Hmmm idk divorce isn't orthodox, here is a from quote St. Cyril of Alexandria (fifth century), "It is not a writ of divorce that dissolves marriage before God, but bad actions." If a 3rd marriage is allowed why not a 4th or 5th or more?

Thank you Sister Vassa. This is much needed. My husband decided to leave, after falling away from the church, and I was really lost in my faith at that time. The Greek church granted me an Ecclesiastical divorce, and I remarried 4 years later in the Orthodox church. Still at times having been divorced bothers me from time to time. Many people, as did I, have divorce thrust upon them, and they do suffer at deep levels.

Luke 16,18; Mattew 5,32. Catholic teaching is correct. Chapter division is in Catholic style. A person who marries a divorced man or woman commits adultery if he or she marries another person. You may reply that the declaration of null marriage in the Catholic Church is a sin; but it is not, it's only the declaration to express a non valid marriage, that means that a nulity of marriage is that marriage never existed, so by this, both, the man and woman are free to marry. The Bible si clear, it means that a person may separate the unfaithful one, but it does not mean to "remarry." Blessings.

Marriage is a gift, one’s spouse is a gift and should be treasured, they should be treated as such. However if the individuals are unhappy and mistreat and disrespect and neglect one another after actually trying to correct said behavior, they should not be obligated to remain in said situation.

The problem Im having with my marriage is that my husband has left our marriage. He goes to church, receives communion, and feels he's abosolved of his indiscretions. The very next day he goes to the bar, drinks for 3-4 hours comes home and tells me Im an awful wife because I don't have dinner on the table when he shows up at 9pm.

I haven't gone through quite the same; I'm not married and she wasn't a Christian (I've only recently became a Christian,I'm not even a cathecumen yet) but we weere together for almost 10 years and had a daughter together; after my third time catching her cheating on me I decided I couldn't do it anymore. I don't know what it is that makes people you're supposed to be the closest to want to hurt someone so badly. Perhaps they're hurting too. Idk but I'm sorry and oll pray for you.

I went to udemy, and there's a $79 price tag attached to that course. I live in Russia; paying in dollars elsewhere is problematic, though I'd like to contribute. I've recently finished a translation of GK Chesterton's "The Superstition of Divorce" into Russian, and see it as completely in line with the Church fathers on marriage and divorce, and have my own thoughts as well. I'm very concerned about the rate of divorce among Orthodox families even in my own parish, and have things I think ought to be said that aren't being said, for example, that most pastoral commentary treats divorce as a purely individual matter, apart from community. How can I contribute, seeing as the existing format of courses-for-cash is not a way that I can?

I’m catholic and my parents are divorced. and it’s affected my life. In the. sense that my. Faith in god has wavered. Because in the Catholic Church you can get wat is called annulment. wich makes the marriage illegitimate. and in my mind. if god can allow his followers to do this. And he’s a god of everlasting love. than y do this y make a marriage illegitimate. win that also makes the kids feel or are illegitimate. to me if Annie church allows divorce they are catering to the world not to god .they are allowing for more pain not less. More cracks for the devil to enter. in to the lives of the people Who are divorced and there kids. Don’t get me wrong sum is ok if there is abuse. But it’s not ok if there’s just constant arguing. If that’s the case try to figure it out talk to a Priest a counselor sum thing before you decide to throw that relationship away. including your kids and your mental health. sorry for the long text. god bless

An annulment is nothing more than an official recognition from the Church that there was NEVER a valid marriage in the first place. It’s not the Church MAKING a marriage illegitimate, it’s the Church RECOGNIZING that the marriage was NEVER legitimate in the first place.

divorce is not a dogma of the church. also in old Testament divorce was not allowed but it was still given as Christ said because of the hard heart of men. i think if a couple gave no hope of save a wedding the church should allow a divorce because if not can lead the couple to even greater sins.

A lot of interesting themes spring out in terms of the human condition and having God’s gift of free will. The sister brought an interesting point. Through the Church, union is established on behalf of God and the same could apply for the dismantling of the union between 2 people through the Church? As well, the Scripture quote concerning union amongst 2 people and no Man can break this bond conflicts with God’s gift of free will. If a marriage is not working what so ever and especially if young children are involved, is that not dangerous for the couple whose bond is broken anyways even though they are married and what about the perception of the young children witnessing this and the affects this will have as adults and future husbands and wives. For me, marriage predominantly should be for creating a family and though eternal love , without any doubt and through a good match in every sense of the word. However, if something goes utterly wrong, then I believe that it his “ bond “ is beyond repair and termination is the best solution if it’s the “will” of the couple. What surprises me is the lack of concrete clarity of divorce , better yet , the non participation of ones local priest in the prevention of divorce and the lack of the local priest participation in the life of the local church ‘s daily life of its flock. One upon a time , a priest did actively participate and was involved, for some reason, depending on where you live, today, a priest is less present- big shame. Thank you for listening.

Jesus said (Mt 19:6) "Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate." I know Orthodox Priests can marry and have children but can they get divorced also? If so how is this not a sinful thing to do? I think this is why the Roman Catholic priests are wise. They cannot fall into this sin. Aren't you making light of abortion too? Roman Catholics call abortion a sin that will send you to hell if you do not confess it to a priest, ask forgiveness and be sorry for your sin. Roman Catholics believe divorce and abortion are grave sins and it is a not just about healing etc. It is about losing your soul.
@VassaLarin
@VassaLarin 6 лет назад
MsJNix, Don't know why you're ramming through an open door here. Because there is not a single word here about abortion (or any "making light" of it, either on this RU-vid channel or in any of SV's work), nor is there anything here about Orthodox priests and divorce. And when you say, "I know Orthodox Priests can marry", you are wrong. A married Orthodox man can become a priest, but once a priest, he can never get married; nor can he get married a second time if he is widowed or divorced. If he does get married again, he must first be defrocked. So, just to be clear, Orthodox priests (and BTW the word "priest" is not capitalized in the middle of a sentence, in any church-tradition I know of) can NOT marry. If you want to inform yourself about the facts of divorce in the Orthodox Church, (rather than just comment on it, without knowing the facts), check out our video-course on "Divorce & Healing in the Orthodox Church," available on a USB-stick at our online- Gift Shop at our website, coffeewithsistervassa.com.

I was not meaning to be rude, I guess I should have said "I know they can be married and have children" instead of can marry and have children. I have been reading up on the Orthodox faith recently and found many interesting facts and some of it was regarding divorce and remarriage. The Orthodox appear to be more open to divorce and remarriage (in my opinion )than the Roman Catholic church. I apologize if I offended you. I was just asking questions. Also I know priest is not spelled with a capital, (just a typing mistake.) If you notice I spelled priest the second time without a capital.
@nikos39

Ranpreet Singh there are two things wrong with that. 1 you get Protestantism, enough said. 2 then there is no absolute truth. Christianity is built on the teachings of Jesus. How can his teaching be individually interpreted? They only have one meaning. Christianity and Sikhism are very different. Christianity needs there to be one truth for everyone to be united, interpretations make sure that the original teachings are thrown away and everyone can please theme selves by cherry picking what they want. It just doesn’t work.
