I work for an airline catering company at LHR and have seen the de-icing process close up. It’s super sticky which is a real pain when opening aircraft doors, it gets everywhere. Love the channel, great content, keep it up guys.

Hi Neil this is why we carry out de-icing on remote positions after boarding and loading the aircraft at Hanover. In addition, the period between de-icing/anti-icing procedure and take-off is shortened. I am an De-Icing operator (doing the paperwork, calculate mixtures and communicate with both, the pilot and the de-icing crew on the apron. You won't get in contact with the glycol liquid over here. Those "rubber surfaces" you mentioned are not electrically heated. They are a true deicing system and they are inflated with air to break the ice so it will get blown off. The heated systems, whether electrical or hot air are "anti-icing" They keep the ice from forming in the first place.

There is some like prop deice boots that are rubber and heated but for leading edges, they are mostly pneumatic.

Couple years back, an Air Transat flight out of Montréal in the middle of winter; had to be deiced twice before taking off. I appreciated the diligence of the flight crew and ground crew in ensuring our safety. Very confidence-inspiring.

during spring, fall and winter months in Canada, ALL contamination (frost, ice and snow) need to be removed from critical surfaces. If there accumulation of any of them, type one must be applied. If there is active precipitation with the chance of freezing (rain or snow) type 4 must be applied

In the late naughties travelling back from Belgrade there was a sudden snow storm as we boarded (directly from the terminal fortunately - dry at least but still very cold!) They did what was necessary while we were still on the plane, brilliant to see them clearing the wings, but the noise when they cleared the fuselage!!!!

Those rubber boots are not heated, especially on smaller piston aircraft. They inflate slightly, breaking ice off of the leading edge of the wing and sometimes other control surfaces...

Flew from Chicago O'Hare to Phoenix Sky Harbor back in 2012 for Thanksgiving, first time ever seeing deicing. Didn't even know it was a thing, but since it was snowing that day, I figured out the reason real quick. =)

Type IV is applied at 100%. It is not diluted. Certainly not 50/50 with water!

I've been on several that were de-iced and one that had to go for a second round back in 2014 on a Detroit - Louisville flight. Can't remember what airplane ut was on,...may have been a CRJ900.

Yeah, recently I've been on a Ukraine International flight from Kiev KBP Airport and before taking off we had to be de-iced since the plane was almost covered in snow and ice!

The dyes are not for knowing what you covered.. is so the de-ice crew's quickly see if they are applied the correct fluid.. depend on conditions you cant de-ice with anti-ice fluid..

"Have you been on a flight recently"... Of course not. I work for a company that makes de-icing solutions, it's fun when I'm on a flight and I can tell if our fluid is being used based on the exact colour and the way it coats the wings.

Plowed to side areas where they just pile it up or further remove and cart off to other areas where it melts. Depending on where the airport is the snow melt (water) may be collected into large collection tanks and further processed to remove toxic chemicals from the water as to not pollute the local water table or ocean.

What part of the aircraft can't be de-iced?

Engines and some sensors. Other than that, everywhere. But mostly it is the wings and stabilizer that gets sprayed, and top of the fuselage in some conditions.
