Tell him thanks for his service to his country... Yea, he's not military but anyone doing that kind of difficult, and sometimes dangerous, work building ships for the Navy is serving our country as much as the people manning the ship are.

The USS John Basilone is somewhat of an oddity. The Burke Type IIIs are already coming of the production lines with several already in commission. The USS John Basilone is a Type IIA (technology insert). The Technology Inserts have several enhancements that make it different from the standard Type IIA Burke. However, USS John Basilone is built with a largely obsolete radar. The Type IIAs will be retrofitted with the SPY-6(V)4 and Aegis Baseline 10, and cooling system upgrades during a later depot modernization period. The USS John Basilone is commissioned with the AN/SLQ-32(V)6 Electronic Warfare Suite rather than the much more capable AN/SLQ-32(V)7. The USS John Basilone is fitted with two Mk 38 Mod 2, 25 mm cannons instead of the 30 mm Mk44 Bushmaster II that was first installed on Burkes in 2019. In 2025 the Navy will replace Phalanx CIWS on the destroyers with RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM). You'd think the Navy could have slipped that one in. The USS John Basilone does have the Towed Array Sonar (TB-37U Multi-Function Towed Array) installed instead of the AN/SQR-19 Towed Array Sonar. This system provides greatly improved detection and classification of underwater threats at greater distances. You might want to have mentioned it. The two embarked Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawks can be armed with the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), AGM-114 Hellfire Missiles and AGM-65 Maverick Missiles. USS John Basilone doesn't have the High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance installed.
I’m so happy that they are naming the ships after our falling soldiers that died in battle. Somewhere in that earlier comment, it was mentioned 380 officers in that ship. But, you do mean 380 officers and sailors for that ship. right?

With this, the USN should start to look to retire the Flight I Burkes and make way for the DDG-X or the very least replace all 20 Flight I with Flight IIIs Either way, the USN needs to be build newer ships not upgrade Upgrading is cost effective but only a point

John Basilone was an absolute LEGEND, medal of Honor winner and with tradition, gets a destroyer named after him. Yet Doris Miller who got a Navy cross for firing a .50 caliber during the attack on Pearl Harbor gets a carrier named after him.
