Hey guys,
thanks for tuning in. I made this video because I myself was curious how a RWD handles in the snow without snow tires. I found lots of videos on how a RWD Tesla handles with snow tires but none without, so hopefully you find this helpful!

I have a 2018 RWD Model 3 and I drive in VT all the time for skiing. I use 4 season tires with a snow rating. No issues what so ever unless the snow is deep enough to build up underneath. The wieght of the car makes snow driving very easy. Of course switching to snow tires for the season if I live full time in VT would be the best choice.

As a europian watching, this is just 100% pure madness, who the heck drives in snow with all wheel tires :D

This is why everyone makes fun of Americans, because of dumbest decisions like these. Unless it doesn't hit freezing temperatures during winter or won't be driving during snowy/freezing times, get the dang winter tires.

yeap, basically all season tires are just summer tires with marketing. Then they think its the cars fault that there is no traction. :D Fouks, just get proper winter tires like nokia hakkapeliitta or similar. Absolutely no problems even much worse conditions.

Yeah, ppl get crazy on 4 wheel drive with all seasons forgetting they do brake same bad as RWD/FWD.

How is your supercharging access going? Anything change? I’m still super interested in a project car, but have not found any locals to lean on for unexpected issues yet... How is that salvaged markets pricing doing with all the tax credits and continuing discounted pricing on new cars? Is it driving the salvage market prices down considerably yet? Ballpark you have seen for a 2021 LR and P with mild front end damage if you have been continuing to watch those listings? Enjoy your videos, love all the details you are willing to explore and test!

I did icy/snowy driving in a 2003 Mustang RWD V6 (traction control OFF, because it was broken) w/ low profile tires and still got through the winter alright. I didn't do any hills but that's proof that on flat roads any car can make it with enough caution.

Appreciate the video on RWD W/All Seasons, was curious also, not many want to test/know the baseline before adding winter tires.

Because you shouldn't be even thinking of using all seasons when it's winter. It's like cutting your steak with a fork, you can do it, but is it dumb...

@@carssucksince1800s Said the person that doesn't spend very much time in the snow and ice? They work fine, they are all season, Not summer rubber, thats what chains are for, people that don't have winter specific tires carry chains when required. The underlying reason is to understand how well the traction control system operates under VERY Low grip conditions. Very few people are testing that and sharing that information. Im curious as a person that spends a Lot of time in the snow In mountain passes. Almost any AWD vehicle with winter tires is sufficient in the snow, limiting factor is usually ground clearance. Understanding how well the traction control works, like slipping backwards down a hill, was very interesting to see how it handled that. And especially stop starts on a slick hill.

@@101rotarypower What kind of self contradicting reply was that? First you say all season is fine, and then you finish with AWD with winter tires is sufficient. But yes, chains should be carried when it is winter. I do winter sports, so I have seen with my own eyes how dumb situations can turn out when vehicles have no winter tires. 10 to 15 car pile up was in front and behind me at a small crossing by the ski resort, multitude of people decided to attempt to get through just because they have an AWD vehicle only to end up smashing into multiple cars because they had hockey pucks for tires and all of that was at only up to 10 mph.

Great video, thinking of getting a rwd and reluctant to spend extra for the awd. I live in Canada. But I hope I can get away with just winter tires.

You're not kidding about momentum. I took mine over the pass here, and she did fine. Until I got stuck behind a line of stopped cars, and then the back end started to slide out from under me. 😬😬

Tires are way more important than AWD. Here in Europe it's actually illegal to drive on snow or ice without winter tires, which are marked as M+S (for mud and snow). All-season tires are NOT allowed when it's snowy or icy out.
@GRyder261

@@GRyder261if the police pull you over and you're not on winter tires it's actually a fine

All season tires ARE ALL SEASON Tires - of cource you could use these in winter (snowflke sign) . But M+S tires will be forbidden in 2024
@neaorin
@neaorin 6 месяцев назад
@jesajabook2177 the problem is most "all season tires" being sold are realistically 3-season.

I have a RWD MY in Canada works flawless in all conditions, the stability control compared to my Subaru outback is way way better. The toque control is so instant it puts traditional cars to shame.

Are you telling me you have to change the setting every time you're on a hill because that would be really insane and inconvenient. I test drove one yesterday now watching videos too sway my decision. I will ultimately get snow tires for winter driving as I do for all my cars.

Not too many hills where I live, except right at our house. Then the plows come through and make 2/3 feet tall piles of snow. No RWD for us.

Hey! Probably soon. I have some road trips planned this summer so I am not going to replace it until after the summer. No, these are basic all seasons. I plan to get some cross climate 2s on it soon though!

The answer is no, you are going to be doing 360s once you get a bit of any regen...
@WinstonsGarage
@WinstonsGarage 6 месяцев назад
Not sure if you have ever driven a Tesla in the snow, but the car is very good at detecting when the rear wheels are sliding due to max regen and immediately drops the regen to a very low threshold.

So I guess the big manly truck that was stuck on the same road at the beginning doesn't meet your standards? RWD pickup trucks get stuck everywhere during those conditions without decent tires/weight in the box. Most 4WD pickup trucks are especially useless in winter when in 2WD with shit tires and no added weight.
