Grievous is the literal definition of “The Rule Of Cool.” He made the entire galaxy fear him, and he was one of the many factors that lead to the Rise Of The Empire. The Clone Wars was an incredible show. However, the show WRECKED him! His only saving grace was his assault on Dathomir.
Can not like this comment due to this line "the clone wars was an incredible show" it actually sucked, if you pay attention then you will realise that TCW was the worst possible piece of content. A abomination. Among its 50 story arcs only two were tolerable "Zygerria" & "Pong Krell On Umbara" everything else is garbage.
even the dathomir thing was pathetic at least in "son of dathomir" (SOD) he actually defeated darth maul with one kick making him retreat same darth maul defeated aayla secura, choked obi wan and mocked mace windu in a fight for grievous to beat him is a W but the catch it happened in a COMIC not in the SHOW its like the show never ever adapts anything that is good for the villains
He was menacing. In Genndy's Clone Wars he managed to wipe out a whole bunch of Force users at the same time, and the battle with Ovi-Wan actually made sense.
In my opinion, tartakosvky did a better job with the villains and some characters better than Filoni and Jorge Luca, Grievous had everything to be a great villain, his tragic history, his skills and intelligence but they only make it a joke, well at least he enters it. top characters nerfed by their creator for the sake of the plot, since he had many opportunities to kill Jedi or win but of course he has to speak and trust himself to let him escape or be saved because if they introduced the 2003 one then it would be all a riot for the jedi.
@@MoreLoreThenThereSeems No it was George Lucas who always wanted Grievous to be portrayed this way, Filoni was likely just following his direction. I agree that Grievous was handled poorly in TCW but I'm tired of people solely putting the blame on Filoni when there's a video out there of Lucas literally describing his idea of Grievous being this twirly mustache Saturday cartoon villain who runs away and does the "I'll get you next time heroes" shtick.
Grievous isn’t the only one, he just got hit the hardest. Everyone in the show has some very inconsistent fighting abilities. Savage Oppress, someone who just recently learned how to hold a lightsaber, is able to beat (or at least temporarily overpower, I can’t remember, it’s been a long time) Anakin and Obi-Wan both at the same time singlehandedly. Asajj Ventress gets beaten by Anakin and Obi-Wan both multiple times in the series, but then after being betrayed by Dooku suddenly is able to overpower them both with the Force and choke them; I get she was more powerful than usual because of her emotional state, but still, to go from losing to either one at a time to overpowering both at the same time seems like way too big of a stretch. Not to mention Cad Bane clowning around with Obi-Wan and Quintana Voss, or Oni-Wan losing to Maul only to be able to hold his own against him and his brother at the same time later. Those are only a few examples, the show is filled with them.
Ventress never actually loses against Anakin and Obi-Wan for the most part, because the pair is simply incompetent together. Individually, they're both a force to be reckoned with but every time they fight together, they accomplish nothing
@@Jdudec367 anakin lost multiple times to ventress He ironically does better against dooku than he ever does against ventress He has only 2 victories against her 1 on yavin prime 2 in tcw season five when she had no light saber's
And meanwhile I thought it was hard being a fan of Jango Fett, watching him randomly jump on the ground to grab Mace’s saber instead of shooting him like he’d normally do. But after watching this, I feel bad for grievous fans 😬
The whole idea behind General Grievous lore wise was for Palpatine to create the ultimate villain, a monster, an icon of terror that would strike fear in the hearts of the Jedi, but more importantly, the hearts of the public. Something that would make the Republic more unified and more accepting of a stricter and more centralized government, aka the Empire. I know most of the things that General Grievous did in the vaster lore were too graphic to be let in a children's cartoon, so instead keep him delegated as a rare treat for the viewers. Someone we hear is constantly kicking ass and taking light sabers, and have someone else take Grievous's place in the battles he gets his ass handed. Meanwhile Grievous is off screen slaughtering Jedi, using biological weapons on planets that the Droids are automatically immune to, and be this shadowy figure that once appears on screen, you know where the animation budget is going.
I remember watching the 2003 Clone wars when i was young and being terrified when he grabbed that Jedi's face with his foot and smashed it in the ground.
That’s definitely why he’s so bad lol it would cost to much to animate him fighting like the 2003 version so they had to hollow his character out to fit
@@oVoxxy also the same reason why Durge couldn’t be in the show becuz of his organic nerve flesh was too hard and expensive (since the show had a lower budget at the time) to animate and as well as the technological limits at the time
Very well made video! I thought Grievous was done dirty in the Filoni Clone Wars. Compared to the Genndy Clone Wars he was a One-Cyborg army. Scary even. He is like a bulldog the Separatists send out to lash out at their enemies and wreak havoc. Instead he is almost a blithering mess in the CGI show. I don't know why Filoni nerfed him so hard. I don't recall you mentoning how he kills so few people in this show. He kills a headstrong and rash Jedi Mon calamari padawan at one point. So he definitely wasn't getting any strong "wins." Your editing was good and humor was good too.
Grievous is my favorite character and seeing him in the clone wars makes me want to cry. I understand the reason he was weaker in Revenge of the Sith because of the force crush, and why he didn’t do anything in the bridge because he wasn’t allowed to engage Anakin in combat and that’s why I like episode 3 grievous but he’s kinda ruined because of the clone wars
In the Revenge of the Sith video game he was much closer to his 2003 counterpart. He doesn't run away from Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan kills him by slicing his chest open.
They made grievous a brute force weilder and while he is ridiculously strong they made him fight primarily like some one like savage opress would rather than show his kaleesh warrior traits
I think Filoni and Lucas did our dear general dirty cause he was like a prototype of Darth Vader and they didn't want two of them. Tho I find Grievous better than Darth Vader, not in the terms of power but in the terms of character building. Since he has more motives to hate jedi, they helped bugs who inslaved and killed many of his people. While Anakin was like "I feel like my wife's gonna die, so I'll listen to an old sith, who has habit of lying and kill everyone who raised me, oh and I won't forget about innocent children who did nothing wrong to me or anyone."
I think Grievous would be better if they'd dedicated a few more episodes that actually fleshed him out instead of being so cartoonishly evil. They never go into why he hates the Jedi and Republic I'm assuming theres a book about him that goes into more detail.
@@rc59191 yeah I guess you are right. But isn't it stupid? Like he had a pretty massive background and story, but most of it isn't canon anymore. I'm not going to even start on how stupid it is to think that people are gonna read something, like yeah some of us will but let's be honest we're watching TV shows to relax and I don't think that Disney would go bancorp just if they gonna make a few more arcs about villans.
Good news guys in the helmet collection Battle of Hypori and his Jedi kills in the 2003 series is restored... They also brought back his legends story (partially?) Idk about his wife and other minor details (we still don't know about his personal life) but they got rid of the Jedi wannabe origin story...
Actually Vader had a great motive too, I mean the jedi did not care about his and his mom and left his mom to be a slave and eventually get killed and they just dislike him and are biased against him and Mace Windu especially was a ass at times and they seem to not be the peaceful protecters they claim to always be and they treated Ahsoka wrong and did not care about Anakin as a child even and kidnap kids themselves and they denied him the seat of master and stiill did not trust him it was absurd and unfair and yeah Padme who he loved was dying.
@@Jdudec367yes, but compared to Grievous, its still low. Since Grievous literally lost everything due to the Yamrii, the Jedi and the Siths. The man lost both of his parents and his first love to the Yamrii during the conflict in disrespectful ways, lost most of his people and his ten wives and thirty children to the starving due to the Jedi cutting the commercial routes because they protected the Yamrii who literally attacked and enslaved his people for several years, after Grievous finally managed to push them back to their Homeworld. Got used as a mercenary by the banking clan to save his people, lost his body due to the sabotage of his ship by Dooku. Lost most of his free will due to the Palpatine and Dooku who modified his brain via sith magic and some technology. Is used for the entirety of the war as a weapon pr a pawn by Dooku and Palpatine. And finally, lost his life at the end by Obi wan Kenobi. And that is all we are talking that is shown. Because most of the time, we only saw his General Grievous face when he appeared, but we never knew how hard it must have been for him emotionally during the Clone wars, like when he is alone or in his quarters. All the pain, the hatred and loss of his family and himself should have been shown, like with Vader who is haunted by his past.
General Grievous was originally meant to be an unstoppable Jedi killer. George Lucas is the one that wanted him to be a stereotypical mustache twirling Saturday morning cartoon villain. One of the worst decisions that George ever made in my own opinion.
My opinion is that Grievous could have worked as a "I'll get you next time, nobody can kill me " villain if he would have been represented as the terifying monster that he was ment to be(cunning, powerfull, calculated and ruthless beyond immagining ). He should have killed Ventress with ease, he should have mortally wounded Ahsoka (and that would have helped in Ahsoka's character development even more), he should have killed at least 4 of those god damn younglings etc etc...and generally get more screen time to kill Jedi (and maybe lose more honorably to Obi wan) I liked him in the movie, it was genious in 2003 CW (even if I don't like that show a lot), but the 2008 series was a Big dissappointment. I suppose I'll w8 for disney to either ruin him totally or make him great again in a new Grievous series or something. and at 22:26 I can agree, I though Jar Jar was ok but a bit too much in the movies, in Clone wars he actually is a good comic relief and support character
so he should only kill female characters (who are always wasted in star wars fiction) now? thats ur idea? its bad if anything they should have had grievous kill jedi council masters, their were 3 years of war enough time for the council members to change
The *"i get to kill you next time though u got away this time"* would work in gendy's grievous cause Ki Adi Mundi & Shaak Ti both GOT AWAY after they lost.
This guy has like one of the best designs ever in Star Wars. The claws on the feet, the reptilian eyes, the four spinning lightsabers, his armor, his visible organs… in the old serie he is white, which is already terrifying, even though he doesn’t have organs, he is more imposing, like this guy is so tall, like 3 meters tall that is so badass… Tartakovsky made him an absolutely gorgeous introduction, and turned him in an op, charismatic, and terrifying villain. Filoni and Lucas turned him into a dumb egocentric cocky machine, as dumb as how bad he fights (I mean, he gets defeated by Ventress because he is basically swinging his lightsabers all over the place non sensically). In Revenge of the Siths he is as least a bit cool, he displays some skills during his battle instead of smashing his sabers in random directions, even though he gets defeated too easily. At least the novelization pointed out that Grievous was striking Obi Wan with 20 hits per second. Just the dumbest thing about Grievous in the movie and TCW, is the fact that he never properly uses his claws. I mean when he gets to grab Ahsoka’s head, he doesn’t smash and crush her skull on the floor like he did in Tartatovsky serie, no, he just throws her backwards. Sure in TCW he kills a random clone with his foot, but man he could do so much more, like using lightsabers with them, switching between hands and feet. Also his running in canon is so awkward, like a cringe cockroach, while back then he was running (not creeping) on the walls like a terrifying reptilian creature. Such a shame that the only episode in which he destroys Obi Wan in 10 seconds was deleted… Plus, the fact that he was overpowered in Tartakovsky serie was okay since all the characters were, and also… is a goddam Jedi killer ! So he has to kill Jedi ! And to be built for it ! Come on Filoni can you at least understand this ?!
If you pay attention then you will realise that TCW was the worst possible piece of content. A abomination. Among its 50 story arcs only two were tolerable "Zygerria" & "Pong Krell On Umbara" everything else is garbage.
my only problem with micro series grievous is... that he basically won while HOLDING HIMSELF BACK i mean if any situation calls for the usage of 4 light sabers then it should have been at HYPORI but grievous destroyed the jedi by using ONLY 2 sabers their is one more problem with the fight at hypori but it has nothing to do with grievous, it rather has to do with how 4 OF HIS VICTIMS lived on (ki adi mundi, aayla secura, shaak ti & k kruhk)
@@ForsakenDreamer7 though i am changing the topic i feel like i should bring it up in my personal opinion in the micro series cartoon Grievous was at his most powerful in the battle of Hypori but after that the writers of that cartoon appear to have depowered or nerfed him abit, which's why we see him being less powerful in the 2nd volume which covers the battle of Coruscant Also i dislike the fact that at least 3 of the jedi (who were supposed to be dead) survived hypori, their names are aayla secura, kkruhk, shaak ti i can see 2 of them living as they had less fatal wounds, but i hate how kkruhk survived this incident, he was clearly supposed to be dead even in the ROTS Novel Grievous claims to have killed kkruhk, also NO ONE talks about the jedi grievous killed on the same planet before daakman barrek died Also do u have a discord so i can send u proof for some of my claims about mace windu? cause we intelligent star wars fans rarely get to contact eachother, most of the star wars fans who do get to message eachother are usually the dumb tcw fans
I don’t know if it was Filoni, Lucas or whatever but they did my character so dirty I deserve so much better, I wish they would show my character how I’m truly meant to be portrayed but I don’t think we will be seeing me in Star Wars content for quite some time
@@tk-6967 There's an old youtube video about the concept creation of Grievous with George Lucas, and he nearly said he always envisioned the character as a mustache twirling Saturday cartoon villain. Lucas was also working alongside Filoni for the production of The Clone Wars, so if what you say is true you'd think Lucas would've told Filoni to portray Grievous as cunning.
@@tk-6967 it was Lucas. The 2003 series came before Episode 3. And when Episode 3 was released, Grevious got his butt kicked. It wasn’t even close. Obi Wan destroyed him. So the 2003 OP version no longer made any sense.
One thing Lucas was afraid was that Grievous would overshadow Vader in fan popularity in episode 3 and the entire prequel series was about Vader. Also it was probably a secondary concern, but it starts to raise lore questions about why Vader seems so permanently immobile but Grievous can be agile, better armed and seems to have better cybernetics than even Return of the Jedi era Vader. So Grievous had to be nerfed and made to look cowardly ( in contrast to Vader..) and that 'cough' would also serve to imply that his cybernetics were less advanced ( again in comparison to Vader-who does not cough and has a more regular breathing)..
The good thing the Clone Wars did was humanizing the Clones and making us feel bad for Order 66 on their party, but things like the Inhibitor Chips, Separate Conference, Dooku, and Grievous is proof that mistakes were made. Tartakosvky wrote Grievous perfectly, but Lucas and Filoni butchered Grievous badly. They made him incompetent and a fool and it makes me wonder how did the Clone Wars not end sooner with incompetent leadership from the Separatists' front, making the Droid Army nothing but jokes, and there was hardly even any Separatists' victory.
He's my favorite character in the clone wars era and I hate how they butchered him in the 2008 clone wars show. I can understand not having him as strong in 2003, but they didn't have to make him a complete coward of a bitch. Since he can't access the force, it makes sense he compensates by being a excellent duelist and a outstanding strategist. Palpatine needed a excellent general for the separatists to combat the republic, but in the 2008 show he's none of these things
@@assertivedolphin you know what I know almost everything about star wars especially general grievous and yeah everything you said was accurate he just wasn't the same honorable warrior from legends or well the clone wars cartoon it was horrible and The whole reason why the gungans even defeated him is 2 reasons 1 his chest was crushed in an dishonest attack from a Jedi and 2 they used these emp like grenades to weaken him more it was terrible and that fight with Grievous and Ventress was weak he only won cause of cheating which isn't something he normally does so he can't use form 4 Ataru no more and he can't really calculate better plans cause I read somewhere they reconfigured his mind with circuits to regulate his actions in other words so palpatine can use him to look decent without making him too strong to destroy the republic so easily
It's the fact they redesigned him in season 7 (for what... 0.2 seconds of screen time?) to make him look more like how he was in ROTS, but we still never actually get to see him on Coruscant. I had to go back and watch '03 Clone Wars to cleanse my palate.
I agree with this video, but I just want to say that I don't fully blame Filoni for Grievous's portrayal in TCW and I'm honestly tired of people saying the fault is all his. George Lucas was the one who always wanted Grievous like this, there's a RU-vid video on the concept creation of Grievous where Lucas literally says he always envisioned him as that mustache twirling Saturday cartoon villain who runs away and does the whole "I'll get you next time heroes" shtick. While I can admit that Filoni most likely agrees with George Lucas, at the end of the day he was just following how Lucas always saw the character, especially since the both of them were working closely together during the development of TCW.
Don't you know the CGI clone wars series was republic propaganda against the syndicate forces. It's the only way it can be explained against the lore. Honestly revenge of the sith is okay if you include the cut scenes where general grievous are included for context.
In ROTS the only Jedi that is referred to as "General" is Kenobi. It was sort of implied that obi Wan was the sole General of the Grand Army of the Republic and that the sole General of the separatists was Grievous. Setting up a rivalry of leadership between the two. This made the line "You lose General Kenobi." A character defining quality. Its was a battle of wits as much as it was a physical battle. TCW diminishes this by making every jedi a general and making grievous constantly lose. I prefer 03 jedi killer juggernaut Grievous and crippled but still capable ROTS grievous. TCW is great in many regards and adds alot to the prequel era. But boy did it drop the ball on grievous. I wish they had kept the 03 character and adapted him into the 08 series story.
That was an entertaining video. One interesting bit of trivia about Grievous is that his coughing and breath problems in Episode III were originally the result of Mace Windu attacking his chest with the Force during the ground portion of the Battle of Coruscant at the end of the 2003 series. Though I suppose they chose to go with that portrayal in the new iteration of the Clone Wars because it was better known and therefore more recognizable, and since their version retconned the other they didn't need to adhere to its lore.
Yea the new reason why Grievous was already weak and coughs a lot before Ep3 was due to his Cybernetic implants which put so much strain on his organs and the technology wasn’t so advanced around his time
The Grievous we saw in the CGI series was closer to how George Lucas envisioned him and apparently he didn't like how Tartakovsky depicted him in Clone Wars. Per George's own words he wanted Grievous to be less like another Vader and more a mustache twirling Saturday morning cartoon villain and made sure he was depicted as such when he was involved in The Clone Wars. So the reason Tartakovsky Grievous and Filoni Grievous seem like two different characters is because they really are.
I saw another video showing the interviews with grenndys team and they even say that george lucas hadn't finalized the character for grievous yet. Lucas wanted a goofy loser villain so dave filloni made him that way in the 3d cartoon. So yeah I guess he literally is two different characters....
Yeah both are at fault but Lucas is more to blame than Filoni. If Lucas approved of Genndy's version of Grievous than that would have been how Filoni would portray him in his cartoon, but because they both worked closely on the show he was mostly just following Lucas's ideas.
I recall this change being all Lucas’ decision, because he felt that Grievous being the unstoppable Jedi terminator would somehow take away from what Vader would become. He wanted Vader to be the ultimate Jedi butcher, after Order 66 they went into hiding purely because of Darth Vader being such an effective Jedi killer. Lucas also felt he’d just feel like Vader without the force and wanted to further separate them, but I don’t think Grievous being the monster he was in Legends would affect Vader at all, especially since Canon has started to show Vader a bit less than he should be, like being too banged up in Jedi Survivor, not killing Reva, and then losing the way he did to Obi Wan in the final fight in OWK, plus the Inquisitors take away a bit of Vader’s original reputation as this boogeyman who was singlehandedly responsible for almost wiping out the Jedi survivors of Order 66. So the change to Grievous is now more pointless, even from Lucas’ perspective because of the introduction of the Inquisitors and Vader’s appearances in Jedi Survivor and OWK.
George Lucas is his own worst enemy. For every amazing idea he has he comes up with a ridiculous one. All they had to do was nerf grevious without making him a joke
There was an inherent design problem with General Grievous. If George wanted him to be such a weak coward, he shouldn't have allowed him to be the best-designed character in the franchise. You see the guy and think, Terminator in Star Wars, but instead you get some very killable guy Never understood his over-exaggerated moves. He's a robot, he needs very understated moves with surprising strength. I always thought that the kit-fisto fight was a direct comparison to the grievous intro in CW 2003. In both, Greivous allows the Jedi to escape, but in the earlier version its very clearly a win. It was like a direct insult to anyone who enjoyed CW Greivous. Fisto never seemed like he was gonna lose, it always felt like he had the upperhand in that episode.
I was a die hard fan of grievous back when I first saw him in revenge of the sith, then the animated show just blew me away. Afterwards I read all I could about him. Loved his tragic backstory which became a prototype for what darth vader would become. Then the new clone wars series came out. I largely ignored it at the time. Then people told me to watch it since I liked starwars back then. Never watched the show, mostly due to me hearing about him getting his ass handed to him by gungans and the whole retcon of his original backstory. Love you General(2003) and uhhhh.... *ignores the 2008 one.*
And another thing about the ruined grievous is that Grievous in lore was made by Sidious to be the "perfect public enemy", he was made to make people fear him more than them fearing loss of their rights and liberty, and in the show he was supposed to be the risk, the stakes, when the protagonists are facing a villain, the audience should be worried even if they know they would come out alright. When the good guy overcome the villain, the audiences should have a sign of relief that they have survived. But Grievous in the TCW Doesn't have that. He's been written as such a loser and sucker that we know he's just going to lose, and there's no sense of danger anymore. The Tartakovsky depiction of Grievous was that villain. Even if you have watched the prequel films and know that Ki-adi, Aayla and Shaak survived the encounter, you still worry that they're dead or not going to make it, the returned Darth Maul is that Villain, and you actually feel his menace being a massive wrench in anyone's plans, even the Droid Gunship on Onderon and Tactical droid on Quell can make you worry, but not Grievous in TCW. When you hear him or see him, you know the game was rigged from the start, And he's not the man in checkered suit or holding the shovel.
It’s not only grievous that’s character is nothing like he’s supposed to be. Dooku was made to be just evil despite being morally grey in the movies. Anakin was WAY to stoic and charismatic. People honestly give Filoni too much credit as a good writer and director. I mean it’s not just him, even in live action Disney butchered all the major characters in some way or another.
Bruh you totally get me I HATE how they cant let grievous “win” without losing something😡 And look at 2003 hes fighting five jedi and besting them all. AND HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE FOUR ARMS!!! which means he could probably fight 8 jedi with four lightsabers Which means a jedi fighting him one on one is GOING TO DIE BEYOND QUESTION In My Star Wars head canon, Grievous is impossible to defeat in a duel as hes way too quick
there is actually a [i think] interview or behind the scenes from the 2006 show that says and I'm trying NOT to paraphrase here but here's the quote quote: "We were told early on to make grievous a "bad ass Jedi killer" because I think he was having trouble deciding what he was going to do with him, however towards the end of season 2 of the clone wars Lukas apparently told us to bring it in line with his vision which was more of a "mustache twirling bad guy" like from the sliver screen era" :end quote
so while agree with you that 2003 grievous was bad ass as hell, lukas really had no idea what he was going to do with him and went the opposite way with him. so it's not completely clone wars[CNs] fault. I personally think we should just be happy we got to see a bad ass grievous at all. but that's just my opinion.
I don’t know. The Revenge of the Sith PS2 game had a better fight with him and Obi Wan while having retain his overwhelming fighting skills from the first Clone Wars series that’s arguably better than the film.
I feel like the biggest problem with Grievous is the same thing that kills a lot of cool villains, the heroes impenetrable plot armor. They didn’t really waste time showing him slaughtering nameless Jedi so Almost all of Grievous’ fights are against heroes we see in later films so he can’t win because he would kill them and in the case of Ahsoka cutting his arm off or any situation where he has a Jedi trapped, they write themselves into a hole and have to come up with some bs way for them to escape like a child overpowering a machine demigod we’ve seen literally throw full grown men around in the same series. In the end Plot Armor is stronger than durasteel
Im a huge grievous fan and I agree General grievous deserved better I'm thinking of making a fan film So I'm laning on making a fan film restoring him to his former 2003 glory
Horrible case of villain decay when it came to General Grievous. When it came to his introduction, he was a Jedi hunting-killing mechanical monster with freakish, mechanoid fighting skills that overwhelmed his opponents who I even thought filled the void left by Darth Maul, and a brilliant tactician. Then they just did him dirty by making him an inept chump and a feeble coughing weakling who lost to even Gungans.
At that point, Grievous is almost a fighting-comic relief (in the Clone Wars). And by the way, i am also loving the Clone Wars series. I love him as a villan because of that funny yet repulsing coughing because those things should not happen to what is almost an Android as this point. So i believe that although he is suppose to be this deadly opponent once, he is no longer that good, because he turn too many of his human parts into droid part, making him less force superior than full Jedi. That's why he 'never win' anymore. But if they had make him too strong, his 'dark side comedy' would have been 'too dark' for the series 'lighter tone'. I still love him as a vilain and i am always happy when he appear in an episode... But yes, i totally see where you stand and what you say is accurate. The original series show him so much more powerful and a real threat for Jedi than the Clone Wars animated.
Ok I know I'm really really late but I wanna say something about your comment 1: Grievous not is human 2: the droid part's make I'm more agile and deadly because when him was organic not fight Jedis 3: with his droid part's and augmentations become the most physical strong single character without the force or something else because he never was sentient to the force even a little bit That's all I have to say
@@Destroic_ Then why did Dooku trained him into the Jedi Art... Why would Dooku lose his time with someone with no force power of any kind? Let's hope something do rise up from the ashes...
@@jessikapiche6097 Dooku trained him because if he wanna kill the Jedis he need to know the way of fight and how broke they attack's and we'll that make him much dangerous and Grievous was modified with machines what made him learn all fight techniques from the Galaxy so being trained for Count Dooku made him learn everything about the Jedis and how kill them more easily and if I not remember bad in a novel was explained that Grievous was becoming more and more dangerous making it a matter of him surpassing Dooku as soon as it comes to fighting techniques
@@jessikapiche6097 well Obi wan was the master of the most defensive form of the Jedis techniques, so in part yes Obi wan was the most ultimate defensive Jedi
I understand your feelings about the matter, I feel like he could have been done better. But I think it’s less the lack of understanding of who Grevious is, and more a lack of abilities to properly show them using the 3D engine they were using. I mean, honestly most of the movements in the beginning were hella janky and as the show went on they got more experienced using the engine and were able to make better scenes in general. That and well, at this time Grevious was only really capable at killing clones and lesser Jedi. He doesn’t really kill all that many Jedi Masters and he really struggles against them. Also, big advantage that Jedi have over Grevious is their ability to use the force, which is why Obi-Wan could quite literally body Grevious in the early stages of the war but not in the later stages because Grevious finally figured out a way to force them into a lightsaber duel.
Filoni just hates Grievous for some stupid reason and must pay for his crimes!!!! all the episodes where Grievous shows up should be reworked using the Season 7 model which is movie acurate and change him into what his actual character is and was meant to be, we should make a petition or something, our boy deserves so much better than that
Here’s my personal head cannon: 2003 General Grievous was somehow destroyed doing who knows what, so the separatists tried to create a new general grievous, but couldn’t get him quite right. They didn’t have any good designs or people to create a new Jedi-killing warlord, but they tried, leading to the abomination we see in the “cannon” Star Wars media. To sum it all up, my head cannon is that general grievous is a title, not a single character.
He tells Dooku he won because he doesn’t want to admit defeat, and use the logic that since he forced Fisto to retreat, but Dooku quickly puts him in his place by calling him out on that lie. It’s not “weird”, it makes sense why he doesn’t want to admit his failure to Dooku. Also, while I agree Grievous was not handled well by Filoni and Lucas, comparing him to the 2D Grievous in a quite exaggerated Clone Wars micro series (which I love just as much as the next guy alright), is honestly not a good comparison. I love Grievous, and once again; he was handled badly, but some of these comparisons are not very well thought out, just saying. I agree with most of you, but some of these arguments don’t really mesh well with me, still, him being defeated by Gungans is sad. If he took out more than just three before being defeated, like at least ten or fifteen, then I would feel less bad about it.
2007 Grievous: Loses to Ajaji Ventress in a one on one duel. 2003 Grievous: Nearly kills Ventress and Dirge before having faced a single Jedi in combat, armed with nothing but a Magna Guard staff, barely getting a scratch.
the thing is it doesnt even make sense in universe. I mean someone as powerful, competent, and clever as Sidious would never order Grievous to be the General of his Army or tell him his secrets, if he has to be saved from Gungans. And to trust him to capture him and attack Coruscant? Never. I mean how should someone who loses to Gungans beat the Jedi that guarded the chancelor? Its so stupid. And even worse is his change in backstory. From a broken warrior that had everything taken from him, that fights Jedi for actually really understandable reasons, to some bloke who thought a metal armor would look nice. Embarassing.
Just over a year ago I would have agreed with you about grievous being the weakest part of the show. But after watching the clone wars for the third time now, I think Grievous is handled pretty well actually (not perfect, I would still have liked more badassery though not on the level of 2003 clone wars). They are indeed two different characters, but also from two very different shows. 2003 is over the top untamed force powers and battles. Clone wars 2008 is way more restrained in being cool almost. It’s more about the development of characters and story. So first of all, 2003 grievous wouldn’t fit in 2008 show obviously. That I always knew. But now I like the toned down version more, because it feels more realistic. Keep in mind, and this was said even in 2003 show: grievous had no force powers, he must have intimidation, fear and surprise at his side to succeed. If not, he should flee. This is what he did in 2008. (Again, I would have liked to see him kill more enemies and jedi in lightsaber combat). So it’s perfectly reasonable that he uses droids and nasty tactics to his advantage, he must make up for his lack of force powers in some way. Also why he lost to Ventress can be explained. Grievous was trained to fight and kill jedi, not dark side users. Jedi and sith have different combat methods and fighting skills. So he wasn ‘t up to the task of defeating asajj (who even sidious became worried about her power) CONCLUSION: The biggest crime imo of the clone wars 2008, is not So much the portrayal of Grievous, but showing too much of him losing instead of winning and being a force to be reckoned with. (Which was done right in the unfinished arc, crystal crisis on utapau)
Thoughts on his Tales of the Empire appearance? Little bit of a return to form for him I would say, and what’s insane is that the group of night sisters he takes out were certainly more competent and dangerous than the gungans lmao. His choreography didn’t look completely nonsensical this time and the way he mocked the mother’s last words to Morgan by telling her to run was terrifyingly brilliant. That was also a great callback to the micro series where he tells the droid attack on the Wookiees guy to run “you only prolong the inevitable.” This appearance might join his 2003 version in my head cannon.
Grievous was introduced as a Horror Movie Monster, who notably raised the stakes when Dooku was able to fend him off in a practice duel without breaking a sweat. CGI Grievous is a Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain who couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag...with a lightsaber...
Will you ever make a video of how Jedi themselves are often portrayed as being dumber than bricks against non force using opponents? Even moves like Force Speed not making an appearance in this series?
One of the best words to describe Filoni's Clone Wars Grievous is emasculated. At least in ROTS Grievous was on his death bed dealing with a crushed chest/organ sac. Though the final duel between Obi-Wan and Grievous is much better in the ROTS novelization. On top of everything else I also felt like he was eventually booted from the stage. Like you said he's one of the most important characters in Star Wars, but where was he??? Hanging out at Dooku's house??? He only appeared in a handful of episodes throughout all 7 seasons. Grievous's "canon" backstory is sooo dumbed down compared to his original EU one as well. Oh and his badass design totally screams Saturday morning mustache twirling villain lol.
9:31 "He looks Terrifying." I totally agree with you, but did you have to use the frame where he looks like he had the universes worst case of the Mondays? You're talking about how scary he looks and I'm just sitting here laughing at at how much he looks like he wants to punt an annoying child.
i have a perfect "lost episodes" arc for 2008 clone wars, it's more or less volumes 1 and 2 of the 2003 run broken into 1-3 episodes in on their own. that way General Grievous would get mutable wins and remind fans that he's feared in the galaxy, sure it would retcon every single time he showed up before hand. he turned several Jedi into either into thinly sliced lunch meat, or leaves them in a state where they can't be recognized instantly. as well as bringing back Captain Fordo and most of the arc trooper squad.
the separatists were done dirty in general. compare the droids for example to the movies. they severally dumbed them down for the clone wars (in the movies they use cover, fire and manuver, they take crouching positions, they run to cover ground often, etc. while in the clone wars almost always just walk slowly) and the droids were never massively smart.
Same deal with Ventress. Her mission was to terminate Skywalker, and Lucas did a flip flop and made her an errand girl in the CW movie... Which never got fixed. I never agreed with her arc and there are many similar problems across the show that make trying to enjoy both clone wars together very jarring.
I agree with you. Grievous in the 2003 series was an infinitely better villain than the 2008 series. However I guess the reason Filoni and team made Grievous more of your typical clumsy, inconpetant cartoon bad guy because he was kinda like that in Revenge Of The Sith. In my personal opinion 2003 CW Grievous and Ep3 Grievous were also very different. Ad I do think 2008 Grievous is more like his movie counterpart. Of course, I don’t see why the creators wanted to make Grievous more like his Ep3 version, since a lot of the characters who weren’t that well written in the prequels were changed to be better and more likable people in the 2008 CW (like Anakin) So why couldn’t they just make Grievous just as much of a badass war tactician like he was in the 2003 CW and unlike Revenge Of The Sith Grievous? Well, I don’t know. It’s also a possibility Lucas wanted Filoni and company do this change, but that’s just a wild theory. Anyway great video! It was really entertaining.
@@MoreLoreThenThereSeems I didn’t want to do that. But even that version is superior. For the sole reason alone that he actually acts like Grievous in personality. 2008 grievous doesn’t match his personality, combat style, lore, or choreography. Rots Grievous stinks but he is a better representation when you look at the bigger picture. May be less likeable, but a better representation.
@@assertivedolphin i'm just sick of people putting 2008 and RotS Grievous in the same box. RotS Grievous makes sense with 2003, after his torso was crush't Grievous was weak and he new it, in 2003 Grievous was strong but he wasn't stupid. so it RotS knowing he was weak, he fled. to some up what happened: RotS Grievous is a logical continuation of how he was in 2003, meanwhile 2008 takes all the bad parts of RotS Grievous, exaggerates there, make there worse, adds in some new shity stuff, and then gets rid of everything good. and also it make no sense in lore legends or "canon"
28:03 This nitpick isn’t even a nitpick. Stopping to do nothing has an effect on the plot, and it is not a nitpick. Ahsoka lives in Fight #1 between him and the Citrus Tail because he does nothing in between two scenes for 20 seconds. That’s a serious issue, and it’s the same reason Barry Allen has to be deemed an insufferably inconsistent character every time he makes himself known.
I'd also like to point out that in the prequels when General Greivous fought Obi-wan, it was pretty plain to see that Obi-wan was struggling against Greivous's barrage of attacks. Obi-wan was also probably the best fit to take on Greivous seeing how Obi-wan's style is extremely defense oriented. Any other combat style and you wouldn't know how to defend against Greivous, and that was just his more orthodox attacks, not using all his flips and kicks from the 2003 series. Filoni shafted Greivous in every sense.
The thing with making Grievous a coward and a blowhard is disappointing, but wouldn’t be objectively bad on its own- were it not for the fact that Grievous’ in universe position inherently makes him one of the most important villains. The show makes him so much of a loser that how he’s portrayed makes his in-universe status feel completely illogical; in his last episode “Necessary Bond”, Grievous fails to take down LITERAL CHILDREN on top of failing his mission to capture the Hondo pirates. The show has this weird need to actively undercut Grievous, as you brought up, but does so to a point you genuinely question how the Separatists lasted at all or why Sidious and Dooku bother to keep him around (yeah, Separatists are supposed to lose the war, but they should probably at least be a believable threat that the Republic would do what Sidious wants).
According to the “great writer” George Lucas He didn’t make general grevious cool and more of a coward cause he wanted earth Vader to own this characterization only on Darth Vader. Shit I wrote Earth Vader
its weird cause every villain in the prequels movie are made to be part of what Anakin would become and grievous would be his robotic Jedi murder machine side.
Obviously 2003 grievous is awesome and op but my take from that movie is that everyone was way too op. Like no way could you take 2003 grievous that could 1v5 and then transfer him over in RoTS where he loses to Obiwan. The clone wars series makes everyone more grounded and true to the movies. Sucks that he doesn’t usually win and he looks a bit weird but it matches his RoTS counterpart better. But yes I agree grievous was done dirty.
To be fair in the clone wars with the white cool grievous had his chest crushed by mace and that is how he got his cough and why he is different. So if they were staying with mace crushing his chest then this makes sense. I personally don’t have a problem with the way he is in this. He can’t do all of the stuff he used to be able to because had to change the way he looks which would force him to fight different.
When you talk about the prequel movie with all due respect, ask yourself this, would you be functioning at full capacity if all of your vital organs were crushed?
I remember showing my soldiers the 2003 cartoon while deployed. ALL of them were like, "wait, there's ANOTHER clone wars show?...holy crap it's AWESOME! And Grievous..."
I have no idea who you are or how I got here, but I agree. Please forgive me while I go on a small rant of my own. They must've realised that Grievous at some point in the future would need to fight against either Orbital Wan Kenobi, Anaking Skyjoger, Ahsoka Butano or other main characters so they had to nerf him. If you put 2003 Grievous against any of them he would either kill them (with some dificulty probably), criticaly injure them or make them retreat. Not only was he an extremely skilled warrior before the cybernetic enhancements (don't know if this is only in legends or is in canon too), he was built and trained to kill jedi by a skilled ex-jedi master. Also, is it just me or 2003 Grievous design looks cooler than 2008 and onwards? There he looks more bulky, taller (or at least it feels like that) but he still was fast as heck and concealing most of his body with the cape was a nice addition. Him using both his legs and arms while fighting looked cool. There he actually felt like a unstoppable killing machine. I would also like to add that he was a nice counter to jedi, which from how overpowered they were and still are in both legends and canon is something that was sorely needed to level the plainfield. It might've been extremely hard but I feel that 2003 Grievous' deisgn, if translated to the 3d artstyle of 2008 Clone Wars, would've looked amazing, maybe even more intimidating.
My personal biggest problem with clone wars grievous is at he is much more cowardly than he’s meant to be even in rots he only retreats strategically to prolong his ability to lead the droid army his background as a former kaleesh warlord is proof he isn’t meant to be cowardly he’s meant to be strategic and a truly honourable warrior
I remember a guy earning a gold medal in mental gymnastics when he was trying to defend Grievous getting his shit pushed in by Gungans in hand to hand combat and still trying to reconcile that he was a prolific Jedi killer
17:10 is the point where it shows exactly how he should have been fighting agile and with a fix of the design and with this fighting style he would have been a perfect image of who general grievous is
Why he’s upset is because the original clone wars grievous was like a powerful warlord but George Lucas wanted Grvos to be a mutchtas twirling villain but why he was so powerful in the OG CW is because George wasn’t very involved because he was busy with Revenge o sith and wasn’t doing mutch with it but in the new CW George was more heavily involved and had more say in all of the crickters
