Even though it's technically VAR, he actually relies on the semi-automated offside technology, which the referee has no authority over, unlike penalty checks that a referee can choose to ignore. Anytime a player receives the ball on the opposite side of the field, the system checks whether that player is onside or offside, and an offside is called when it occurs, which makes it a reliable tool for Flick, as no human bias can affect it
What I observed during Real Madrid and Barcelona game is that Hansi strategy was to play intensity fast ball with the intention to drain energy of Madrid players and it worked because ten minutes after second half, you could see that they were already tired and Hansi started substituting his midfielders by two attacking minded players who can dictate the tempo of the game( Frenkie and Olmo) and Gavi. Both Olmo and Frenkie brought mess to Madrid team and started making mistakes which affected the supply to Vinicius and Mbappe.
