How do you help kids traumatized by violence? with Bessel van der Kolk

Up next ►► 6 ways to heal trauma without medication, from the author of “The Body Keeps the Score” • 6 ways to heal trauma ...
People usually think about the military when they talk about trauma. But for every soldier who gets PTSD in a war zone, there's at least 30 children who get traumatized at home.
The big question continues to be how do you help kids who have been exposed to enormous amounts of violence? How do you help these kids get a sense of self, a sense of agency, so they can make a life for themselves where they can learn, acquire skills, acquire competencies, and become full-fledged human beings?
Bessel van der Kolk’s greatest dream is that in grades K through 12, kids get taught weekly about self-regulation - what kinds can do to calm themselves down and orient themselves. To aid in healing childhood trauma, every school in America would ideally be taught the following: reading, writing, arithmetic, and self-regulation.

A regular conversation about the way emotional regulation works, the way that your brain operates with "Us vs. Them" biases, and the way that healthy attachment and traumatic bonding are different are 3 skillsets that would be beyond helpful to have regularly during childhood development. One of the important things to remember is that how children experience things and how they are don't always align, but that doesn't change how your brain wires itself to respond to them. While a fear of spiders seems more rational than a fear of butterflies, they're all rooted in the same thing, and that's important to remember when it comes to never trying to compare your trauma against someone else's. There are endless simple ways to teach these things that will lead to a better and healthier generation that will be inconceivably better off for it.

Maybe this is why letting go is so popular. I let go completely, 5-6 years ago. Completely changed my life. Eventually I had to resume normal, and start forcing things to happen every now and then, and embrace discipline. Maybe I had to do it in order to deal with some kind of violence. School perhaps. Forcing things to happen is like using a hammer. It could do a lot of harm, especially if it is a sledge hammer, but is a tool you wouldn't wanna dismiss. If you're traumatized maybe it is better to just lay the hammer away for a while and just chill. I guess the opposite could be true too. Christians use to say that hatred stems from below. I guess they are referring to base desires. They also say that your fate after death is eternal. Maybe they are wrong. What if they are trying to hide something. Maybe that hatred stems from trauma induced by the christian philosophy? Sorry if my comments seem incoherent. I was force fed medication by some doctors that completely ruined my brain

First of all, the child has to be assured they did nothing wrong, but give them the personal skills to be autonomous with their space and the means to protect it through the child victim help available and adult supervision based on the child's immediate AND future needs. People will turn innocent kids into future abusers unless the system steps in. Only we can prevent tragedy by electing leadership that puts the needs of the needy on the front burner.

@@iforget6940 Not everyone who has experienced trauma will be diagnosed as having ptsd. Trauma itself works on a much deeper and sometimes unconscious level that can unknowingly impact all areas of your life. it can change the way you experience and understand the world. For some, that may mean that they perceive things that are not threats, as threats, and they become emotionally dysregulated and reactive. that's why he mentioned how great it would be to teach kids emotional dysregulation skills in school. For other people it may mean being very perfectionistic. For others it may mean living a life where they are very disconnected from their emotions (which tends to create issues in different relationships). There's also the concept of resilience. You see that in people who go through traumatic situations but somehow end up doing very well despite the trauma they went through. Resilience itself has many of its own factors, for instance having a supportive person that you can count on will increase your chances of being resilient. Keep doing some research on it and you'll see what I mean. Trauma looks different for everyone.
