When he was blamed in Miami for not winning and folks kept asking for Riley I kept saying stick with Spo! Look at him now! He continues to find ways to win even with lesser talent! I’m so happy Riles stood his ground and kept faith in him!

@@Courtside-Stories thanks. Yeah when I knew he was Pat Riley’s film guy I was sold. People forget and just go by current legacy. Part of having a legacy is longevity so when people see Jerry Sloan , coach Pop, coach K, some forget how their organizations trusted their leadership win or lose. Live to fight another year and make adjustments and not based on emotions which coach Spo continues to do. Hopefully he gets the recognition he deserves and mentioned with the other greats. He’s out in the work! I’m glad too!

I think the points you make are great ones and overlooked. I like those other coach examples because it’s a culture and you need to develop everyone for long term success. I think Spo is getting the recognition now that he is doing it without the Super team. It’s impossible to ignore his resume at this point

I disagree in 2011 if they had a coach like Phil or POP they win that series, and many more. He is a good coach, but not all-time great IMO.

Let's also not forget that he's the only coach to lose LeBron and still make the playoffs the next year. Spo is brilliant and he keeps showing the power of elite coaching year after year

Really wished you mentioned his 2017 coaching year. As a heat fan, i believe its his best coaching job going 30-11 second half of the year and winning 13 straight at one point!

I know assistant coaches often move to other teams to get opportunities or learn from others. It’s cool to have that history and success in so many ways as you mentioned. Throughout his career, Bron had multiple opportunities to work with some of the greatest coaches of his time. Too bad he always used to put himself above the team and was (and still is) basically uncoachable.

I had read pretty early in my research that he doesn't like to do too many interviews because he is humble but many of the interviews were like his gratitude to people that had helped him along the way. In my opinion he is the most versatile coach as of today. He has always adjusted to the situation in Miami and with his development team, he has made would be scrubs into solid players. Miami’s development team is probably the best in the league

@@Courtside-Stories one underrated subject that I think could be interesting as of now after the embarrassment of team USA, is what lead for the Dream team of 92 to be born. The Pan American Games of 1987, in Indianapolis, Wich a team USA, lead by David Robinson and Steve Kerr, lost the finals to Brazil and the legendary Oscar Schmidt. US even had all the champagne lined up before the game to celebrate, it's believed that this embarrassment at home lead to the birth of the dream team.

Lol. Definitely no time to review the video. Super fair comment. I’ve been thinking about that during FIBA. I wonder how much Kerr and Erik share power in the decisions/style of play. He at least seems to make a strong impression on many players. I actually think he is probably why Dame is adamant about Miami because of his Olympic experience with the coaches.

I like to preface this that I played a lot of basketball in New York City division one high school The Cage and Rucker Park. However I’ve noticed a pattern with this coaches players he calls them that they play crafty. Well a lot of professional players include is Giannis always seem to get hurt when they play against his players. I guess that’s a coincidence.

@@Courtside-Stories I haven’t played there since the 80s. I’m sure it’s still good. However the cage that used to be two full courts with 2 feet after the backboard to a metal fence. Now it is just 1 quart with plenty a room to stop. Sad.

@@MineDesigned For sure. When I was younger I hated pretty hard on Jordan because he was the competition and I wanted my teams to take him down. I kind of felt the same about Lebron early on but I watched his documentary about him and his high school friends. It really humanized him and made me want to cheer for him as a human. I think it is easy to basketball hate someone without recognizing the human side to them.

That clip in the intro of Lebron bumping into him is deliberately misleading. I had to look at it a few times to see that is was just an accidental bump.

It is a great one to debate. The incident happened at the height of discord between Lebron and Spo. They were 9-7 but the pressure was on. Lebron had fans burning his jersey and they were getting beat pretty badly that game by that years eventual champion Dallas. Windhorst who was from Cleveland and had a lot of insight on Lebron said it was intentional. Years later Lebron and Spo laughed it off and said it wasn’t intentional but no one would gain anything from saying it was intentional. I don’t think it was premeditated but I’d still say I think 60% I believe Lebron was like screw this guy and didn’t make any attempt to avoid him.

Yeah he got a championship but has had a lot of teams fall short of expectations. We we’re guessing it could have to do with being in major markets as a coach so he has had tons of exposure. What coach or coaches would you roll with in that spot?

Yeah good call. I remember seeing that list and thinking yeah it helps to coach in three major markets of LA, Philly and Boston. I was a little surprised Adelman didn’t make it due to his longevity. He never won a championship though. Who would you put in instead?

@@Courtside-Stories Besides Adelman, I would choose Mike D'Antoni instead of Doc. He may not have a championship either but he showed a way how to win a lot of games in the NBA.

I love that so much. I was thinking about how to apply this to my own life while making. I do like the idea of making one centered just around heat culture. There are a lot of interviews I watched of players speaking to it and a lot of articles I read too. It feels like there is so much more there but I was trying to keep the video balanced. I'm working on one right now that I have a ways to go on but maybe after that one. Thanks again!

Nice documentation for Erik. You forgot to include that he was planning to play for the Philippine Basketball.Association before coaching in Germany. The loss to the Dallas series was more on Spo's inexperience + Lebron quitting on the team + sticking to small ball. The loss to Spurs was Wade + Lebron quitting/ demoralized and Spo not adjusting The loss to Lakers is Spo not adjusting again, not using big centers properly + utilizing Bam as 4 instead of 5 and only using 8 to 9 players. For the Denver series, same thing as the Lakers. Not developing and using Yurt & Jovic against Jokic & moving Bam at 4 could help out rebounds and defense/ offense for the exhausted/ injured Jimmy Butler & Bam as well. Being adamant in Small Ball would hinder his next championship

Yeah pretty fascinating to take talented young NBA team and get taken a part. I wonder how much the other team’s practice together versus US team. I think FIBA allows so much more physicality that our players aren’t use to. Probably tough to shake all that conditioning playing a certain way. Thanks for watching. Appreciate it. What's cringe about not wanting an inexperienced coach to ride your coattails? Lebron is blamed for losing in 2011, not the coach, even though Lebron was just following instructions. Coach Spoelstra will tell you that he was blessed to have coached Lebron because it accelerated his learning curve.

Hear that for sure. I kept going back and forth with titles. I’m still pretty new to this. For me personally it was his ability to take a 5 seed and then an 8 seed to the finals. Only one 5th seed has ever made finals, and only two 8th seeds have made it to finals. Zero 7th seeds have made it and two 6th seeds ever. So he has done two things pretty historically rare in a short period and with many undrafted players. I can see how you might disagree with the breaking basketball but I think it is definitely making people rethink team building and culture.

Appreciate the comment and watch. Contrary to popular belief I’m a Lebron fan. I think the shoulder check is highly intriguing because the pressure was so high on him because he had just left his hometown in such a stressful reaction to it. I personally do think the shoulder check was a passive aggressive thing that happened in the moment but not premeditated. Lebron has had an amazing career on and off the court. He has been a great human being and partner husband from what I can tell. It may be a little unfair of me to include but I also wanted to capture people’s attention with dramatic tension moments. Your opinion is fair though!

coaches dont win games players do. coaches dont make plays happen. drawing up a play and the players executing it doesnt make it the coaches doing. never has. bad coaches dont make all star or superstars any worse or any better

I feel you. It is such a good debate. I go back and forth between coaches are completely useless to talking myself into their value. I think his ability to take underrated talent to two finals in recent years shows his measure of value. It isn't clear what that value is but I do know that many other coaches may have lost in the first round. Thanks for commenting and watching. Appreciate it.

You make good points but your argument is too all or nothing. There is complexity and nuance. Coaches don’t make players better or worse, But they do help decide the defensive and offensive systems that contribute to winning. Their decisions impact how role players are used . They also contribute to management of egos and lineups which also impact winning. See bulls Phil Jackson as an example.
