Secondary Stability - My Goat Island Skiff

Testing my Goat Island Skiff's Secondary Stability after building the new watertight seats. Sailing to see how far under I could sink the Gunwale before it was to late to prevent a capsize!
Trying to stay on the windward gunwale as long as possible before a capsize.
Tested different methods to get her the right way up again with as little water inside as possible.
Also sailed her fully swamped and was quite surprised with the results.

You are perhaps the best salesman for Storer and the Goat Island Skiff anywhere! You built a boat that the designer could only dream of, and then added very well thought out details such as the lazy jacks, outhaul, cam cleats for halyard and outhaul, hiking straps, water tight side benches….and you are having and sharing your passion and fun. If I travel again to Portugal, I hope I can visit you and go for a sail. I will bring pasteis Belem. If you are ever in Englewood, Florida, I would be happy to take you sailing on Lemon Bay on one of our lovely, but manufactured, boats.

What a brilliant boat this is. Such simplicity of hull and rig, and bloody fast too. Capsizing it again, to let the water out! Now you know how to do it. Not much left..not enough to matter much. But you could install a self-bailer. The side tanks and hollow mast make righting easy. I love the Goat, want to build one. Greetings from Netley, on Southampton water

One suggestion for righting the boat quickly - stand on the dagger board next to the hull, then use the main sheet so you can lean back - gives you more leverage to get it up.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Hi Paul! I found that bringing her up slowly leaves a LOT less water in the boat to bail out. Also when I tried holding the mainsheet like you said, the sail/boom wasn't allowed to swing and the weight of the water on top of the sail actually made it harder. 🤔

Great videos. Thanks for sharing. Have you thought about putting in a bailer? If that helps, would connecting the foot wells drain all the water through it? Thanks again
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler Год назад
Hi Pedro! Bailers have a tendency to not stay 100% watertight... most times the GIS is a very dry boat. With the side tanks/seats there's hardly any water on the aft foot well. The water on the forward foot well actually keeps the bow in the water preventing the skiff from slamming in the chop and I can actually sail it after a capsize without a problem like this.😉 And tbh I have never capsized my skiff unintentionally ....yet! 😁

Impressive. Clearly not easy to turtle it. I would be wanting to try it though because I have a feeling it will be very stable when inverted and you might not have enough weight to right it again on your own. I'm guessing each side seat probably displaces about your weight in water and you need to sink one of them to right it. That would probably be fine on its own and as soon as you get it a little off centre the mast will help, but all your other buoyancy is symmetrical about the centre line so you would have to sink half of it and lift the other half clear of the water at the same time. If you can get it across the wind and sink the downwind side even a little bit you will get help from the wind to finish the job...Still and all, a beer says you can't right it alone.

@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Hi Paul. It might but not that much. The extra weight added to a GIS for being made of birch, spread over the hole boat compared to the hundreds of liters in buoyancy might not be that significant. Ofc the extra weight of the birch ply + the extra amount of ply and wood for the mods could make a difference.

Hi Barry! I built my GIS during confinement, so the only plywood I could get was Birch plywood which is 30% heavier at least. I also added watertight mid and side seats as well as extra struts for the hatches which are also heavier than the same area of plywood. The lightness of the GIS was not an important factor as I don't really race her nor cartop her. 😉 As for performance I'm sure it won't accelerate or plane as readily, but to be honest...can't really notice it.

Despite what you say, the boat is filling with water in less than ten knots (no whitecaps). GIS are tender, it’s obvious by what you are demonstrating. And built stock without the massive amount of flotation you have added they are almost impossible to recover and re-board. Very fast, but flat bottom and narrow with hard chines means poor secondary stability. You can’t argue simple physics. Nevertheless, I LOVE your channel, and I think you are a fantastic sailor and videographer. I just question your choice of boat. 👎😜😃
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler Год назад
Hi buddy! Thanks for your input and support! let’s clarify a few points first. -I am oversheeting to “simulate more wind” to intentionally make it take in water. -White caps wouldn't form on the leeward side of the island so close to shore as there’s no chop/crests there. -most GIS don’t have extra floatation and ppl capsize them and recover from it all the time. (although I never capsized unintentionally) I do agree that the lack of built in floatation in the original design could be a problem if capsized in rough conditions as the boat would stay low in the water and higher chop/waves might make it very difficult to bail it out. But can you recover an Illur? Most cruising dinghies have poor or insufficient built in floatation. Now my take on this… My GIS isn’t as tender as a 420 or a Vaurien although it has as much sail area.(no spinnaker). It has a very high freeboard and when that hard chine goes well underwater it does give it a good secondary stability. The GIS has 10 sqm of sail and weighs less that 150lbs,(mine weighs 250lbs) that puts it in the racing/performance dinghy category. Reduce that sail, one reef for example, and it still sails faster than most dinghies I come across and it becomes a much easier boat to handle. It can also sail with 3 aboard and camping gear without any problem whatsoever, and if needed it can take four adults. Although not easy to sail with 4 aboard. I didn’t find any boat that light and that fast and so versatile in years of searching for “my perfect boat” I chose the GIS for all the reasons above plus the fact that the build method is so straight forward and minimalist that it’s almost a blank canvas for me to add mods! 😁 Making the side benches/tanks was the most important mod on my GIS. The mid seat is just as important but not for floatation, it is awesome to store all the gear I carry aboard. And I needed a fast boat since we have only 4 hours to sail each day around here due to the tides, if I had a slow boat I wouldn’t reach the places I do with the GIS. And the fun factor too..If you know of any cruising boat that can reach 16Kts with two reefs on let me know! I might be building another skiff next winter tho…. 😉 Cheers Teo

Just a novice here, but wouldn't about 200lbs on the end of your danger make it self righting????
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Hi Brett! It probably would but then I wouldn't be able to lift it while sailing and it would be almost impossible to wheel the skiff up the ramp when I get to the club. Small light boats don't usually have weighted dagger boards.

If you are trying to flip, why are you counter balancing the boat
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Hi Douglas, Because that's what I would do in in a real case scenario. I wanted it to flip due to the wind action, not by me forcing it.
