Hi, I'm Elliott, the producer of this episode. I thought it would be cool on our macro series to take a deep look at a much larger creature than usual. We had a great time filming the refuge elephants in California -- watch it to the end to see them! And please comment and ask questions here. Thx!
seismic hearing - to me, an amazing new window into the possibilities of perception. wrapped in an easily accessible context/story. keep up the great work!
Humans can do this too but we’re really bad at it. In a museum in Alberta they play a low frequency elephant sound, too low for the human ear to pick up. They ask you to wear headphones and place your hand on a pad that vibrates the sound while it plays it. The combination allows you to hear a sound you previously could not.
Drustan if you ever visit there it’s called The Tyrrell Museum, located in Drumheller, Alberta. It’s known for its dinosaurs, but in the mammoths exhibit they explain elephant sounds.
Drustan also if you have a speaker or boombox you could probably simulate this yourself playing low frequency elephant sounds and feeling the vibration of the speakers. You’d just have to get the sound on your phone and hook the phone up to the device to play it.
*Elephants are nice.* They are very connected to earth. They can probably hear the earth frequencies too. Maybe they even hear the movements of the tectonic plates.
Phononymous OMG ...you're a TRUE ATLA FAN♥️ I was surprised to see such a comment for this video. It made me so happy 😁 Thank you! And kudos to the cute elephants, our world's badger moles.
Fun fact: despite the size and all that padding on their feet ,elephants actually walk on their tippy toes. The bones of their feet are at the front of the pad.
Always so awesome. I've always been interested & fascinated about perceptions and their modes, and this is simply eye-opening ! Blurring the lines between the senses! Deep look, i'm telling that every video but your content is off the charts !
I've heard about this before but I like how this channel present topics I know in a fresh manner and adds more information I haven't heard/read before.
I think the ground transmits sound so poorly compared to air that this is veeery improbable, both low and high sound are caught by their huge ears most probably!
Literally amazing. I'm also impressed at how ginger they were stepping over the thing hiding the camera. Also, I didn't expect elephant skin to be so bumpy. Probably better to grip with.
Hi there Gouki- thanks for all the kind words! We don't plan to stop. But if you'd like to make it possible for us to create even *more* videos, Deep Look now has a Patreon page! Come join us at www.patreon.com/deeplook.
Wow, I’d heard of this before, but never in such detail! Great stuff, Deep Look! Next time, could you teach us about how tree frogs can see colour in the dark? I want to know more about it :P
I was thinking how its silly how they got scared of a recording, but then i thought how scary it is to hear a recording of someone screami g out of nowhere.
ELEPHANTS HAVE THE CUTEST FEETS EVER!! Seriously nature ?ROUND FEET! Really? Round flat feet 😍😍 God was like " watch this I'm gonna give this biggest land animal the cutest feet"
I wonder if conservationists could use the low-frequency sounds to send out a warning to elephants to retreat if they know poachers are in the area? That way the poachers wouldn't be able to hear the warning.
Not a bad idea, but who would send the signal? How would they now there are pachers in the area? What if the elephants get scared and run right to the poachers? The idea is good and should be looked into.
