How Exposure Compensation in Camera Really Works 

Took about 20 other videos to understand. Wish I’d seen this one first. This is THE best explanation.

Canon manual mode allows you to compensate if you set your iso to auto.

I have been shooting Nikon SLRs & DSLRs for over 50 years. While most of your videos are wonderful, this is the most overly complicated one I have seen from you. When the exposure compensation is set to “0” in Aperture or Shutter Priority, the camera’s exposure algorithm sets the corresponding shutter speed or aperture to what is calculated by the algorithm to be the "correct" exposure for most scenes. However, the algorithm doesn’t know if you are shooting white snow or a dark night scene. By introducing positive exposure compensation, you are telling the camera to add more exposure to very bright scenes (like snow). This will give snow a chance to look white rather than mid-gray. By introducing negative exposure compensation, you are telling the camera to reduce the exposure for very dark scenes like (night shots). This will give the night scene a chance to look darker than mid-gray. In “Manual Mode”, my Nikon D850, D810, and D800 all have their meter readings directly influenced by the setting of the exposure compensation. If the meter reads “0” and the exposure compensation is set to “0”, the camera’s algorithm believes the exposure is “correct” for most scenes. While changing nothing else, if I then increase my exposure compensation by “+1” stop, my meter’s reading immediately decreases to “-1” stop. The camera is then telling me with its meter, that if I want to expose "+1" stop, my current settings are exposing "-1" stop - and I have to increase my setting to give me one more stop of exposure. Therefore, the exposure compensation does directly influence my Nikon’s Manual Mode meter display.

There are so many tutorials on exposure compensation, but this was the only one that explains what shooting mode you should be in. Why? Thanks!

Hi Andrew and co. You guys did another excellent video touching on a subject that, I must confess, have been doing it all wrong until now. Question though, In what setting do you bracket when you have to bracket so that you can fully take advantage of this camera feature? In M, AP, SP? I shoot manual all the time and I shoot Canon, Nikon, Sony and my new camera the Fuji XT-2. Please don't ask me to watch the videos again; I'm going to be embarrassed. Thank guys.

Thanks for another great video! The ruler was a great analogy - another one I haven't heard before. If a beginner photographer would start with your courses, they would be well-prepared for whatever they come up against. If a pro photographer went through your courses, they would still learn new things in every one. I've never seen a photography program I would so highly recommend as I would yours. How much longer is that $25 cost going to last?

I have a Canon G3X I use to shoot at bodybuilding shows. I only shoot in Aperture Priority and the exposure compensation dial is used constantly for stage shots, especially if the background is black and the camera overexposes the image.

I shoot Canon and mostly in manual. But I also use exposure compensation and it works. Because whenever I need the camera's metering I use Auto-ISO. Aperture and shutter speed really define how you capture an image. ISO does not. So it's the only parameter I let the camera choose. Instead of using aperture or shutter priority where I set one important parameter and the ISO (that doesnt' change a thing about the photographic look of the image) and let the camera choose the third parameter, which actually changes not only the exposure but also the look of the image - I would suggest to everybody to use M mode instead of A or T - if the camera supports auto ISO. Some pros usually say: why not dialing the ISO directly in manual instead of exposure comp. Because then I would have to change it all the time. Moving from one room to another while shooting indoors? I changed the ISO on my older cameras that did not support exposure comp in manual. Now I need to adapt only when the camera's metering got it wrong - which happens not that often. Mostly it's one stop off at most and I don't care because you can fix it in post. To me manual mode with auto ISO is the biggest gain about the switch from film to digital.

Hello, (you forgot auto ISO) i shoot a lot in manual mode with auto ISO, and here it's also wery useful to use exposure compensation..

my canon 70d allows me to change the exposure compensation while in manual mode

Isn´t the same just to work on Manual and control yourself the Aperture or the Shutter speed? The exposure compensation is just "changing" one of those two things to capture more light. Why have exposure compensation when you can just shoot Manual and move one of those things yourself anyway? That´s what confuses me. Thank you Andrew.

This time I have to disagree with you. I have a Nikon D3400. I use the AF-P DX 70-300mm f:/4.5-6.3G ED VR lens to shoot minor hockey in community arenas. The lens is variable aperture. I shoot in manual all the time and use exposure values EV. My settings in our home arena are ISO 3200. Shutter speed 1/320 second, my exposure value is +1.7 and my aperture is f:/4.5 which changes as I zoom out. I use the EV because of the reflection coming back at me from the ice surface. If I leave the EV at “0”, everything on the ice goes darker. Dark colours blend in, I lose skin tones and miss facial expressions. I can’t use aperture priority. Variable. Can’t lower shutter speed to bring in more light. When I zoom out past 70mm I lose low light so I bump my iso to 6400 if it calls for it which makes the sensor more sensitive. So I drop the EV to +1.3 or change shutter speed to 1/400 second. I need the EV up to compensate for the bright ice surface Every arena is different. Sometimes I have to shoot through glass which I have to fix in editing programs. The glass can have a blue tint or pink tint to it. There is netting from the top of the glass to the ceiling in most places. So I can’t be in the spectator seating. I find small areas to place my camera behind the players benches where the netting doesn’t obstruct.
