In this video we test various 12ga shotgun loads to determine their maximum range of effectiveness. We put birdshot, buckshot, slugs and Barry's old favorite Cutshells to the test from a Benelli m2 and had some very interesting results that you'll want to stick around for.

Going on 20 years ago while a small arms instructor in the Navy I walked in a volley of rifled slug on a 16x16 plate at 300yds from a standard issue Mossberg 500. The first two hit low but successively closer with the next three all hitting the plate. Me and my fellow instructors were all pretty impressed with the rounds accuracy.

Back in the late 80's, I was deer hunting with my father. We got to the property and agreed to meet back to the truck at 11:00. I was hunting about 1/4 mile away, at about 10:45 I started back towards the truck. I was maybe halfway there when I heard a shotgun being fired. A couple of seconds buckshot was raining all around me, some were hitting trees and bouncing back into the trail. When I got to the truck, I asked him why he shot buckshot in the air. He said that a turkey was flying over. I told him that he almost hit me with it. Needless to say, that was the last time I ever went hunting with him.

I think of the ballistics of 12-gauge shotgun slugs as being similar to that of Brown Bess and similar muskets. I appreciate that there is a big difference between a 12-gauge Foster rifled slug and an old heavy .75-calibre lead ball. And yet they shoot similarly, I read somewhere that soldiers could take aimed shots up to 70-100 yards with the old military muskets but massed volleys were effective up to 300 yards. Well, that's kind of the results in the video. That's interesting.
@Highjak86

Coming from a "no rifle" deer hunting state I really enjoyed this one. I follow the philosophy that if it can kill a deer it can kill a human target just as easy or easier. We've taken deer out to 210 yards with 20ga sabot loads. My personal record is 180 yards with a 12ga sabot. Shotgun lethality is no joke especially when you have the optics and DOPE to back up the shots.

When I started hunting here in upstate NY about 50 years ago a fellow I hunted with had a Remington 870 Wingmaster 16 ga with a Weaver K4 scope on it. As he walked out of an apple orchard he saw. Deer out on a knoll. He laid down in the snow and threw a slug at that deer. When the rest of us caught up with him several of us counted our steps out to where the deer laid. We averaged our counts and came up with 425 steps of a bit over two feet each so almost 300 yards. He held the crosshairs well above the deer. High enough so the deers back was barely in the scope. Drilled it right through the spine. Even he said it was pretty much a scratch shot and didn't really think he could hit the deer but thought he'd try any way. Made good camp meat.

My late grandfather protected his home with 2 double action .22 LR revolvers for all of my life and longer. His philosophy was..." A blind man has the rest of his life to rethink their life's choices a dead man don't. Depends on where they force you to aim with birdshot now BUCKSHOT is a whole other animal especially inside your home. Everyone knew not to FA&FO so he never had his home broken into. They knew what to expect. He's gone now but I get it. Sadly in this day and age you might get sued for that since if your on trial like Trump and you didn't do anything wrong you can still get sued or fined. What a messed up world we have come too.

How far??? Well, in '67 N. of Howell Mich, Dave Ott was hunting back of their farm, as I hunted back of Gramp's place, where farms abutted. It was shotgun only area, & both w/12 gauge, shootin' breeze. Buncha shots rang out from Gramp's place, w/huge 8 pt buck leavin' Dodge!! We had visibility, but field & a half away, it was obvious out-of-range, but being Mich Native, I said to Dave, "Watch this"!! My J.C. Higgins pump w/vent rib & comp wide open barked. Had led buck a shtload, aimed half shtload high, waited...& waited, buck launched in huge leap, pirouetted 2 revolutions, landing on rack w/front legs running until met Mr. Knife! There was just light skim of snow on, so Dave said, "Lookit' that!!" Breneke slug hit on back drew whole drop of blood, then tumbled about 20', so Dave, said "Want this?" Slug had tiny nick on edge where had slain buck, so luckier than hell, I loaded it back up,in same casing & next year got big 10 pt 1st day!! So anyways, that's the most I could get out of a Breneke slug, & effective range...I dunno...how far can such a slug travel??

@JohnSonnamaker-jg3st 5 месяцев назад
Once a 45-70 slug goes subsonic, the loss in velocity per 100 yards traveled, drops to maybe 50 ft per second. I've read that once upon a time, long range competitions were shot with them. The 12 gauge slug should do the same. A 525 grain sabot round that I have shot will shoot a rainbow trajectory but still have a good thump at distance.

A thing to add would be to go to a stationary store and but banner paper rolls and cover the board with it. Then you could keep the 4 x 8 and re-paper it so you could see the new holes in it.This would save you time marking holes and make it plain which were new holes as you moved the board out.

Interesting video. At 400 yds, it looks like it may have punched through. That said, beyond 200 yds, I don't think I'd call anything a "reliable kill" past that range. Having to hold 70 ft high and 30 ft wide is definitely getting into pull n pray territory.

What a great video! You should look at the Aguila Minishell Birdshot round. It uses a cup wad, 5/8 oz, 7.5 birdshot. Due to the cup, the birdshot hits like a slug round up to about 6 yards...and no recoil. A friend made some similar rounds with some larger shot ..T shot etc. The cup wad made all the difference within 10 yards. A fully choked barrel did not have anywhere near the affect on close grouping than the cup wad.

The longstanding US Army standard for determining if a projectile is deadly is if it will penetrate a 1/4th of an inch thick piece of clear pine. I have seen a demonstration where a .22 lr easily penetrated the board at 400 yards. If the sight was adjusted for the drop I am certain that it still would penetrate at 600 yards and probably 800 yards.

Surprising that a cut shell did so well at 100 yards, amazing really. Also amazing how relatively 'flat' a one once rifled slug shoots at 200 yards, saw this before on Hicock45 channel (in fact at 230 yards, he actually achieved a good group).As for buck shot at 100 and 200 yards well think of it this way, it would provide useful 'area fire' if you were attacked by pirates in the Gulf and had no other weapon. If you fired 8 shots at a skiff manned by 8 pirates I reckon at least one of them would be hit. When they get closer you could take them out one at a time with a cut shell.

Brother, I have taken a few things away from watching this video. (1) 00 Buck is effective from 50 yards max, around 30-35 yards optimal max. (2) You could REALISTICALLY ambush someone/something at 200 yards with those 1600FPS slugs. Your accuracy with iron sights was unquestionable. (3) To shoot slugs 400+ yards you require an artillery ballistics computer that takes into account the Coriolis Effect. LMAO. Excellent video, sir. I am duly impressed.

I have to thank Barry for that lost art of cut shell video because I don't generally shoot clay pigeons and when my Grandpa passed he left me many boxes of different 12 gauge and many were different numbered bird shot loads. I tested them at the range out of my 870 and I definitely got some nice results with some higher brass duck&pheasant loads, they turned right into slugs it was awesome! I have been watching you guys for a long time now and you all do great videos and provide very useful information but I just had to give an honorable mention to Barry, he just had that cool old school personality and had such a passion for firearms education and enthusiasm, the Ingram, Cobray poem for the Mac's just way too cool! I am really glad that you guys continue to put out the great gun videos that you do, hope to take a road trip down to Moss one day and meet you guys! Sincerely, your long time fan from the people's republic of New York😫
