Mike looks at Doja Cat's "Paint the Town Red" in an effort to try to make sense of why it chose to kill "Walk on By" by Dionne Warwick.

Hey, sorry to comment something unrelated to the video, but why did you stop making the TellMe videos? I really loved that chance to discover new music and share things I liked. I'd love it, if you brought that back. By the way, I really liked this video. It's great how you managed to do a neutral analysis despite not liking the song!

Hey there! Thanks so much for your comment. I remember doing one of your requests! I think it’d be a good idea to get back to them. Long story short: I think I had too many ideas on what I wanted to do with my channel and didn’t think it through time management wise. I’ll definitely consider bringing it back as it was great! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment :)

@@TheMuserResolute TellMe videos were some of my favourites too, so I second this suggestion! Then again I've learned something from all of your videos, so you getting back to doing any kind of content is already a win 😄

Interesting analysis! I'll admit I don't actually know either song, and the one I'd be more likely to listen now is the old original. But if your lyrics analysis is correct then I like the message in Doja Cat's rap more. I'd just need to have the lyrics at hand to make sense of it since I can't understand half the words she's rapping. Still not made up my mind about sampling in general. On one hand I see how it can be seen as lack of originality, especially when done in this scale. On the other hand it might be an intentional nod to the original song like in this case. As long as it's done openly and credits given where needed I'm fine with it. And then there's the likes of Thanks For Your Time by Gotye that use samples for sure, but in such a creative way that it definitely forms a new piece of art. (Or most of his songs really, but that's one of the best examples to me.)

Thanks so much for watching and your input as always! I can’t say for sure whether I’m correct with the meaning, but with a serious lack of musicality in the piece, there needs to be some redeeming qualities! But maybe it’s also just because I look into things too much 😆

Your extra piano sample DID improve the piece, but would have made me even more annoyed if it had been used in the original version - stealing ideas x2. I enjoyed your analysis of the meaning because I would not have stopped to think about that aspect - just dismissed the piece as unoriginal. The concept of contrasting the female role in society at two time points does give some validity to the use of the sample, I believe, so I am less negative than I was. Thought provoking - it’s why I watch your channel. Regarding male rap in the 21st century - have you listened to the works of REN yet? Not all strictly rap, but a lot of other reactors have found that the underlying meaning of his pieces makes them more than the sum of their parts. Try “Hi Ren” or “Money Game parts 1-3” as a start. Warning - they are not easy listening!

Hey there! Thanks so much for watching this and I’m so glad you enjoyed it :) I actually have listened to Hi Ren on request by lots of people! I’ve got the video queued up for release. Hopefully will do so in the coming weeks :)

Interesting. I hadn’t heard the new version (sample). I always loved Dione Warwick, but these sixties songs, all written by men, Bacharach in this case, were post war misogynistic. Telling the man, ‘you win’. Dojacat is abusing him back. Your extra sample addition, does improve the musical sound and texture IMO. I wonder if Dojacat actually didn’t want it to sound textured, but just a brutal take down of the toxic man…

Thanks for taking the time to watch this and comment on it! Yeh, it’s very hard to know what Doja Cat’s full intentions were here. Everything I posited in this video was just my own opinion, but it would make sense that taking only that sampled part (which was lyrical) was enough to convey the message. Thanks again for watching and I really appreciate it as these videos (which are not “reactions”) often don’t perform as well!

@@TheMuserResolute thank you for responding. Since discovering your channel due to Eurovision reactions, I really enjoy your analysis and obvious musical knowledge. I love music, but never learned an instrument, which I regret. So, I’ll keep tuning in, as your analyses make me feel better informed. So, Thank you.

I work at Walmart and nightly I hear the same song in at least 2 or more versions by absolutely garbage "artists". It's even worse during the Christmas season. I've heard at least 8 versions of Santa Claus is coming to town alone. . .

not fond of hip hop that use unmodified samples: where one can easily identify the samples winth in the beat.

How utterly cringeworthy. Can't modern artists manage originality any more? Do they have to take a classic, rip a tiny chunk out of it so that they don't have to pay huge amounts in copyright fees and claim it as original?
