I think sir pentious was very much a doofensmirtz but never got the chance to be redeemed

Put some respect on his name. He has survived many Exterminations from 1888 til now, he made a attempt to better himself, he committed some of the 7 virtues, he encountered Alastor 20+ times, kissed his crush & laid dow his life for his friends. He was the second client to the hotel & made it into Heaven in just 6 months.

My theory for sir pencious is that what caused his redemption was negating his "sin" so perhaps he was a military leader who fled leaving friends or family in danger. So riding into battle sacrificing himself for the good of others reverses his damnation.

My headcanon is that Sir Pentious was an actual British Lord who ended up in India. That's where I think he died, which has something to do with him looking like a cobra. Cobras are venomous, so he was either attacked by cobras or someone slipped cobra venom into his Gin and Tonic. The British aristocracy wasn't exactly beloved by those under their domination.

The funny thing is Sir P was only supposed to be a “villain of the week” for the pilot. No backstory required. But now that he’s redeemed and will return in season 2 everybody want to know about his past.

I think that his trust issues have played a part too in his death. It's been shown in Helluva Boss that a Sinner's look in Hell reflects how they met their demise. Lyle Lipton is an inventor who died from a falling piano, so he's a Bigweld like robot with piano keys as teeth. Sir Pentious is a snake, an animal that is commonly associated with distrust and betrayal. Notice how the only ones he could "trust", prior to joining the Hotel, were the dumb but loyal Egg Boiz. Considering his tendency to work on steampunk war machines, either he ended up in Hell because he betrayed someone in the middle of a war, or he built machines for a war. Or maybe he was a "snake oil salesman" driven by envy, selling weapons while competing with more skilled inventors hoping he'd reach their level of popularity. In any case, I think that war and distrust are two major elements that are most likely going to be considered.

When lute says "their love is vile and blasphemous " she cleary means demon, so many people say shes homophobic, but heaven have confirmed gays, plus when she says " their"shes not referring to vaggie at all, but Charlie because shes half demon. Vivziepop said you dont go to hell for being gay, and i doubt no one knew vaggie wasn't gay before she went to hell. So many people think Lute homophobic, she still horrible person but not homophobic.

In terms of what I think got Pentious into Hell in the first place might have been collateral damage. The accident that killed Pentious might've accidentally killed some innocent bystanders in the process. Perhaps an explosion or a collapse of sorts. In Helluva Boss, we see the CHERUBs get exiled from Heaven after their accidentally lead to Lyle Lipton's death. Even if it wasn't intended, doing something that leads to someone's death is counted as a sin in Heaven's eyes. If the accident that killed Pentious happened because of his actions, then the blood of those also killed in the accident would now be on his hands.

I believe that Sir Pentious ended up in hell because he helped engineer weapons that weren't good. I believe that he originally wanted to do good, but that his inventions were twisted to the absolute worse to the point he refuses to trust others out of fear of being taken advantage of again. He's a good boy, but because he was weaker than others he was punished. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he was killed by his own creations. It would be poetic if you ask me.

Not every person who’s in hell are truly awful people they made mistakes that would be considered sins. Considering Sir Pentious makes weapons already says a lot about him and could’ve used people for his testing trials by force of his superiors. I hope the show addresses the controversial idea of certain types of sinners going into heaven like imagine murder victims seeing their killer end up in heaven bc of Charlie that would cause some trouble in heaven. I feel like sinners that aren’t terrible people but fumbled in life that got them into hell deserve a 2nd chance.

I think he was a high ranked soldier in the British army who went on to abandon his post, and the act that got him into heaven was that his process of being brave and willing to sacrifice for his people.

I could see this explanation making sense too depending on how you choose you look at his appearance in Hell, too. We know from previous livestream lore that sinners take on an appearance related to their fears, regrets, or dislikes. Angel is a spider because in life, he hated his own feet, so now he's got 8 of them (well, maybe 6... but you get the point). Because of this, we also know that the appearance does not need to be LITERAL, as in it's not as simple as "I'm afraid of X, so in Hell I'll become X", meaning Pentious' form could be given some significance. What significance do snakes have in religion, namely Christianity? Well it was a snake that led Eve astray from the path of God, and so the symbolism COULD be that Pentious was misled and betrayed by a business partner or buyer of his inventions. And with The Good Place logic applied, he still receives the effects of his creations on his consciousness.

I think it's all very plausible. I think he actually had a role in the military on life, given how he was quick to want to help train the other sinners to fight. I think the reason why we'll get his backstory, though, is going to be because they want to understand not why he was in Hell but how he was redeemed. My theory is that, in order to be redeemed, you have to abstain yourself of the sin you partook in in life. Emily, in particular, might do research on this to help Charlie and the Hotel.

Ironically, I always imagined Sir Pentious human form looking similar to Snoop Dogg’s Jimmy Bones! 😂

Something that flies a bit under the radar about Pentious that I'd like to see explored in season 2 is how he managed to survive over 130 exterminations. How could someone that bumbling manage to survive that long when so many others perished?

Given Pentious's design of a snake with a bunch of eyes, he likely was a genius in his past life who was extremely cautious of others stealing his ideas and killing him for his inventions probably because he saw it happen before. Because of this, he resorted to trying to sneak fully kill everyone he knew or worked with but he was either bad at his job or he was bad at hiding what he has or would've done and when people told him they knew he ran away and likely died to something by accident while trying to run away. tldr: Sir Pentious was scared others would betray him(eyes and eggs) so he decided to betray them first(snake) but was bad at his job(the hat showing his true intentions/feelings)

I feel like it's gonna involve him being, in the metaphorical sense, a snake. We know your sinner, and angelic, forms are built around what person you were. So his serpent motif is undoubtedly going to be called into question. "And just HOW could a slippery serpent like you magically rise, not only to heaven, but directly to ME!?" Cue flashbacks, ALL the way back, explaining how Pentious got his snake design.

I think season 2 will explore his past as a means of explaining why he was redeemed when he tried to attack Adam.

I've actually made big ass theory ages ago during the pilot days. That being said, I feel like it doesn't really fit since seeing the full show. Sir Pentious was a actual snake in life. He screwed over somebody he was close too, a fellow inventor maybe? This would be his sin. As revenge, he would be murdered by this inventor, poisoned with snake venom, only adding more to whole snake thing. While I do still think he was murdered, most likely with by poising, this him being a snake, I don't think he would screw someone over??? From watching the show, he probably wasn't that bad of a guy and only got worse upon arriving in hell.

The thumbnail was pretty good, honestly he was a favourite character of mine. I can see him as some mad steampunk airship inventor in life, maybe part of a group of inventors who all found love. Him being the last of that group, became famous, lonely and cruel.

I like the "negation of his sin by charging into battle" theory, but my personal headcanon for the snake theme is he was a snake oil salesman, but actually believed in it and didn't know it was fake, resulting in the customers' harm/death. And when he became sick himself, put faith in his own product and it killed him too

My theory for why Sir Pentious ended up in hell is that his inventions unknowingly contained poisonous substances. The fact that he’s a cobra his top hat and his neon colours all seem like hints to this. The cobra part is obvious they’re venomous. Top hats in the Victorian era were usually made with mercury which is where the saying mad as a hatter comes from, because most of them suffered from mercury poisoning. The bright colours make me think of how at the time arsenic and lead were both used to make bright coloured paints and dyes. It’s possible he could have used some or all of those things in his inventions unknowingly killing a lot of people maybe even including himself as dying due to prolonged exposure to toxic substances wasn’t exactly an uncommon way to go in the Victorian era.

the thing is sera some of her argument still stand the judgement system works. there is no point casting Pen down, better to get to know his reason for getting into hell as the admited angels don't know how it works. Pen fully intened to die without being rewarded. lore wise the sinner's don't die unless killed by angelic steel so they are probably rejudged when "killed" through other means. you forget that if a sinner can be redeemed that means the opposite is true as well. cough adam

Sir Pentious's Pilot version is almost a completely different character compared to the final show version. I mean, makes sense- he was supposed to be a one-off villain, not intended to return when the show was still just a concept. Oh, and character development and all that jazz. To put it into perspective: Pilot Pentious is like cheap but delicious dark fudge you'd find at a small town market, while Show Pentious is local store-brand milk chocolate. Both different in all the best ways, yet also from similar ingredients. Does that make any sense? i don't know, but i love seeing how much a character can change (..and later, redeem themselves) over time. And he is the prime example for me.

"Wanted to be a hero, died a villain" Pentious was Alfred Nobel! Invented dynamite, which he intended to be used for mining. Quickly was co-opted into war and similar destructive and dangerous uses. When a newspaper mistakenly believed he'd died, they villainized him for inventing military explosives. (Also, was the reason he set up the Nobel Prize foundation, to leave a more positive legacy after his death). Sure, Nobel was Swedish, and his date of death was 1896 and not 1888... But, I think that could be a viable blueprint of Pentious' life.

So crazy theory but what if the layer of hell we see in Hazbin Hotel is actually purgatory; that could be why the hotel works. It's giving sinners a second opportunity to repent and "cleanse" their souls allowing them to go to heaven, but no one knows it purgatory

Tl;dw: Pentious was a 19th century engineer who either used his inventions for evil, or knowingly/consciously (or unconsciously) sold his inventions to other parties who intended to use them for evil. Either way, he only did whatever he did to be respected AND ACCEPTED BY his peers, but his inventions caused more harm than good on Earth (at least by Heaven's inconsistent standards). If he WAS evil on Earth, he would've truly earned his redemption. If he was mislead by other parties, it'd be difficult to justify him being sent to Hell in the first place.

Here is a question we know that the way to redemption or even the exact actions that get you into heaven are unknown even to the angels, But as shown in Helluva Boss certain actions can get you banned from heaven( specifically and angelic being causing a death of a living human regardless of how horrible they are directly because of their actions) What else could get someone the boot from heaven? Also when Sir Pentious Ascended for lack of a better term it seemed to be pretty instant and mystical but when the Cherubs got banned it was more like just their boss physically stood in the door and wouldn't let them in, and despite being banned from Heaven they still seemed to have all their holy powers, so is the damning of angels just a thing they are doing manually to anyone they deem unworthy?

Given that Sir Pentious was alive in Britain during the colonial Victorian Era, I'm guessing he was a weapons designer for the British Military. I'm guessing, given his aesthetics, he was designing Steampunk type weapons for his military patrons. I think he probably built a steampunk superweapon, but it blew up and he landed in Hell as a result. I'm guessing his trust issues stems from the treatment of British Officers towards him. He was probably looking for more peaceful uses for his steampunk inventions, but the British Military had conquest on their minds and coerced him into designing weapons.

My personal theory is that pentious used to work for a industry, But His main Passion was selling snake oil, Think about it, I think he was a snake oil seller, And one day when he was trying to extract snake oil he got bit by a poisonous snake and died, And the "Sin" which he committed was scamming, snake oil doesn't work obviously, so he was scamming people who were desperate enough to spend money on snake oil, Also the way he dresses also indicates that he was kind of a salesman, his polite nature, his outward personality.

i think the "build this or we will kill you and you family" is a better theory, and definitely could be canon. He would probably be like a hostage for a gang or like the mafia of the time, forced to make guns and weapons for them. However, i think that maybe he didn't have much family, like parents or siblings, my idea is that they were murdered. To cope, he pours his heart and soul into his gift, engineering, possibly because his parents had told him to follow his talent before they died. I think that some time well he is extremely focused on engineering, creating all sorts of useful things, he mostly keeps to himself but he makes two friends. The first friend is someone he trusts dearly, they remind him of a sibling that had been killed, and to Sir Pentious they were like that missing sibling. The second friend is a bit more mysterious and manipulating. He is also like family to him. He manipulating Sir. Pentious constantly, and eventually makes a deal with him. The deal is twisted and unfair, he manipulated Sir. Pentous to get drunk, and then forces him to sign it, saying if he doesn't then he will leave Sir Pentious. Sir. Pentious sign's it and then go's unconscious from something the friend had put in his drink. After waking up, he is not in his home, but something like a basement or a dark room. He then remembers what happened and feels extremely betrayed. The friend can then walk in and start talking to him. Sir. Pensous is arguing and well feeling overwhelmed but then the friend says something like, "if you talk back to anyone here or don't do as they say them i will kill you and your other friend. You will make weapons for us" and so one and so forth. Sir Pentious continuously dose as they say for years, not talking back and taking the gangs abuse for year's to save his friend. Eventually the bad friend come's back and tells Sir Pentious that the first friend is dead, and that they killed him. over the next bit he starts to talk back to the gang, saying he wont do work, etc. Then that eventually gets him killed. Sorry its long

i've also heard someone theorize that he was sent to hell because he used child labour (very popular and VERY unethical at the time he was alive) if he was a big inventor he could not have been aware of the conditions these children at the lowest grade of his factory's ladder were forced to work in but like you said, as the one at the top, was still responsible for them and that's what got him sent to hell that would explain his egg boy minions who are very childlike but seem to be working for despite not being paid anything (at least from what we've seen in the show) (i hope that makes sense, english's not my first language but i wanted to share this theory)

I like these theories. Though I absolutely believe that Heaven is basically (almost) impossible to get into and jaywalking could count as a disqualifying sin, I like the thought of something more complicated and...traumatic... to have happened.

I'm very curious about it too because we know that Angel Dust is there because he was in a gang and stuff. Would someone like Angel Dust, awesome as he is character-wise, get redeemed? Sir Pentious seems like a pretty cool guy, tho the turf war thing in the pilot and taking fights to his nemesis is some fun cartoony villainy stuff. Sir Pentious seems like he may have been an engineer and maybe he made dangerous weapons or tanks in a war. Maybe he made some kind of poison extracting from cobras. Whatever he did, it must've been not too huge of a sin if he was able to get redeemed in six months. Killing people from gang activities like Anthony may have been, obviously would take a lot of redeeming if its even possible to redeem from that...

Him wearing the General outfit in the last outfit, makes me think that he invented machines to help invade other countries. Since he was around the Victorian Era in England, it would make sense, however i think the royal court was using him. Saying that if you do this for us, you will be at our level. However he somehow died during one of these conquest and ended up in Hell.

I almost think maybe the reason he ended up in hell has to do with how he treats his egg boys, I think that maybe in life he was a "mad inventor" and he lost alot his henchmen in the process of "inventing" and just saw it as part of the process he does care but didn't see them as fellow equals so his lack of heart at the loss of those at his hand could be why, he wasn't trying to kill but didn't care about the "accidents" he caused

Actually i think he was a General in life. while he was an inventor too, the ease at which he fell into a commander role, and his legitimate actual competence in tactical thinking and keeping track of the chaos of the battllefield, definitely implies he did it before. could be he committed crimes against both his men and other people. and its possible that this lead to his death via some kinda treachery as revenge.
