You know what Bob... This is actually quite basic when it comes to editing. The genius work is from Paul Thomas Anderson's approach to conversation scene. Check out that analysis on the channel!

these are the small things which make a person feel good after watching a movie.. sometimes we dont engage with movies or cant relate with it, it happens when it lacks these techniques of editing/directing more.

3.20 Thank You. With the majority of people thinking this is some kind of groundbreaking movie, I absolutely like that you assure it's not. Ofc I find it bad for different reasons than you, knowing nothing about film making. But as a student of psychology, I can say this is not the accurate representation of healing or therapy. People need to know that.

Unrelated to Dear Zindagi, but I think another brilliant scene falling into the category of transformation is the last scene of Devil Wears Prada. When Andrea and Miranda interact for the first time during her interview, Miranda is sitting (left of the frame) and Andrea is standing on the right. This scene establishes the power dynamic. In the last scene, as you said the axis shifts. Miranda is sitting in her car (right of the frame) and watching Andrea who's on the other side of the street standing. They acknowledge each other as equals this time, another shift of power but the other way round almost mirroring the first scene. I always thought I was weird for noticing that, thank you for reassuring me that I'm not crazy!

Coming to think of it, this was nothing special. The scene could easily be reversed and wouldnt have changed much. Camera over Jahangir's shoulder facing Alia would have simply conveyed how she will be responding to him; while Jahangir with complete focus would have meant requiring complete attention from both audience and Alia. No matter what angle you choose the one sitting will always look passive. However the end result is still mediocre because of Shahrukh's over the top acting and both shouting with their expressions

Ots shots are overrated and a necessary hazard..it just a natural way of looking at someone bt doesnt convey that much[in my opinion] ms of the great filmmakers dispense with them as a necessary hazard as thanks of the golden era of Hollywood they haven bcome ensconced in our psyche..i think the introductory shot of godfather where the camera pans out from the father of the rape victim to making it a p.o.v shot to an o.t.s is a good refreshing example of o/t/s shots getting a fresh spin..i think once in a while everyone uses it much in the same way as we use an establishing shot..wd love people to point out some instances where it was used creatively

Following your channel from a long time, this is one of my favourite film (based on the story as it is way different from regular Bollywood drama but we still can't consider it as an art film) yes the direction and cinematography might not be that good and in this scene there are way many coincidences rather than the direction you explained. Yes and this kind of therapy seem kind of filmy, but I would rather watch this srk movie rather than K3G and KHNH. (PS. 3:00 I don't think it is completely unnecessary to show the close up of the glass. It might not carry a special meaning but sometimes a little change in the shots is needed. It breaks the monotony of the long conversation. I can give another example from the movie 'Twelve angry men' where suddenly rain starts coming down. It wasn't absolutely necessary. But it brought a change.
@CinemaBeyondEntertainment
@CinemaBeyondEntertainment 5 лет назад
True, you sometimes have to break the monotony. But 12 Angry Men is a 90 minute film in a single room. That scene from Dear Zindagi, is around 8 minutes long. Which one has more probability to be monotonous?

After establishing their position, they should have been shown more together in the frames. Or there could be some variations in shot reverse shot pattern, such as panning the camera. The first scene is good but it becomes poorer as the film goes. Good Will Hunting is perfect for this. The relationship, along with short reverse shot pattern, is very involved in Good Will Hunting, even after the first interactions.

Editing is done primarily for conveying an idea or when the director "FEELS" that a scene has successfully displayed all the emotions of actors and the message it wants to provide . Dialogues are primary tools for developing character arcs and to move the stories forward. Classics are necessary viewing to appreciate good cinema. If someone's serious about making it into films ,classics are absolutely must. As a matter of fact most of the current crop of directors like tarrantino , PTA, spike Lee ware all cinephile's ,and who has taken multiple scenes from classic Hollywood, old westerns, film-noir's.

To take one shot on a film set, you have to spend at least an hour in lighting, a few minutes in rehearsals, few minutes in blocking, then camera set up, etc etc. If this much time has to be spent to take one goddamn shot, wouldn't directors put thought before setting that shot? Think about it :)

Also in her intro scene she was the cinematographer who totally changed the blocking and the ending of the movie(?) what was that about, how is this wrong about filmmaking and depression at the same time.

I watched the movie specifically to see if they handle depression well so I'd have something to point towards like "this is what I'm going through" (spoilers it didn't) so I wasn't really looking for other mistakes. But as soon as the movie shoot thing happened I was wondering how this even happened. Like the real crew is all around them, this was a studio movie. If some kids shot a movie without knowing how real sets work I'd get it.

This isn't a bad film at all😶 it was refreshing to see the lead of a "hindi film" who is flawed and has difficulty in coping up with life just like anyone else idk about others but in my opinion this movie was a game changer in many ways

I don't know about you but I enjoyed the film. Its a feel-good film with many good things to say. However cool analysis.

This is my first time commenting here. Please don't disappear and stop doing this. If you have to disappear, then let it be for a higher, film-related cause. Many times I find myself too wary of analysing films because if I did, I might end up not liking many of favourite movies. Bizarre-out-of-the-blue question(kidding, it's not) : do you feel the dissecting of movie scenes into specific school-thought exercises in editing and videography won't rob you of the mysterious viewing experience of the film? How thrilled are you with magic once you know the exact technique of the magician?

The sheer brilliance of the magician to be able to trick me despite my knowledge of all of her moves. That's what excites me. Knowing these intricacies doesn't curb my enjoyment of any of the work. On the contrary, it elevates it to the point I can enjoy even the minute details. There is nothing more enjoyable now a days when I see a director in complete control of her craft. When the close up comes at exactly the right time. When the choice and placement of the music is exactly on point. When a subtle shift of an actor's gaze changes the entire mood of the scene. That's priceless!

Just watched Dear Zindagi...and boy was it good! I thought this would be one of those cheap Bollywood movies where an actress who is like 20years younger than the actor falls in love with him and all that crap,but i was wrong! This is an amazing movie. At first when i saw that it was around 2hrs and 30mins long i thought it would be boring. But i was so invested in the movie, I didn't even feel bored for a second. This movie is brutally underrated. And yeah,some people think its long and boring. I, personally loved it! Those who haven't watched it yet. Give it a go!

How about revealing your top 10-15 movies in every genera? I'd definitely love a video about that.

I started watching Dear Zindagi again today. Can't believe i'm saying this, but i agree. It isn't such a great film. It got harder to watch ahead & i eventually decided to stop.

These were nice to know, but some of the clips that are used in the last to say they never used these tactics in those scenes, these scenes are the deleted ones. However, dear zindagi may not have the perfect psychological insights but it was a good film, the chair scene, to convince any and everyone to see a therapist, because we all deserve to be heard and understood from time to time.

Calling Dear Zindagi a 'bad film'. Not an 'okay' or an 'average' film is pretentious to be honest.

You did a lot of observation in movies. You can include the conversation scene from the movie "ugly" when they in police station to report FIR

I think "Dear zindagi" is the vanilla version of "Goodwill Hunting". But to compare it with Goodwill Hunting will be a sin.

Hi! Love your work. I'd really like to see what you think of the table show pieces, other decorative props in Khosla is Ghosla. They always occupy this noticeable place in the framing, and I wonder what they mean. Keep up the great work!!
