Every star, black hole, human being, smartphone and atom are all constantly pulling on each other due to one force: gravity. So why don’t we feel pulled in billions of different directions? And is there anywhere in the universe where we'd be free of its pull? Rene Laufer details the inescapability of gravity.

Hey hate to correct but mass doesn't change unless you of course add or subtract mass from the object. Weight on the other hand does change that's why when you move away from the center your weight changes.

Question: in regards to the statement you could never escape earths gravity completely.. since reality is quantized, with a plank length being the smallest movement possible, wouldn't you eventually get so far from earth the force is less than what would be needed to pull a neutral particle even a plank, effectively making the force of gravity at that distance 0? If your reading this and also want this question answered, please up-vote so ted-ed is more likely to see it!

If two objects are far away enough from each other that the expansion rate of the space time between them is more than what the gravitational force between them could , they won't feel each other gravitational force. Importantly, you wouldn't be torn apart when you're in the center of the earth. Because of the way gravity is not so much a force as it is a pseudoforce; it's in some sense the natural path that you will travel, due to the curvature of space. It sounds really weird and counterintuitive, but it's the reason you don't actually feel anything pulling on you: you only feel the ground resisting that pull.

Can you do a video explaining what is south of the earth? I’ve always thought of the solar system as balls on a flat blanket, but have wondered if that’s not the case, so where would one go if one travelled downward with the earth above you, is that even possible?!
@Logitekz
@Logitekz 5 лет назад
The relative flatness of our solar system is due to angular momentum as seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tmNXKqeUtJM.html . If you think of space as a giant ball bit where out solar system is 1 flat'ish layer, you'll understand 3-dimensional space better.
@Grim_Beard
@Grim_Beard 5 лет назад
"Downward" is always and only determined within a gravitational reference frame, in our case the Earth's gravity well. Moving away from the Earth in any direction is "upward", until you're close enough to another object of sufficient mass (e.g. the moon) for it to be your new "down". So no, it's not possible to move "downward" away from the Earth with it above you, but if you get to another massive object it is. Landing on the moon looking up at the Earth, for example.
@massimookissed1023
@massimookissed1023 5 лет назад
Our solar system is inclined at about 60° off the axis of the galaxy. Heading beyond south would take you mainly back through the galaxy where we were before, but also a bit through the galactic disc and eventually out into intergalactic space.
