How Fast can a Peapod Go?

A romp of a broad reach for miles and miles down Rosario Strait. The wind just kept building and building, getting better and better as the day went on. At the end of this clip you can see how simple and trouble-free it can be to heave-to in a lug yawl. The only thing I had to do was haul in the mizzen sheet, let fly the main, and drop the tiller. Done. The boat then looks after you.

I was reading Capt. Pete's "On Wooden Boats" when I caught this video. You said all that needs saying to my mind when you said, "The boat then looks after you." Succinct , Mr. McMullen. Thank you for touching up my my day. Pete Culler wrote what I consider my other bible, and I could hear Capt Pete saying those very same words. Best of health to you Mr. McMullen from the hills of Virginia. Cork Camden

I've sailed that stretch in a 16 foot flat bottom skiff with a fractional marconi rig with a little stem head jib .... Beautiful place

My fist time was in my Victory 17... can be a tricky place to sail at times. But I always enjoy the beauty of the San Juan Islands.

That's a Matinicus Peapod built from plans and offsets from one of John Gardner's books. It has a lug yawl rig adapted from Oughtred's Penny Fee plans.

Good sailing, in company. Nothing like a broad reach on such a day. Hope you didn't have to tack all the way back again against the tide with light fading. Perhaps you weren't planning on getting back too soon?

I, too, would love some more information about the peapods in this video.

Nice boats. What is the design? I am looking to build Arch Davis's 12' Maine Peapod that has been recently featured in WoodenBoat Magazine, and was lucky enough to find your video. I love that you have this set up as a yawl. I would like to do the same, which is not in the plans, but I am sure that I could modify them for this feature.

So sad that James McMullen left out the vitals stats on these Peapods. There is a wide range of Peapods, you would hope they would tell us some basic info about the boats. I see so many of these types of videos with nameless designers, length, beam, characteristics under sail, mods if any and why, best sailing conditions, etc, that I assume they're more interested in making the video than boats, please consider rest of us boat lovers we’d love to know.

I might be wrong Karl-and I certainly would not want to overstep my boundaries-but I believe the boat is the Matinicus peapod as designed by duck trap. A start for you anyway..

Looks like to me that these boats can easily capsize and are hard to righten up after a capsize. Am I wrong? I would prefer a small keelboat or an unsinkable dingy for safety reasons. These small wooden sailing vessels looks to be lively to handle.

Yep. These are not boats for lubbers. They reward excellent seamanship but they also absolutely require it. Choose a different sort of boating if you're not willing to invest in the time and practice required. Sail & oar cruising in the PNW is not a casual sport.

isn't this a ketch instead of a yawl ? as the aftmast is before the rudderpost, and not astern of it?
@markrutlidge5427
@markrutlidge5427 9 лет назад
what u thinking of is "yawl" as defined by the american off shore racibg acc. A yawl s aft sail area as aprox quarter of the main sail , this raito can vary a lot.
@jameswmcmullen
@jameswmcmullen 8 лет назад
These are Yawls, Splinter5570. You are using an oversimplified and faulty definition based on the distorted hull forms with enormous overhangs of the 20’s and 30’s. Unfortunately, that's when some of the earlier books on sport yachting were first popularized, and therefore that effete definition became enshrined into early modern custom, despite its lack of universal relevance.
@Jacob-W-5570
@Jacob-W-5570 8 лет назад
+James McMullen then what is the propper definition?
@jameswmcmullen
@jameswmcmullen 8 лет назад
+Splinter5570 , the Wikipedia article on the yawl offers a useful method of distinction that will serve you better across the board. (Full disclosure: I am one of the editors of this topic) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yawl

Sivagurunathan Paranitharan, I believe the question is still unanswered, perhaps unanswerable. It is a veritable zen koan of a question. The answer depends on who asks it.
