In this video we show just how far a 45 ACP is capable of retaining enough energy to cause a possible fatal would. We were only able to connect at long range with the 230gr Federal American Eagle FMJ loads on the pine board. We did fire a very limited number of the 230gr Federal HST loading at our Clear Ballistics Torso with no success. We will revisit the subject of expansion and penetration at range in a future video. Stay tuned.

I'm a Nam Vet, 45acp is my all time fav and to see this video abolished the old school thought of 30ft max out the window..HOLY CRAP..440 yrds even with the carbine threw me back in my chair. 2oo yrds with the cz90, WOW. Now I would never throw lead at someone at more than 5 or 6 yrds let alone try at 100 yrds. I'm totally in awe of the duties that round showed. Thanks so much for giving this old Vet a new perspective of the value of the 45acp 230 gr ball..I love mine more now than ever. Now I start giving the range 50 to 100 yrds distance a workout.

Happy Veteran's Day. Thank you sir. My Father was also in 'Nam. He was a Bronze Star with 'V' Device recipient as a Green Beret. And I only recently found out why. My wife's father, coincidentally, was a aslo a Green Beret in the '80's and '90's. I'm still a young guy and I love the .45 acp 1911. Got a Ruger SR1911 for Christmas and it shoots flawlessly.

Barton Robinson I said the exact same thing the 45 ACP is more sufficient then most calipers at close range is it would do a lot of damage and at long distances it does even more damage you cannot disrespect the 45 ACP Brown absolutely agree with your comment

9mm must be deadly as the military just bought a fleet of 9mm sig p320. I own 9mm .40 .45 and 10mm , I shoot 9mm nato in mine and it dies the job for target. I shoot hornady critical duty for carry I would not want to be hit with that 9mm it will kill you dead no ? But my favorite round is 10mm that thing will literally knock you on your ass it's a real bear

Thanks for proving my faith in the old .45ACP! I too am a Vietnam Vet, and I carried a .45 for most of my Police Career, from the time I could afford to furnish my own weapon, giving up the Model 19 Smith in .357 Mag was a pleasure, and of course my scores at the range increased due to the decrease in recoil, the single action only smoooooth trigger on my M1911A1. Being a patrolman back in the early 70's and living on the $400.00 per month, I could not afford the top of the line firearm, so I purchased an Interarms Silver Cup, which was just surplus parts built up on a cheap frame by Interarms. She made a pretty good firearm out of the box, but I added a nice over-travel adjustable sculpted trigger and some very nice rubber wrap around grips because carrying a firearm in the frozen Dakota's winter can be a problem when the temps drop below zero. I sold the old warhorse to my brother-in-law about 30 years ago, he sold it about 5 years back for a thousand bucks, so I guess the old gun held her value. I had polished her up and re-blued her back when I was working with a gunsmith in the early 90's, so she looked great. Today I still carry a modified M1911A1, still the cheapscape, I opted for the Citadel General Officer model clone, she shoots pretty well but I am sure she looses some velocity with the shortened barrel. I have over the years carried off duty a Star PD, which I really liked, so when I saw the little Citadel on a table at a gun show I could not pass it up.

That was fascinating. I had never even attempted a 200 yard shot with a 1911-esque pistol. After watching this, I grabbed a completely unmodified colt WWII vintage 1911 from my gun room and went down to my rifle range. I set up at 200 yards and did what you did, put a steel silhouette behind the target for some audible feedback. I was very surprised at the outcome...after about 8 magazines, I finally got in the groove. I was able to hit center mass on a standard police target, 8 out of 8 times! My grouping was erratic, but just the fact that there WAS grouping was rather astonishing. I expected 45 ball to behave unpredictably at that distance, but it was actually very controllable. I think with practice a guy could get reasonably good at extreme distance pistol shooting. I had a great time playing with the idea, anyway! Thanks for the great video. Keep em coming!

@@l-makthedestroyer7142 I personally do the same, 9mm compacts are great for carry, capacity, and followup shots. but my steel framed baby eagle (Jerico 941) is comfortable enough to shoot and I don't have to carry that brick if its in the night stand. For my very first sidearm carry, I'm carrying a Sig Sauer C3 .45 ACP 1911. I know it's not a colt classic, but shooting it at the range was hella fun. And punched MASSIVE holes in my target at very short distance. I was using Winchester .45 ACP 230gr FMJ ammo for it. I especially love the safeties on it. Single-action, grip safety, and standard safety switch. And the reloading, it is so easy to load in the mags. Mags just pop right out. I also love these little stuff on this gun with green glow in the dark white dot sights, and it came with a crimson trace laser grip too. It was the only .45 1911 in stock at the store, but it blew my expectations out of the water. I'm now getting a holster and mag holders for conceal carry.

+mike parker I usually get a lot of flack for this, but my prep kit gun is a modified Rossi circuit judge. I carry a few boxes of 410 shot shells for small game, a few boxes of buffalo bore 45 LC for longer distances and big game (hot loaded 45 lc can be better at taking down predators than 44 mag) and the cylinder faceplate has had the raised surfaces milled so it will accept 45 ACP moon clips. The same gunsmith that milled it did a trigger job and turned it into one of the best double actions I have ever felt. Combine that with 45 ACP moon clips, and if worse came to worse I'd be able to put 5 rounds of 45 ACP on a threatening person just about as quickly as any semi auto.

If you're shooting extreme ranges with a pistol rather than cover the target with your 7 yard hold you need to touch the bottom of the black with your foresight and drop the rear of the pistol, adjusting the angle of the "ramp" till you're on. I've done a lot of long range pistol and open sights rifle shooting and this is a method which always worked for me. Nice ideas for testing power of various calibres, thank you!

The difference is NOT in power, as many/most 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP loads are quite comparable in ft-lbs. The biggest factor is in bullet profile. The 9mm is very sleek and pointed in shape, while the .45 ACP is blunt and rounded. If one were to compare the three, we might see the .40 S&W to be the superior " manstopper" of the three, as all FMJ ammo in that caliber has flat meplats without exception (more "smack" to the target). Why are they all flat-nosed? Because with SAAMI specs for AOL with the prescribed bullet weights they had to be shortened to fit the 9mm platform pistols, grip frames and magazines by, more or less, chopping the noses off of the bullets. Flat meplats make for very effective rounds for hunting dangerous game with non-expanding bullets. Now we know.

Pro tip: when shooting absurd distance with a handgun. As Eric mentioned the sight and slide block the target. However the way around that. Is to guess how much holdover you need and pick something that high above it and aim at it. Then correct from there. In Erica defence , in this scenario I don't think there were any objects above the target. But generally in real life scenario there will be. With a little planning , they could have nailed a 2+4 in the center of the plywood and allow it to stick up several feet. And at every foot color in that section. With paint or a sharpie.

@@kevinbendall9119 I don't know for sure, but years ago, when we still had the M1911A1 as standard army issue, there were plenty of support Soldiers who could not hit the broad side of a barn in broad daylight with the old gun. Now it was not the gun, but the lack of training and experience. I grew up on a farm with a father who loved guns, so I could shoot a .38 when I was ten, and regularly practiced with dad's old .303 British rifle when ever I could afford the reloads. So when I got in the Army firearms training was a joy for me, but many of my fellow trainees were scared to death of the "KICK" of an M-16 before our first range exercise. It was there that a DI took an M-16 with a full mag, on rock and roll, put it on his balls and pulled the trigger to make us believe that there was no kick. My brother-in-law talked me out of the first .45 I purchased. At his funeral I was talking to his son, who said they sold the old gun. Just as well, he said, you couldn't hit nothing with it! Well I told him I had regularly qualified with it for years on the police range. "Well," he said" you couldn't hip beer bottles with it for shit!" I had to explain there was a big difference between hitting beer bottles and men at 7 feet to 7 yards.

since .45 acp is subsonic it is probably better at range than a 9mm. The reason being when a bullet goes back below the sound barrier it destabilises and tumbles, but if it never went through the sound barrier, it should be more stable out to longer ranges, as well as this, a stable spinning bullet wont lose as much velocity to drag as a tumbling bullet and so should be able to conserve energy out to longer distances.
@danielbateman6518
@danielbateman6518 9 лет назад
That's true, I would like to see a test of that though
@MrSnakedHD
@MrSnakedHD 9 лет назад
HOD0R The tumble has not a lot of things to do with gyroscopic stability (in that case). Tumble is caused by the dynamic stability; if the bullet is dynamically stable when going transonic it will remain stable (just like the cheytac) because there's no yaw whatsoever.
@danielbateman6518
@danielbateman6518 9 лет назад
I think that under the circumstances of transonic bullets, like mrsnaked said, gyroscopic stability doesnt matter, which is why you can see that some bullets going transonic before hitting a 1000 yard target fail and have scattered key hole groups and some, whilst being the dame weight and velocity do just fine
@danielbateman6518
@danielbateman6518 9 лет назад
HOD0R that's true, of course I should have said something like "has less effect." Im just speculating though, I would be really interested to see this tested, but I imagine it would be hard to capture on camera
@MrSnakedHD
@MrSnakedHD 9 лет назад
It doesn't work that way, over stabilizing a handgun bullet is not such an issue because tractability is not a huge factor since they are not meant to be used at long ranges and follow a big curve. it is primarily why, when shooting at 200yds with a some 9mm's, the bullet expansion tends to not be perfect. Over stabilizing a bullet will make it unstable at long distance. But when it comes to the transonic flight, the biggest issues are the yaw and the change of the fluid dynamics. You should dig more deeply into it because it's way more complicated than those few concepts and you tend to not understand them very well.

I just bought a 45acp. Haven't shot it yet. Had one several years ago. I also have a Ruger Blackhawk 357 mag 4 ⅝ inch barrel that I have hit consistently every shot within the top of a 50 gallon drum at 500 yards, open sights.

Great pine board test! Around 1998/99 I bought a Marlin Ranch Carbine that chambered.45 acp. It was very accurate up to 200yards. I should have never traded that one. It was a real great shooter

Igor K American gun laws vary slightly by state, but owning basic firearms is a constitutional right. Some states and cities have tried to regulate firearms and ammunition heavily, but they can't take away guns from people who are not criminals.

Read up on Elmer Keith for long range hand gunning. Instead of holding over and not being able to see the target, adjust the sight picture so that a portion of the front sight is above the top of the rear sight. The target is still atop the front sight post completely visible. Keith used to inlay a gold bead across the ramp of the front sight for different yardages.

VERY impressive shooting to hit that thing that far away with the wind blowin'. Watch over his head and look at the trees dancin'. Wind is cookin out there

Here in the UK Southern Gun Company do a carbine similar to the JR Carbine. Due to the law it can't be semi auto BUT after each shot it holds the bolt back and you have a little lever by your thumb to chamber the next round so it's pretty cool and has a 12" barrel.

the trick in hitting long shots like that is slightly different. instead of raising the front sight you drop the rear sight!! Try it! This gives much more control and maintains eye on target the whole time. Think about it isn't that what the old rifles do as you moved the rear sight forward you were actually moving the rear of the gun downward
@rmc7434

Dropping the rear sight or raising the front would cause you to shoot low.
@MrTruckerf

You said it backwards. Raise the rear sight or lower the front sight to shoot higher.

He's not talking about adjusting the sights. He's talking about tilting the gun so the rear sight is below the front sight and sighting off the front sight. People sometimes aim a couple feet high and left/right for windage which takes your sights off target. Instead, keep your bead on the target and move your rear sight around until your hitting.

Place a white pole with black marks at 3 foot intervals behind the target to help maintain an aim reference at long distance.
