is a seemingly simple but complex problem. And I'm not sure I answered it perfectly in this video.
As a new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach back in 2009 I spend a ton of time reading and digesting information on how we as humans learn.
In particular I started to study how we learn motor patterns (movement patterns), which if you break down BJJ. That's what we do.
During the Chewy ramble I touch on a few key ideas.
- The difference between learning a BJJ technique and knowing / memorizing it.
- The process of variation to uniformity to creativity / mastery.
- The trial and error process which is absolutely essential to Brazilian Jiujitsu.
- And the addictive quality of BJJ provided by the instant feedback loop during rolling.
I hope that the video is insightful or at least entertaining.
-Chewy

My coach hates it but I learned by allowing myself to be a easy test dummy. Letting people go for whatever they wanted. If I escaped or defended the position, I took note of what they did that allowed me to. If I didn't well, now I know what they did to make the position work. Tap, slap, bump and repeat.

I'm the same way. I let things go by all the time so I can work on things not just to win. My open guard got to a point where my coach told me to stop using it and work on my close guard. At that point it didn't matter if I messed up and they got thru my defense was more than good enough to get them back to what I was working on. Defense first, attacks are easy if you don't have to think about defense.

I started 5 months ago, along with Muay Thai. They are very different. Muay Thai learning is very much based on repetitive practice and building muscle memory and instinct. BJJ on the other hand feels more like osmosis. I don't really "try" to practice to learn it. It just seems to soak in by doing it over several classes a week. I'm picking it up just by doing it without thinking too hard about it. Muscle memory and osmosis.

Fantastic answer, especially regarding learning by trial & error, being able to clearly see cause & effect, and that full resistance is crucial to truly know what works & what doesn’t.

My mental capacity for being shown and failing to retain moves/information is only so big. After too many classes where the moves are outside of the normal positions I'll see in regular rolls I start to feel like it's not worth the lost sleep and potential injuries to keep beating a dead horse. I'll take a few days to a week off, rest, lift weights, then try to get mentally refocused enough to come back with a fresh willingness to learn. I realize as a white belt in a class full of all belts it's just gonna be this way, and I use other things I'm good at outside of the gym to help me put out of my mind the consistent difficulties I experience with trying to get good at jiu-jitsu. My goal is to start drilling once per week, and I have plans in order to make this possible, currently biding my time.

Attacks use more energy defend from bottom side control, build your frames strengthen your torso your ribs your chest get used to pressure , like it , it makes you stronger. start reversing position or start regarding sweeps then dominant position and submission train everyday rest when you must.

I thought that for a while too, but after all of the EA UFC games, I'm comfortable letting that desire go unfulfilled rather than being disappointed. Think BJJ is just too intricate.
@LokkesBoerlin
@LokkesBoerlin 6 лет назад
Yh I really don’t think that’d work. Too intricate and not kinetic enough. Unlike the old Fight Night games, which I think got Boxing really well, BJJ just wouldn’t translate. Less gaming time, more rolling time though!!!

I feel like I learned it from chewy that a good way to learn is to not use your A game in rolls with less experienced practitioners. I find when I focus on my A game I don’t try new things and I don’t really improve but after a few weeks of trying new things they start to become parts of your game.

So, I recently got my blue belt and felt that I didn't need it, but I was rolling with someone at least 50lbs heavier than me and much stronger than I am, he's fairly recent and has been coming for a couple of months, and I was giving him a run for his money. While I couldn't submit him and was on the ground most of the time, I was constantly avoiding him - putting him in guard, sweeping him, etc. We rolled for at least 5 minutes straight - this made me realize, that I am a blue belt.

How do you decide what technique you’re going to teach on any given day? Assuming there is no competition coming up, or one didn’t just happen recently. Does it depend on the belt colors of the people in that class that time? Or do you go on a strict/loose curriculum?

@@Chewjitsu so with any art we see variation on the standard form. Think of all the times you seen, "starry night" they are most likely a print of the same painting which is an exact copy but people also just remake this painting to show how they are different from Van Gogh. I'm not a boxer but I know there are different styles of boxing. Some like Mike Tyson who get close and hit fast and hard hoping to almost murder some one round one, but their are also boxers like Ali who keep distance and rope a dope and pick shots to wear down opponents. I've even heard of counter shooters who punch in time with opponent to deliver stronger knock out punches. BJJ is an art form so it should have variation and styles. Like I know a guy who dose a lot of leg locks, I've heard big guys never pull guard, I heard people talk about wrestling backgrounds vs. Judo backgrounds. I can invent some ideas on variation but because I'm new to the sport I don't know if I'm right or just having fun. Can you use your experience and knowledge to run through different styles of jui jitsu. Is a smash passer a person or just one move, can you counter sub, I've heard people called big-some-a-ma-bitch, can you be a triangle artist or must you simply be an artist with a triangle. Main question: can you talk about different styles of BJJ that you have seen? What is the style like? What is the person like who might try fighting that way? What are key moves or positions they may be best at? Is there a style that is more effective vs another? Are their weakness to one style or another?

Yo Chewy , really appreciate the content . I have a question tho , so roughly 4 months ago injured one my ribs during a fall , long story as to what happened but anyways I reckon there was slight fractures in the bone . The problem was made worse by training BJJ , but a couple of weeks I took a break from training BJJ . I'm really asking have you any advice for training BJJ with injured ribs . I'm a lightest guy in our gym and anything from side-control to mount even bigger training partners is painful. Basically I'm wondering should I still drill and lightly roll , or should I take more time out to heal . It's a dilemma because I love training BJJ and don't want my training partners getting a great advantage on me :{
@aqdjbcr
@aqdjbcr 6 лет назад
King Kong -Where do you get your protein?:D it’s possible you tore the connective tissue between ribs. I would definitely take a little time off to let it heal or your injury will get worse and you’ll have to spend even more time off. I would suggest working on framing and reguarding to prevent the big guys from establishing a deep side control on you. You can also look to turtle to avoid the pressure but you run the risk of giving up the back. I’m just a blue belt but that’s what I’ve found effective against guys who have 100 ibs on me(I’m 6’4” 190 so I’m not the smallest person)
@connlaffan6232

William Wright , thx for the reply man , I'm thinking perhaps just drilling is the way to go till things really heal up .

Hey Chewy, my question is this: I am a bigger guy at my gym. I try and minimize using strength and size when rolling with people smaller than me so that we both are able to learn. I try to avoid squashing people or controlling them for too long because I am worried it is only because of my strength and size. I am concerned that as a result I am not using my weight etc properly, and so when I do role with someone of a similar size there is the problem of translating what I have learned against smaller people to rolling with that bigger person. What do you think?
@danielcho3270
@danielcho3270 6 лет назад
I think this is a great question man. One thing, there is a newer killer purple belt who is a heavy weight (maybe 230lbs) with lots of competition success. He is very technical and definitely rolls lighter with smaller people but when he competes he is a killer and has made people tap to pressure.

@aqdjbcr

Hugo Rodrigues I think the first goal of a white belt is to learn how to survive so I would focus on guard retention. But I’m a guard playing leg locker so I’m kinda biased.

hello mr chew. im a white belt training bjj since 5months now and i feel i have the basics..yesterday i rolled with a non trained friend with no experience at all..but he was in control,so now im feeling frustrated and down..do u have any advice? thanks for the tips🙏
@aqdjbcr
@aqdjbcr 6 лет назад
I would suggest working on guard retention and guard attacks and sweeps. Untrained people are fairly clueless when it comes to passing guard or escaping mount. Also look for armbar opportunities, untrained people tend to try to bench press their way out of trouble. Oftentimes people learning jiu jitsu want to fight for top position and if you don’t know techniques to give you an advantage it’s just an athleticism contest

Sean Mage wow sounds like a ruff school. Training partners shouldn't be going full bore to cause that much injury. In training I'll let go of someone if they are not quick enough to tap. Control and position is more important than submission! Unless your in a street fight lol.

I'll be a white belt for ever, I've trained for a year and done well over 100 classes and I'm still utterly useless at bjj, my professor is amazing and everyone else in our gym is doing great, I'm progressing so slowly, I wonder if some people just aren't ever going to get good at bjj. I didn't start until I was 42 years old so maybe I just have to enjoy it and stop trying to get good. Basically jitsu is hard
@jimreily7538
@jimreily7538 2 года назад
Do you still train ? It would be cool to hear your perspective now. I'm pretty uncoordinated, I've got a bad memory for certain moves, it's hard to string moves together etc. But the way I see it is, if you can make even the most tiny incremental gains, you're improving, and if you're having fun, that's fundamental too. Fun first actually, or, enjoyment. Say you got stuck in side control, and even if you just realised "okay, my escape isn't working", that's an improvement. There's millions of people doing BJJ all over, and even if you're the slowest learner at your gym, as long as you continue you will learn. And if you're having fun, improving your fitness, then, that's great. It might take person A ten years to learn what it takes person B to learn. Everyone is different, but if you're person A, and having fun, that's awesome. That's what it's about. It has to be, at it's core.
