A cool thing I learned is that while we used to use mercury vapor bulbs in the United States as well, in the 70s and 80s we switched to high-pressure sodium bulbs, which give off a warm yellow light. There are some HPS-looking bulbs in Midgar as well, most notably in the highway tunnel at the entrance of Upper Sector 7. I know too much about lightbulbs now! Any lampheads out there?
@gingus_627

If you look at a bird's-eye view of Berlin at night you can see the old borders of East and West Beriln because west Berlin has yellow lights and east Berlin uses white lights!

A sad trend in lighting is how HPS bulbs in streetlamps enabled people to better retain night vision vs the 5000K "Daylight" LEDs municipalities are choosing to replace them with. I don't doubt that it's contributed to traffic fatalities at this point.

I did think as I watched this: "Mercury vapor? I see this video is tailored specifically towards me, a person who cares about mercury vapor because I once had to clarify to someone that the Neon Outfit in Dead Cells couldn't be neon because neon has a red-orange glow, not a bright teal."

But FFVIIR might be the toughest act to follow in terms of this. FFXV is a mess, though interesting. Insomnia is an incredible setting but only a slice of it is playable in anything. FFXIII did have Palumpolum which I liked but it was just a weird, civil-unrest-themed dungeon. Anthem might be interesting. Sonic Unleashed could be good too, but its settings, like Grand Theft Auto’s settings and Need for Speed’s settings, are each based on a particular real-world location rather than a thoughtful amalgamation of disparate inspirations. Phantasy Star Universe could be interesting. Mass Effect 2? Jedi: Fallen Order? Now I’m just listing games with settings where I felt engrossed, and not necessarily games whose settings had much real-world architectural influence.

Love to see Midgar pay homage to the NYC and you confirming its links! Progressing through the video and now I see the post-war Tokyo call out for Wall Market! I was thinking of Taiwan for a bit. Also awesome singling out the massage parlor house to jump into traditional East Asian architecture. I definitely felt the same love for the texture of Midgar, its references and homages but could never articulate it like you just did here. Thanks for the video! The use of lighting in Wall Market really elevates that area's "facade" theme - the first time you're there, it's night time, so the whole town is lit with vibrantly colored neon that draws your eyes away from the dingy, ramshackle structures. Plus you're on this fun, weird, wild adventure with Aerith at the time, so Wall Market genuinely *feels* magical during that first experience. The second pass through town happens during the daytime, where you can fully see that Wall Market is, in fact, just as run-down and shitty as the other slums you've visited, it was just hidden by the bright colors and shadow of night.

While the upper sector residential area is quite boring and monotonous, the music in the area hands the place such a warm and almost nostalgic atmosphere. You can feel Jessie's emotions as she's coming back to a home that looks similar to yours (if you lived in a suburb, that is). It felt like coming home after messing around with friends on a summer night, and I think that the music is what makes the otherwise boring neighborhood be such a nice location in the short time we spent there.
