Being new to my Ipad Pro I’d like to know how to rename my usb stick. When I insert the stick into my ipad it shows up on the left column as ‘No Name’. All the folders on it display on the right with their various folder names. I can rename the folders but how do I rename the actual stick from ‘No Name’ to say utilities? So easy in Windows just don’t know how in IOS…

Interesting one. Flies is basically a shell that pulls data in from the cloud apps you have on your iPad. This would mean that is something disappears from a cloud service, the likely error occurred on OneDrive (in your case) rather than Files.

It depends. Often the file will be saved to your phone's folder in Files unless you specify exactly where you want it to go. To see that folder, you will need to scroll down to the very bottom of the files list. You will see it there. If it's not there, then open Files and look at what has happened in your Recents--if the file downloaded, it will show up there.

Late to the party. Just got an iPad Pro. Looking to switch from my MacBook to all iPad. My question concerns backups and catastrophic recovery planning. The on my IPad folder: Is that just a folder that indicates items “downloaded” from ICloud? Or…is it a separate area that is segregated from the ICloud? Here is real life use case: Let’s say I am creating documents and videos on the iPad. And after creation and use, they reside in the “On my iPad” folder? Are these files NOT being automatically backed up on iCloud? Additionally…should I go in later and add something to a files in the “on my iPad” folder, will those changes be reflected in the ICloud later? Or should I keep Everything in the “Icloud Drive” folder?
@Carl_Pullein
@Carl_Pullein 3 года назад
The downloads folder on your iPad as well as "saved to iPad" will only save files locally. They are not backed up in iCloud. You would need to designate a separate iCloud folder to save your files. You will find, though, that a lot of time time, if your using apps like Garageband, your files will automatically save to the cloud.

Hi i am still a bit confused about where the files from iCloud goes when you open it /“download it” on different device . It seem like if I’ve got a file on my iMac’s desktop (synced to iCloud)and then go to my iPhone trying to open the file i have to download it (there is that little cloud in the corner)in order to open the file and it seem like it occupies space on my phones storage. But when i check the “iphone’s storage” nothing is there 😀 How does it work then? Are files from ICloud taking space from my phone when I want to access it? Thanks 🙂

Not really sure what you mean there, Rick. If you do not designate a folder to save a Pages (or Numbers, Keynote) file, it will save the file in the Pages folder in iCloud. This is helpful as it means when I open Pages I can quickly access the most recent documents I have worked on.

Thank you again for responding. Your videos motivated me to adopt saving by app. Indeed as I am dismantling my old hierarchy of folders by topic or account the OS figures out what type of document I am filing be it Pages, Numbers etc. However for new documents the iOS system is placing the documents straight to iCloud Drive but not in the specific app folder. I can move the documents into the right folder but it seems like an extra step.

Hi Carl: I checked with Apple. They say that the default action for saving new documents(within the app) is to place the document in the iCloud Drive root level. From there the user can move the file to the location of their choice. The reason existing older files find their way to the respective App Folder is because the document already resides on iCloud Drive. Hmmm. swipe down from the centre of your screen and type "Files" in the search box. Or, if you have a keyboard, press CMD+Spacebar and type "Files".

Why would I think iCloud is the same "app" as Files? it's not an App it's a location within Files for storing in the cloud.

@@StuartSeaton Hi Stuart, if you go to Files and copy the image you want, you can paste it in Twitter. Opening the image from Files and clicking on the share sheet will allow you to save the image to your photos.

I created files in numbers❗️And before update to iOS 14.7.1, I had access to them all and now I need permission to get into them ( that’s just 💩💩💩💩 ) . Uggghhhh! You didn’t explain how they work. How you save files. How you find files. Why when you save files and it says “Path: Local”, yet there is no “Local” tab in Files. Why files show in Path but not in Files. Smh

You strayed off course mentioning in a confusing way items that DO NOT have to do directly with Files. I searched “Files” and you came up with more extraneous material than how to use Files and the options. We don’t care about One Drive, Windoz, what you use or don’t use and all the other baloney. Next time address “Files” and don’t go off course. Thanks!

It is not. Android file manager gives you full access to device file structure. Files app on iOS is a sandboxed app. If for example you make a folder and put your photos in it, while on Android they will show on gallery, on IOS you have to export to photos app otherwise you cannot see them.
