@@chemdelic You can always go for regular powdered nickel instead of Raney nickel, it's slower but still works especially if you crank up the temperatures (and it doesn't catch on fire as often), and the mercury aluminum amalgam isn't that hard to make from readily-available mercury sources like dental amalgam (cheapest option by far, plus the byproduct is silver metal!) It's also not that hard to actually make Raney nickel, especially if you do it with a zinc-aluminum alloy instead of pure aluminum so you can melt it on the stove instead of needing a kiln. Buy a buncha solder tabs for Lithium-Ion battery packs, cheapest and fastest source of pure nickel, then toss some Al-Zn brazing rods and Zamak die-casting alloy in a cast iron skillet, melt er down, add nickel, cool, treat with drain cleaner, and you've got Raney nickel. Just make sure to keep it wet.

Shulgin actually had a DEA licensed lab that allowed him to synthesize basically whatever the hell he wanted to, even if it was Schedule I. It led to some amazing creations.

to make the ampule, you either need a bigger flame, or you must TURN THE GLASS, evenly head the glass all around the tube, if you just try melt one side the other side will still be cold.. i am a glassblower, i did almost unsubscribe

The crystalization looks like it could have gone through another round after that initial crystallization. Sometimes when they are that fluffy, the nucleation seems to stop until the crystals are removed.

Please don't use pliers when ampouling. The stress you add to the glass when squeezing will make it prone to explosion. You CAN use soft pliers to grip the end, and pull it away, which forms a constriction, but it's best to just continuously turn it until it's molten, and surface tension will slowly pull it together. You can gently press it against a hard, heat proof (graphite, ceramic) flat edged tool to encourage it, but do this in small steps, without rolling against the surface. Warm the surface a bit too - not too much so it sticks, but enough that it doesn't cool too much. A putty knife works fine.

Here is a suggestion for future videos that i think would be really interesting and exciting to see if you continue with concept "How far can i legally make a Scheduled (x) substance": 4-D (3,5-methoxy-4-trideuteromethoxyphenethylamine) and beta-D (3,4,5-trimethoxy-β-dideuterophenethylamine) which are quite unique in that they both are Deuterated phenethylamines (in my eyes this makes them pretty cool chemically speaking).

when using a torch to make the ampule thing, grip the tube with both hands fingertips and spin the thing so the flame gets distributed evenly and thus heats up evenly, if its on a slight angle or horizontal, it will start to droop down when its ready to be pulled off. then just use those huge ass pliars and itll pull off easier than you think it should.

Why is no base used? Is the nitroethane acidic enough to deprotonate sponaneously to the nucleophilic anion species in this case?

for the moonshiners in the audience you already know the dangers of mixing up your eths from your meths you can drink liters of ethanol; but even a drop of methanol in that will kill you that's why you don't confuse them. they're like Diesel and gasoline; whereas the -lyne versions are like kerosene.

4:47 Why didnt the crystals just crash out as soon as he poured in the solution in ice water ? Why did they wait a particular amount of time to crystalize out *slowly* ? I mean nothing has changed from when he added poured the solution and when crystals began forming ! What initiated crystal formation *then* ?

happened right after shaking, there probably where tiny miscroscopic crystals, shaking made them bump into each other to form bigger sarting sites maybe

Haha, yeah, usually you have to disturb it for the crystals to start forming. It's the same way with soda cans that get a bit below freezing, if you bump it into anything it'll all freeze in seconds.
