How Ferrari Psychologically Affected Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel has endured probably the hardest season of his career in 2020. The German struggled all year with an SF1000 that did not suit his preferences as Ferrari hung him out to dry. It was a long, slow and painful breakup between the two mainly because of Mattia Binotto's decision to turn his back on the four time World Champion and deny him a contract extension. With Seb moving to Aston Martin next year, however, I have high hopes for success in a new environment where he can thrive. Most importantly, he will be able to reset his mind and rebuild his confidence.

1:04 “That car has developed over the years and it has nothing to do with Charles, it’s been all Sebs work” I think people really need to understand what Lewis Hamilton is saying here. It’s the reason why not anyone can just walk into Mercedes and turn it into a championship winning team, it’s the reason why other drivers struggle to join Redbull and compete with Max. It’s not just about the car it’s about the impact the driver makes on it’s development so people should not just assume someone like George Russell can join Mercedes and keep it a championship winning team. Yes the team and budget play a massive role but drivers like Lewis, Max and Seb have the ability to fine tune a Formula One race car and keep improving it while pushing it to its very limit
@JamesFlemingIreland
@JamesFlemingIreland 2 года назад
This is absolutely true, and Mercedes really understood this when Ross Brawn asked Michael to come back out of retirement to help the team. In turn, Nico learned a lot from Michael, and Hamilton came into the team with his experience and talent, when Mercedes already had a very strong foundation. I think this was the weakness of Bottas.

I share your opinion. As an Italian I’ve been a Ferrari fan since the day I was born, but as an athlete I can’t stand how the scuderia is behaving with everyone in the team. This year I couldn’t cheer for them, I was cheering for the drivers, not for the scuderia. Take Williams for example: they had their worst years ever but the team is motivated, the pit stop crew is strong and they want to do better. Ferrari is falling apart, but FIAT never treated well their employees so it isn’t that strange. I hope to see the man back on top where he belongs. Grazie SEB 🙏🏼

Agreed, Im a german but I've always been a Ferrari fan....mostly because I hated Mercedes originally, but then I was a Schumi fan and I liked their later GT3 and GTE cars.....but the F1 team is a dumpster fire. They burned or as we say "verheizten"* both Seb and before him Fernando Alonso, two of the all time greats and before that used up some good drivers like Massa. This team can't be good, because the Leadership lacks in Menschenführung or the Art of leading humans, they don't respect their subordinates and employees, but treat them as throw-away chess pieces. A team like that cannot be successful, because in the end who will truly go above and beyond for the team after they see how people, even famous ones like Fernando or Seb have been treated? *past form of verheizen, means to needlessly throw away good men it's a term from WW2 that stuck around.

@@GowthamV07 "Ferrari is lazy to optimize both the cars for their drivers." Ferrari is a one-driver team. Always has been since the days of Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi permanently ended Enzo's old rule "let the drivers races each other to establish who the best one is". We saw Senna race Prost for the titles at McLaren. We saw Mansell race Piquet for the titles at Williams. We saw Nico Rosberg race for the titles at Mercedes. We saw Hamilton race Alonso for the titles at McLaren (hence why Alonso left since he wasn't guaranteed "number 1 driver status"). But when did we ever see two Ferrari drivers race for the title when they had the best car?? In fact Ferrari made it painfully obvious they were 100% behind Schumacher - even when he had a huge points lead - in the 2002 Austrian GP. They spat both Barrichello and all F1 fans in the face with that travesty. Jody Scheckter vs Gilles Villeneuve. 1979. Last time two Ferrari drivers raced each other for the title. And I hate to say this, but Carlos Sainz will soon realize that unless he pulls off something incredible he will become the "Ferrari number two" like Barrichello was to Schumacher, Massa was to Alonso and Raikkonen was to Vettel. Charles Leclerc is Ferrari's golden boy now.

Success in formula one is down to many things. One of the crucial elements is timing. The team vettel signed for wasn't the one that welcomed him in maranello. Luca was ousted by the taskmaster Marchionne and his number 1 lieutenant Arrivabene replaced Mattiacci. Vettel is a hard worker, in the same vein as his hero Micheal. But unlike Michael, there was no Jean Todt protecting the team from upper management. There was no Brawn leading the technical side. Well that's not entirely true. They did have James Allison, but unfortunately Marchionne's brutal managerial style sent him to their nearest rivals Mercedes. James was quite fond of Sebastian and together they created ferrari's most ambitious car to date, the sf70H. While it lacked mercedes OP quali modes, it's chassis was easily the best on the grid. Showcasing impressive tire wear characteristics and most importantly a strong rear end. Vettel was magic in that car, leading most of the season until unreliability and Singapore put end to their championship challenge. Knowing their only real weakness to Mercedes was qualifying, Binotto was tasked with "exploiting" the grey areas of the PU regulation. With Marchionne's sudden death in 2018 a power struggle began between Binotto and Arrivabene. All while ferrari lost faith in Sebastian and he in them. The pressure both on track and off, did him in. To win, a driver and team must become one. There can't be any uncertainties. The releasing of Kimi and promotion of Charles was a clear sign, vettel was no longer top dog. 2019 pretty much confirmed Marchionne's suspicion that Seb wasn't worth the $50m he was being paid. 2021 will be an interesting year for Seb. Can hardly wait...
@BMPHF1
@BMPHF1 3 года назад
Perfectly said as always man. Marchionne’s death really destabilised Ferrari during 2018. That power struggle between Binotto and Arrivabene must have been on Seb’s mind during 2018 as the environment was so damn toxic. Michael, Todt and Brawn formed an unbreakable bond between themselves to protect them from all the politics. Meanwhile, Mercedes where harmoniously working together, Ferrari were self-destructing. The death of Allison’s wife also played a big part in his departure as Mercedes (namely Toto) were able to help him get through it. I pray the same doesn’t happen to Charles because he is such a talent. And I’m also pumped to see Seb rejuvenated in green next year.

@@BMPHF1 In mattia's Beyond the grid podcast, he pretty much confirms they were forced to cheat (PU) due to the pressure marchionne placed on them. Binotto was expected to answer the phone within minutes of it ringing. Regardless of time, day or night, race weekend or not. Crazy!! Just highlights how amazing a TP/CEO Wolff is. In another environment vettel would've prospered. He doesn't quite have the raw talent of Lewis but he isn't too far off and is a work horse. Astonishingly similar to Schumacher. One of Michael's greatest strengths was his love of testing. Once that was removed in the 2010's he looked rather ordinary. Not to mention every generation is slightly better than the last. A fact many ignore when comparing era's. Currently, Lewis' consistency automatically raises the consistency of the next generation of hot shoes. In order to compete, they have to be perfect. He sets the bar they all chase. Just like Senna with his fitness, which michael took up another level. The Greats truly revolutionise the sport. Ps. While not to one to suggest things. I think the fanbase would appreciate the nuances of driver/car development. It's no coincidence the w11 drives the way it does. Or the rb16 being skittish but quick. The ferrari being developed more to charles driving style than vettels. Fans seem to think engineers just build cars in a void. Driver feedback in crucial to the performance of a racecar. The mercedes rear suspension and DAS was specifically developed for Lewis Hamilton. In a way, the cars fit the personalities of it's lead driver. The w11 is fast in all conditions, stable and reliable. The RB16 is agile, skittish with impressive breaks.

@@Bahamuttiamat I think people also forget that, notwithstanding Redbull's dominance, Vettel also had some stellar performances and consistency that pulled him through some crucial races. He was amazing to watch. Kind of how Lewis is now, he just utterly dominates Bottas. The only difference that stands out to me between Lewis and Seb is the ability to learn and scrape off mistakes. Lewis would rather slow down and keep the car in control when it's a bit skittish. While Seb will most likely get caught out by it and spin. So people end up blaming the car more in Seb's case. Like, Lewis really struggled with his starts in 2016 but, he completely scraped it off his game. Now it's most likely Bottas who ends up messing up his starts. Vettel though, we're compelled to feel sorry for him, because once he starts struggling with something it's like he can't get it out of his system. It becomes his new natural. I think that was a contributing factor to him leaving Redbull, he needed a fresh start. A place where he's the alpha.

Previously, his highs were very high but so were his lows. Today Hamilton remains peerlessly consistent and continues to perform at a high level regardless of circumstances. The Italians are very similar to the Chinese, they hate to lose face or be embarrassed and things are never their fault. They are always YOUR FAULT. They will never admit they are wrong or need to change. Having worked with and for Italians, I am speaking from experience. Attending meetings where years old and even decades old feuds are brought up and end with people yelling and screaming. Or people refusing to do business because ‘F- that guy’ is stated as a reason. Or where secret friendships are formed with the express purpose of stabbing someone in the back when it will hurt them the most. Was Seb being undermined at the team, 100%. Did they do it to make them look good and him look bad 100%. Was Charles car better and faster, absolutely. The problem here is Ferrari, and its a problem that will never be solved. From Enzo Ferrari calling other drivers while Nikki Lauder was literally on fire in the TV in front of him, to sacking their last wdc Kimi...twice, to hiring and sacking of Alonso, and now Seb. In the years to come, Ferrari deserve every peace of misfortune that comes their way. I agree with everything that was said in this video except the part about him not being sabotaged by Ferrari. First off, Ferrari wrote off the season after their controversial decision with the FIA on the engine fuel flow issues. Second, Ferrari does not need the money that they would get from finishing in third place vs any other place. They get a substantial amount for being the oldest f1 team. Third, with the new regulations, certain teams that finish lower have more time in the wind tunnel for testing their 2021/2022 cars. What’s ten million to Ferrari? Just a drop in the bucket for a $600 million budget. Fourth, they have displayed that they are toxic, in the past with drivers like Prost and now its evident. They lied to him and chose Sainz before the season even started and made up bullshit excuses like corona. Fifth, the deficit the two cars have is insurmountable, over a second difference in qualifying, you think Seb forgot how to drive? Nope. They just didn’t give a shit as long as Leclerc finished before him. Its clear all season, just look at last week in qualifying how Leclerc stormed through q3 and seb barely made it into q2. Cmon, if you think the cars are equal you are an idiot. Plain and simple.

Italians need to change their obsolete approach about stuff and have more respect to the people that trying to develop things, reworking, upgrade and so on, specially if have someone that's not native italian in a native italians enviroment. They're too imeadist in my experience, if works you're the best but if something isn't working and "we" need to work together to put the goods on the table, so ... Ferrari is a very powerful company so it's difficult to break even if they wanted to bankrupt on pouspose like Italy itself, but they playing too much with their 70s - 80s mentallity. Ferrari was good when they had a French manager with a english enginner helped by a German that really manage to take the Ferrari for his own; after that when Ferrari returned to the "italian way" returned also the failures and I can't see someone like Schumacher with a favour enviroment to take the Ferrari for his own and change the vision and the work ethic of the place, but let's hope I'm wrong. He may not be the most adaptive driver but adaptiveness is for sure not a weakness of him. When you look back at the 2019 season you don't see a big gap between him and Leclerc what brings me to the conclusion that the 2020 Ferrari was solely tailored to the needs of the Frenchman - at least aerodynamic and balance wise.

I stand corrected. Just re-read an article to refresh my memory and indeed you are right. The power advantage Ferrari had in Spa was labelled as ‘ridiculous’ by Mercedes who were around 30bhp down. Ferrari always had a power advantage, it’s just that for that weekend especially in Spa, Mercedes brought their spec 3 engine which showed signs of unreliability with Perez and Kubica. As a result, they turned the engines down, which made it seem like Ferrari had gained another level of speed through their power output. But in Monza when they actually brought their engine upgrade, the gap in horsepower remained the same because Mercedes turned up their engines again.

To add a slightly different perspective on one of your points regarding whether or not they intentionally sabotaged Seb's season: You mentioned that this didn't make sense considering how Ferrari were fighting for third place in the constructors, however they were never fighting for third but rather trying to keep 6th place, ahead of the Alpha Tauri's. Would this have changed Ferrari's willingness to focus more on their future star whilst forgetting Vettel entirely, which would have ultimately led to what could be construed as sabotage? Did Ferrari sabotage Sebastian's season? Intentionally, probably not, however their consistently poor reliability, strategy calls and difficult car gave him almost no chance to perform or to get any momentum. A prime example of this was the Silverstone double-header where Vettel suffered mechanical issues in five of the six practice sessions over the two weekends, whilst his teammate suffered no issues whatsoever. Before this point Seb had been the quicker of the two drivers in the first three races of the season. It's no secret that Ferrari were keeping information from Sebastian due to the fact he was leaving at the end of the year, and it's also clear that Ferrari will have obviously put all of their effort into developing a car for their future star, rather than a driver who they had already cut ties with. If you look at the qualifying performance at the 2019 Spanish GP then you'll see that Vettel outqualified Leclerc by 0.4 of a second, but then in 2020 Leclerc outqualified Vettel by 0.3 of a second meaning that over the course of 12 months one driver had gained 0.7s on the other over what is a short track, and one that Sebastian has always been very quick at. Now as F1 teams as drivers alike will tell you, the gap between the best and worst in F1 over a lap is approximately 0.2s, so a net gain for Leclerc of 0.7s does raise eyebrows. Overall, the fact that Vettel was inherently uncomfortable with the lack of rear downforce at almost every track, coupled with the terrible straight-line speed usually meant that Vettel couldn't qualify high enough to enjoy a trouble free race. He was always caught up in the mid-low pack and the Ferrari did not have the performance advantage needed with this era of cars to fight his way through the pack. This in turn led to lackadaisical strategy calls from the team, and probably the worst run of pitstop performances we've seen in many years. When you factor in the pressure he has dealt with over the past six years where he has been expected to fight and to win championships against Mercedes who are quite frankly better in every aspect of F1, and also the fact that he was dropped from the team before the start of the season, then it's no wonder that this year we saw a shadow of the driver we know Vettel is. Vettel gave it a good shot and challenged Mercedes more in 2017 & 2018 than any other driver has managed to do since the beginning of the hybrid era. Of this, he should be proud, and ultimately the reason that he didn't fulfil his dream at Ferrari of winning a championship with them is due to the fact that he was being pitted against the very best, and most dominant F1 team that the sport has ever and may ever see. Even during those two years where Ferrari did mount somewhat of a challenge, Mercedes were still taking 3 in every 4 pole positions, and with overtaking as hard as it is this left Vettel will an awful lot to do. He could have come closer to the title if not for driver errors but overall he didn't quite have the equipment, strategy or reliability to mount a season-long challenge. Had he secured a championship then it would have been a miracle given the strength of Mercedes. Vettel will be back to his best in 2021 with Aston Martin. The days of suffering the pressure of driving for Ferrari with it's internal politics, and having the nation of Italy scrutinising your every move, will be over. He will be in the third best car on the grid which has great drivability, a very stable rear end and a fantastic engine. He will also be a team leader once more in a team that seems a much more pleasant environment than the one he has just left. For these reasons, it's not hard to imagine a much more relaxed and confident Vettel in 2021, and I for one can't wait to witness some more of his stunning drives.

First one to really grasp what went wrong with Seb at Ferrari . I'm actually surprised the time delta was just a few tenths considering the many bad and toxic factors . Summing it up most of those factors did not affect his one lap performance : The time delta to Leclerc did not really change , and my guess is in Abu Dhabi he could not care less about any toxic influence , but the gap remained as is... Frankly , in race his lagging performance compared to Charles was only owed to starting position and often uninspired ,Leclerc friendly strategic decisions , very frequent cockups in pitstops eating away any clever plans to get him into the hunt for good points. Infamously Sebs best race came in Turkey with hopeless unpredictable track conditions for everyone .This resulted in carsetup for all participatents seriously off and bam , hopeless Seb was rhe single driver who kept it all the race inside tracklimits , no spin ,no contact and playing it conservative to please his pitwall ,whereas he thought he could have won it gambling on slicks...Any questions? on a day when sheer car control , mastery risk management and total focus was paramount ,it was his engineering team (and again bodged pitstop)who prevented a even better result... This day was a great equalizer ,as car qualities were not really deciding , it was a matter of not overcooking it and find ways to make the tyres on all corners work without crashing or spinning. To me the SF1000 is simply a car which is a)a mediocre design (a tad better than Haas “vanilla-undevelopped“car and not really better than Saubers 2020 chassis. To add to this is the problem of aero centre of pressure position possibly extremely wrong for Sebs needs , maybe it's also moving forward instead of staying where it is . There are onboard videos showing very frightening griploss at the rear in Situations one would not expect the car to simply wash out at the rear ...(this might also be a tyre temperature thing : your tyre temps go up when cornering ,as you put in energy , if rear tyres at corner entry are already on the verge of too high any more energy put into them will result in grip capacity =oversteer .Leaning on the rears or trying to rotate the car by pushing will tend the car to wash out at the rear , starting the corner with tyre temps lower at the rear will lead to gain of grip whem pushing harder .. you can lean more onto the rears . This issue may well be caused by aero problems .)

Loved reading this breakdown. Ferrari initially built their chassis around a much better engine that was an evolution of the 2019 monster. But since the regulations changed to stop them from exploiting the loophole, they had to design a new engine which as we know was completely whack. To account for the loss of power at places like Silverstone, Ferrari implemented a very low-downforce setup on the car to reduce drag as much as possible which compromised their speed through the corners. Now as we know, Seb loves a sturdy rear end that he is confident will stick when he throws it into copse at 180mph. But when you have a crap chassis with a low downforce setup, it’s very hard to keep under control. That uncertainty can ply with a driver’s head a lot and they start to lose confidence which as we know is a defining factor in whether a driver has a successful season or an unsuccessful one

Congrats... that was one of the best and most interesting 11 minutes of F1 analysis that I have experienced all year. I can only think of TheRace as being your equal. Its been such a let down this year by many other podcasts and RU-vid channels. Keep up the great work. Can't wait for your next content and for your insight when the new 2021 season starts. Hope you produce some videos when the "very BIG news" drops in F1 in January 2021. ~cheers.

Wow. To be compared to The Race is a BIG honour. I’m an independent creator so creating videos takes quite a lot of time scripting, narrating, editing etc. Also, like Kimi “It’s a hobby for me” 😉 so I do my best to try and find time to pump out videos as much as possible. But thank you for the kind words my friend 😊. 2021 is gonna be a fun year!

@@BMPHF1 You're welcome. And as for your accurate description as being "independant", you can't imagine how important that is to us, your audience. When I look at all the bigger F1 analysts, I am sickened at their limp analysis because we all know quite well that they're all OBSESSED with never loosing Access to F1 teams and F1 drivers. Just avoid turning into Marc Priestly.

When Hamilton almost said you people I wonder if he meant to say journalists or something else. Anyway back on point I think once sebs at Aston and he's in a new atmosphere and the pressure of ferrari and Charles if off him as long as the cars good I think he will regain some of his lost performance next season.

FirFirst video I ever saw from you, instant subscribe, don't even need to think about it. Quality content with great insight and while everyone has their biases, you are aware of yours, voice them whenever appropriate and try to correct for them as best you can at all other points. To me, that is a vitally important skill for these analytical videos. Great work, looking forward to binging your previous content in 3... 2... 1...

He is indeed a great and skilled driver,plus how you cannot just love Seb he is so down to earth!He will be strong again,from the very first season at Aston Martin,but can a man himself beat the so mighty Mercedes Duo,i doubt it,is going to take a lot,but even Nico Rosberg said he does not know any other driver with so much self confidence like Seb Vettel,and that is key for him to use!Cheers for the video man great work keep it up!!!!

After the 3rd race of the season, when Leclerc crashed into Vettel from behind. Ferrari knew who was better. After that Vettel is a qualified position around 11-14 position. Ferrari wanted to build confidence in Leclerc, making him think he thrashing 4x times WC. He is their future and so will not allow Vettel to outperformed Leclerc so the team doesn't look too dumb to their fans.

Have to admit, Ide love to see seb and lewis as team mates. i Think unlike the fallout with Lewis and Nico, those two would have a mutual maturity to their rivalry. much in the same way it was played out between Nikki and Hunt. to two pushing each other.

1.Right back at the end of 2019 Binotto betrayed. He said at the SF1000 meeting that he'd love to work with him but he left him behind. Everyone thought that Seb is asking for more $ but he himself told that out of nowhere, even without asking they removed me. So clearly Binotto is the imposter to break his mentality with SF. 2. As we seen and even proved by some Technical Interviews that they're just focusing on Charles's car and leave Vettel behind. In every race as he said "0.300th sec" slower than his teammate. 3. Seb's pitcrew even betrayed very cheaply by not giving the data and even once we all heard the Radio on him saying the Engineer to calculate the timings. So He's not just driving the car in 2020.... He also worked as a Pit crew Engineer, Strategist, Marshal and so on. 4. "Pit box destroyer's".....Do u know how may times the pitcrew made a huge error is changing the tyres and making him lose all the points even with this shitty car. He once finished P7 by pushing the SOFT TYRES to 38 LAPS. Every1 was stunned by his strategy. He also lost many times reaching within 10 positions by his crew. 5. He was instructed by the team by not to race instead help Charles reaching position by holding off the RENAULT behind 6. Whenever he asked to pit the car he was not allowed for most of the races in 2020 7. He even auctioned his helmet. The first charity is Children A Chance, which helps disadvantaged children in Uganda attend school and get an education. The second is Smiles For Togo, an organisation that implements social and sustainable projects for children in Togo. It was sold for a WHOOPING 225,000 EURO. These are things many people don't know much and saying he lost his MOJO. Remember he WON a podium in the wet, he took the flying lap on the 1st lap in WET and clinched 3rd. In that the race each driver made a mistake and got SPUN but SEB not even made 1. You will always be the LION in F1 and We just want u to be happy and be the Underdog u once been at Redbull. Apart from all U r a true gentleman SEB. Don't u dare tell Vettel is not good. REMEMBER he's the World Youngest F1 CHAMPION in history.

To me it’s a combination of two things. One, Ferrari may have quietly used Seb’s car as a platform for R&D with 2021 in mind. With limited track time off season, I think Ferrari decided to use Seb’s car as a test car the entire 2020 season. Two, his drive wasn’t that motivated anymore, which translated to tenths of seconds slower.

As someone who got mentally broken from national level competition and trying too hard to get to international level in a very mental sport (archery), I can confirm the mental aspects are far more important than technical ones.

with some sort of result in hand, I think we could say that you were right. He hasn't been the most adaptive driver to this years aston. Aston also hasn't been able to give seb a race winning car but the few races like in monaco and Azerbaijan where you aren't as reliable on engine power, aston have given seb a decent car and when he is given that look what the result became. A masterful drive in monaco and a p2 in Azerbaijan. I just think that this season proves that seb is far from finished and next year could be seriously intresting.

I compete in motorsports as an enthusiast driver but am no less versed in psychological impacts. The mental aspect of this sport is paramount to a driver's performance. I have had years where I was on fire and brimming with confidence and on the contrary have had seasons where I struggled mightily with my esteem, even to the point of anxiety. I am sure that Sebastian is still a prime driver, and a change in scenery is probably the best thing for him. It isn't surprising to my mind that in motorsports, having a lack of confidence can strike at anytime, no matter one's accomplishments or pedigree.

@BMPHF1 you are absolutely spot on man, I too noticed him closing his eyes during his Red Bull domination days.. He really seemed like a killer especially in qualifying. I also think he just needs a car that suits with a good rear end and then he would do better.. And if he regains his form in Aston Martin, it would be good to see but please god don't be another domination era where one driver again wins championships in a row.. Enough of it already..

In my opinion, Seb had more pressure this year than in his championships. You can't just single one thing and point to it and say this was the cause. Was Seb undermined by politics, yes. Did Charles have better parts, sometimes the cars are always under development. Teammate competition, yes. Everything boils down to leadership, this I think is Toto's true strength is at, take off team pressure to maximize individual performance.

Exactly. I don't understand why this doesn't get talked about. It's not like Ferrari needs to finish higher for the prize money they got more money than they can spend. Also, if Binotto fires Seb and then he out drives LeClerc, all the management are going to get fired. I'm not saying that's what happened. Just saying there are more than 1 reason for Ferrari to screw Seb.
