Well in this video I answer this very question. I also clear up a few misconceptions on how the trumpet changes notes using the same valve combinations.

Strings musician here. Always wondered about how trumpets work, so thanks for this. I imagine trumpet players are always doing a lot of “musical math” in their heads to know which note they’ll be hitting with any combination of valves, and that it becomes more intuitive over time. I played cello in high school and college (mainly play guitar these days, but have learned several other stringed instruments too) and find that on when I was playing, I was often thinking of the actual notes as I played them, whereas on something like guitar, I just go by positions more often (1, 3, 5, etc.) and only really think of the notes when I’m thinking about the theory side of things. Is trumpet an instrument where, like a piano, you are always thinking of the notes you’re playing (as I imagine you would need to do to know which note to “mouth” along with which valves to press in order to achieve any given note in a passage of notes), or do you just do it all intuitively at this point?

I started on violin and to this day I've never been able to quit thinking of music in terms of 0 1 2 3 4. I started playing ukulele this year and I'm still trying to break myself of the idea that a 4 in the tab means that I have to hit the note with my 4th finger 😂 Mind you I haven't picked up a violin in about 20 years so that habit must have really ingrained itself in a pretty short time!

Finally, a video that makes sense. Using a valve should increase the length of the pipe that the air travels through, and therefore lower the tone. But every other video seems to show learners that their first 5 notes will be ascending, and that pressing the buttons accomplishes this. I just don't get it! I'm planning to buy a trumpet and have a go at this!! I'm also confused as to why they call the first note low C, when it sounds like Bb?
@clearestapricotpencil4125
@clearestapricotpencil4125 3 года назад
The low C thing could be because of the fact that trumpets, like many other instruments, are transposing instruments. That means when a trumpet plays a C, it's actually a different note. "Real" C would be called "concert C," which is what would come out if you play C on a piano or something. I dunno if that's the reason though, I don't even play Trumpet
@PhillONeillTrumpet
@PhillONeillTrumpet 3 года назад
Yes the trumpet is transposing so a C on this trumpet is a concert Bb. However it has nothing to do with the concepts in this video.

@@PhillONeillTrumpet I'm guessing having never played trumpet, but because the valves default position is closed, therefore when "using" the valve, you're actually opening it up to let air flow through rather than closing it off. If you ever found your answer, let me know if I'm anywhere close lol.

@@PhillONeillTrumpet I did actually. I have progressed well in some areas, but the main problem is stamina. Despite playing daily, it only takes about 15-20min before my sound deteriorates, and I can no longer get a clear note. I need to go for some lessons, to find out the defect in my technique!

Hi Griffus Glad you enjoyed the video. How long have you been playing trumpet for? Where are you from?
@LliesMeridja
@LliesMeridja Год назад
Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong but I think that all notes can be played without the use of any valve, the valves come in handy when the player wants to quickly move through notes in a phrase, so for instance instead of paying C then D using the mouth/lips technique one would play C then press the corresponding valve to play the whole tone above.
@PhillONeillTrumpet
@PhillONeillTrumpet Год назад
While technically what youre saying is possible for very advanced players, its not accurate for most trumpet players. And for those players who its possible the tone quality makes it unusable.

@PhillONeillTrumpet

The open notes are the natural harmonics of the instrument. As you get higher the harmonics become closer.

Yes that is also my question. thanks. But this was what I thought the probable combination of the 3 keys is 9 (3x3) which makes up one octave+. And then with some hidden key, the octave will change. But I saw you playing one scale just by pressing 1 key (After the fourth minute). Didn't get how that is possible.

We change the speed of the air? How did you measure the speed? The speed where? The LIPS posture and firmness control the pitch played (which you didn't mention), not the air speed or mouth shape.
@PhillONeillTrumpet
@PhillONeillTrumpet 3 года назад
The air controls, lips react. This is the method I have been using that works extremely well for my teachers, myself and my students. If you play trumpet using tension of the lips then feel free to ignore my advice and good luck with the rest of your playing career. #HappyPractising
@darryljones9208
@darryljones9208 3 года назад
@@PhillONeillTrumpet the lips do react to air pressure but you aren't, in this video, telling the student what to do with the lips. If the lips don't change posture the pitch doesn't change. Perhaps you are referring to blowing effort or air pressure and not air speed specifically. So its metaphorical? You didn't actually measure the air speed? Can you answer that question? Can you refer us to the study where air "speed" was measured and 100 pecent correlated to pitch?
@KlausAnselmtrumpet
@KlausAnselmtrumpet 3 года назад
@@darryljones9208 how do you measure lip posture? Also, you used to have a couple of videos on Your Channel I believe, did you take them down?
@darryljones9208
@darryljones9208 3 года назад
@@KlausAnselmtrumpet The pitch doesn't change if the lips don't change. Likewise tongue position doesn't control pitch directly, the lips do. The frequency produced can easily be known and measured, and the clear mouthpiece videos shows how the lip aperture is "tensioned " or "firmed" as one ascends . This is due to direct muscular action of the lips muscles. This is not caused or controlled by air pressure. Air pressure is simply energy density and supplies the energy for the sound. Less for soft and more for louder. There is nothing about the air that determines or "controls" pitch. It controls dynamics once the embouchure is set for pitch.

So , can you answer this question? I will ask again. How did you measure the air speed? WHERE in the system did you measure rhe air speed? Or, can you show the study where air speed was measured accurately and shown to correlate 100 percent for all pieces played regardless of loudness of tone?
