Few people remember that when the Darkness landed, we were in the middle of a puke fest of nu metal and boy band cacophony. You guys were like a kick in the face from out of nowhere. I'll always remember that time and always support this band.

Exactly you get it. Rock N Roll has been in a sad state for many years and especially during the time period before the darkness came on the scene. I mean bands would be criticized for playing live upbeat rock n roll. Not metal enough or not grunge enough. It got to be to a point of stupidity. The Darkness was one of the few bands willing to embrace that big 80's duel guitar sound and actually have fun playing live rock n roll again. Heaven forbid they sounded like Queen and AC/DC put together they were great and unashamed as you put it a breath of fresh air from all the rap metal and scream metal where you couldn't understand a single damn lyric. The musicianship was there the singing and playing was great. People hated the bands 2nd album One Way Ticket and I loved it.

I love the musicality of Last of Our Kind! Emily was an ass kicking drummer, too. I just love how difficult it sounds in instrumentation, and you are correct, sir. All bangers. Yes, I was recording an album with Producer Steve Albini. We did one take of a song, and at the end it became a "train wreck". Then we did it again perfect. Steve kept the first take and it became our "wipe out song" particularly at the end. Ha ha ha.

I was a kind of guitar prodigy at around 12 or 13, and when that album came out it became cool again to hear guitar in modern music. Ive been listening to it again in the past few weeks, and each song is an absolute corker. And the way the album flows from song to song is unmatched. I think my favorites are Friday Night and Give it up (been clean from heroin for 11 years!) 😂

I first saw The Darkness supporting Ed Sheeran in Leeds in 2019, you appeared a bit disheartened with the audience at the time, they just didn't really seem to get it. I first heard the darkness coming out of a window from my neighbors house. The riff just stuck in my head for days. I had pretty much given up on new bands, but when I heard PTL it inspired me. I was soooo sick of everything being so damn depressing. That album from start to finish takes you on a ride. I'm still hoping to someday be a part of a band that can capture that energy. Have come close a few times, but usually my ex band mates wanted to fit in with "modern music" so I end up walking away. That album will always have a special place for me!

Great comment about forgetting your troubles when playing. I am of a certain vintage now (62. There, I said it) and have more scars, aches and pains and health issues than I care to think about. But the moment I strap on my bass, or guitar depending on the band I am with at the time, and it all goes out the window for a few hours. Money troubles, health, you name it, Gone!!! Love sitting here with your channel playing while I work (yep, day job as well as a part time muso) and I hurt all over after I spent all weekend gigging and now paying for it, but it was worth it for those few hours playing (2 gigs and an afternoon sesh in the studio) Thanks for the great channel and fab comments and insights. Been a Darkness fan since the start, even took my mom to see them. Even have a white Les Paul (sheer coincidence). I recognize the difference between 'best album,' as in most iconic or most recognizable vs. 'favorite,' and while Permission to Land will surely win out as the former, Hot Cakes is my latter. The delicious resurgence of that album infused my blood with a hair-blowing giddy that will likely never go away. When I behold the beautiful creation that saved me from an abusive relationship many years ago the song With A Woman often plays in my head.

The "mistakes" comment is interesting. I've invested a lot of time into writing music and honestly sometimes hitting the "wrong note" or different part of the fretboard has actually landed me in a better place for where I wanted the song to go. It'll be interesting to see how my songs change if I ever get the chance to play them on a stage! Lol.

Rob Trujillo (Metallica) has fantastic stage presence, it was a major selling point for him getting the gig, although he still would have got it on chops alone.

PTL is an all time classic. I’ll never forget putting the disc on for the first time and being met with the opening riff of Black Shuck. Having said that, I reckon everything released since Hot Cakes has been pure 🔥🔥🔥

Thanks Justin, I’m a bit of a latecomer to your channel, but I’ve become a bit hooked on it I must admit. I really enjoy your attitude and your approach. I was born and in-bred (!) in East Anglia too… so thanks for putting the area on the creative map. My quick question would be “do you think that in 2022 where you live is still a help or hindrance if you’re in the music business?”. Best wishes from France.

Surely Angus Young is the ultimate for performers who move a lot on stage, when I saw AC/DC he literally did not stop the whole time

@@216trixie why odd? Justin loves AC/DC and mentions Angus Young often. The Darkness have always acknowledged AC/DC being one of their influences.

Yep, im surprised he didn't think of Angus as a mover

@@lisamarie1560 because it's a low-key insult saying that someone is a better performer on stage than Justin.
@lisamarie1560
@lisamarie1560 2 года назад
@@216trixie I actually don’t think it was meant that way. Justin was asked a multipart question. The last part (part 4?) (about 13:53) asked Justin about his favorite performers who move around a lot on stage. He rapid fire listed off a few, then said those were who he could think of at the moment off the top of his head. This Angus Young comment was just pondering/adding to Justin’s list.

One Way Ticket is how I got into The Darkness. Heard it on K-Rock in NYC & a new favorite was born. When the station went talk radio, I was pissed. It was the only decent radio station in the NYC area, & the only that played The Darkness. Needless to say, I had to (& still do) purchase each and every CD. Yes, actual hardcopy. And Hot Leg? Omg, fantastic! Love Trojan Guitar! Is It Just Me? is definitely a close 2nd favorite Darkness song, probably because the video was fucking incredible.

Great channel Justin. Regarding stage presence & ownership, may I suggest you yourself are possibly influenced by & indebted to (consciously or not) late 70's early to late 80's Prince - who totally owned the stage, frequently shredding it & his guitar simultaneously. Both perfectly & singing flawlessly to boot!!! Rock on!!

I would say regarding this kiss comment: I do fully wish you would advertise your tours more (I had missed you this year, after absolutely LOVING Motorheart...) So,, I’d love it you took your own advice and promoted your own tours from this platform! I would’ve happily traveled the continent of the US to see you, if I had realized you were here… Dare I say, please don’t utilize false humility here, you know you’re awesome 😁 keep us abreast of your tour dates!

I’ll add, I love basically every album, start to finish, with last of our kind being the least listened to, in spite of being a collection of great songs… don’t know why yet, other than to say I simply haven’t given it as much h time as the others 🤷‍♂️. You basically write extremely excellent rock, consistently, and have a sense of humor I really enjoy… thanks for all of this 🙂

On the question of bass players who move about, it would be remiss not to note Steve Harris. Guy runs round the stage like a defensive midfielder in the middle of a cup final. There's a rumor that Bruce Dickinson got an extra-long microphone stand to fend him off from centre stage.
