The 2003 Clone Wars was excellent. But more importantly, it Introduced the newest Evil villain to the dark side. General Grievous had one of the best evil introductions the series has ever seen. Back when General Grievous was a respectable evil villain... it was a better time...

I recently private this video after watching it again because I was embarrassed by the effort I put into it at the time... After coming back around to it I realized that I shouldn't try to hide it away, but rather leave it up to see where I started. So that I can come back to it every now and again to see if things actually got better or not. My reaction was legit even more cringe than the original video lmao.

There is a reason why Grievous, in his old backstory, was regarded as a demi-god by his people even before his cyberfication. Good I wish that carried over to Clone Wars and then the new canon.

Honestly, current cannon grievous is stronger than his 2008 portrayal while also being weaker than his 2003 self. They seemed to balance him between the two extremes in the canon books and comics.
@thegreatgamers9812

@Carson Lawler Ok, so Grievous has had some new canonical books and comics added to the StarWars universe; in those new books and comics, Grievous is stronger than he was portrayed in the clone wars Tv show, but he's also weaker than he was shown in the 2003 clone wars animation.

@thegreatgamers9812 3 года назад
@@joker-0723 he's faster; he's fought Mace Windu to a standstill and started copying his lightsaber style, and he's also killed a good variety of Jedi. Honestly, he really just looks weak in the 2008 series because he keeps fighting against high-ranking Jedi wrapped in plot armor. So yeah, his canonical skills are better than what we see in the clone wars series, but also worse than the Jedi killer we've seen in the 2003 animated series.
@josephperez2004
@josephperez2004 3 года назад
@@thegreatgamers9812 To be fair, a big part of Grievous is psychological warfare. He's not as powerful as a Jedi Master at their best, but that Master is only as powerful as their connection with the Force. Exhaustion, fear, uncertainty, distraction, all of these factors work to weaken how effective the Jedi is in combat. And it has a cascade effect. The more you keep an enemy off balance, the more desperate and unfocused they become. Heck with Shaak Ti, the Togruta he fought again on Coruscant, she is still terrified of him even though she's probably in much better shape than the their first meeting. That fear and the fact she needs to protect the Chancellor keeps her on the defensive, running away from Grievous rather than fighting him if she has any choice. The scene where Grievous is training with Dooku gives some weight to this, as the Sith points out how the key to victory against the Jedi is to break their focus.

what I absolutely love about grievous here really is his style. his fighting is full of flourishing, flips and spins and all kinds of crazy moves. but examining it closer, none of it is done pointlessly. Greivious moves in an almost surgical fashion, every movement, no matter how extreme, is always purposeful. it really gives the sense that he's both incredibly skilled to pull these moves off, and incredibly intelligent to use them effectively. compare that to how grievous fights In ep3 and 08, where he's constantly spinning his blades for show.

People would've just laughed at the bad CGI or even if it was good the amount they'd need would be excessive just for one scene. It's both a blessing and a curse, as some people utilize it very well, so much so that sometimes they show us stuff we really need to put a cap on. Just because something can be shown doesn't mean it should be, but heck that's a different conversation. TLDR in animation yeah they're able to do all sorts of stuff that wouldn't translate well into the movies.

From what I recall during original talks from legends grievous being not op during his last fight with kenobi. When mace window crushed his internal organs it basically royally screwed with his system, add the fact that since the beginning of episode 3 he was on the run and dogged all the way to utapau. Makes for a more believable excuse on why he was the way he was from 2003 clone wars to live action. Also lets be honest, ain't no way they could have made him move in cgi like in the show XD though damn that would have been sick. Meanwhile new clone wars grievous is a joke.

Tartakovsky took the idea of the droids to the absolute limit with Grivous. Up till now we've had jedi duels as if they're sword fights. Grivous, beyond just the presence, fear, and his treatment as a general and warrior (and thus respect we feel towards him), dials the axes of articulation to 11. In every respect, a Jedi is limited where he is not. He can wield as many lightsabers as he wants, use any limb he wants, move in any direction he wants, walk on any surface he wants. It is a Queen chess piece against a collection of Pawns, and Tartakovsky makes us feel completely and utterly overwhelmed with his direction and design. And damn do you know how many knives I picked up with my feet cus of this scene? It was not zero.

One way they could’ve fixed this was to somehow write it into the script that once Anakin turned to the dark side, he would go against Grievous as part of killing the separatist leaders on Mustafar. And he would win. That would mean Obi-Wan would have to lose to Grievous though, or at least let him escape. Let’s say Obi-Wan let’s Grievous escape. Anakin returns, not to Mace Windu preparing to visit the chancellor, but he’s just chillin, and Anakin tells him Palpatine is a Sith Lord. Then the rest plays out basically the same. And once Vader is done at the Jedi Temple he goes to Mustafar and he fights Grievous and wins. I would also keep Grievous killing Shaak Ti on the Invisible Hand, which would take his line “I have something else planned for you” make more sense by taking her with him rather than just tying her up in electrical circuits. I didn’t realize I was going to make a whole scenario, but I did. If anyone has any thoughts that would be epic.

At this point, you could call the Gungans slave traders, because they owned Grievous.

I feel that general grevious is still a very capable warrior in Revenge of The Sith, in his first "fight" with anikin and obi won he sees this as a tactical disadvantage, being surrounded in close quarters by two of the strongest Jedi on the council without any backup. The fact that he worms his way out of it unscathed is impressive on its own. Even in his duel with obi won he was going toe to toe with the master of defence, while not even being force sensetive. You have to realize that he does not have the force on his side during his duels. So the fact that he disarmed, beaten him, and was seconds away from killing the master of defence while anikin (the chosen one) could not even disarm him. I find that pretty impressive. Though I can't say the same for clone wars grevious. He was terrible. Though he showed some pretty good fighting skills for a person without the force he just was not nearly as Inteligent as the original clone wars and Revenge of The Sith grevious.

I think if they had just gone a little harder with Grievous in the movie, like having Obi-Wan get dangerously close to getting decapitated while he tried to cut off one of Grievous's hands (i.e. Grievous strikes Obi-Wan's robe), it would have gone a long way to making him less of a joke.

I would have loved to see this Grievous in The Clone Wars. My idea for how they could port him over and keep his intimidating presence and prowess without nerfing him as hard as they did is this. He is introduced much like he was in the 2003 Clone Wars, through show-don't-tell and silent, distant or imposing shots of him to build his presence, the first time The General actually fights the main cast like Obi-Wan and Anakin in the show he beats them, badly, with our heroes only getting out through sheer luck. Then as the series goes on they start to last longer in their fights with him, learning his moves and growing stronger, before long they're matching him step for step and often dueling him to a standstill. Then finally they beat him in a fight, they surpass him, it would show The Audience that the main characters didn't just win out of being The Protagonists, they won because they *beat* him, that they grew strong enough through The Clone Wars to finally defeat this monster in a fight.

In fact, all of the above is better suited for Shaak Ti - Grievous interacts with her most often. And if on Hypori he behaved with togruta , as with the rest of the jedi - mercilessly tried to kill, then on Coruscant he is with her... merciful. Even too much. General only talks to Shaak Ti, while Roron Corobb and Foul Moudama he silently tries to kill. Not only did he not kill her, he also left her on Coruscant. And the cyborg-kaleesh talks to togruta as if he is about to start flirting. In the superhero animated series of the 90s and 00s, one technique was used: *"The villain/villainess has a strong interest in the heroine/hero or conversely."* . It is possible that the same thing was planned in *"Clone Wars"* . Grievous' attitude to Shaak Ti has changed too dramatically, as if there was something else between the attack at Hypori and the attack on Coruscant. Considering that Qumaen cannot fly to Kalee and communicate with the remnants of his family and people, and how easily he kills jedi, he is sorely lacking in pleasure. He might have decided that one jedi needed to be defeated, but not killed, in order to fight again with pleasure. Shaak Ti is perfect for this - she has already faced Grievous and survived, she is one of the best masters of the Order, her students died, and she is a woman in the dawn of strength. And if we add here polygamy among the kaleesh, love experience and beauty before the loss of the body, it is quite expected that the attitude of Qumaen jai Sheelal to Shaak Ti will have an intimate character, even if only the head, heart and lungs remain of him. It would be similar to the attitude of Hannibal Lecter and Clarissa Starling in *"The Silence of the Lambs"* : Grievous will test Shaak Ti's fighting skills, tactical mind, patience and caution, while he will always be polite and honest with her, forcing togruta to behave the same way towards him; Grievous will be pleased when Shaak Ti can outwit and captivate him; Grievous can even show a little compassion for Shaak Ti because of the death of her padawans, who were like children to her, and only 4-5 out of 30 children survived at cyborg-kalish, and the death of a children is not an empty sound for him. If they had clashed after the events on Coruscant, their relationship could have passed into the category of "Neutral-Positive" - cyborg-kaleesh and jedi-togruta could calmly and confidently walk side by side and perform special missions together, but at the same time officially remain enemies. In the end, Qumaen can save Shaak Ti alone or with 2-3 random padawans from Order 66, then split up or stay together, finally becoming allies. And if Grievous decides to go further than exchanging pleasantries with Shaak Ti, they will become lovers or de facto spouses (they will have enough time to get closer in all respects).

He has so many lightsabers from slain jedi yet it's shown he'll retreat when given the chance if there's the slightest hint of failure. Real Grievous was supposed to be the original Darth Vader. This is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like GTs version, which makes no sense considering that series was made specifically as a marketing ploy for ROTS. TCW began 5 years after the film released. The closest Grievous got to this version of the character was the one where Kit Fisto and his padawan were trapped in his lair. Even in his first one on one with Ahsoka he was relatively terrifying. He still was a threat to any non named Jedi, but he was just a victim of plot armor. Well I suppose one can go with "From a certain point of view, Yoda is the most powerful in the force; but Mace Windu is the most deadly in the use of the force." It could be argued perhaps that most Jedi are held back by sentiment, and lack the strength of conviction needed to execute an impressive offense; which is probably why Mace Windu stands out so much. Where as the Jedi on a whole seem to go with defensive measures, Mace has no qualms of striking quickly and ruthlessly. Which brings us back to sentiment: If Yoda had Mace's personality and they had a fight I think most people would probably agree that Yoda would win, but since Yoda is... well Yoda, I think people would then give the fight to Mace. Such is the problem when one goes with tactics to stop the other with minimal harm done, and the other goes with tactics to destroy.

This discussion makes me think about Ashoka’s introduction in The Mandalorian. Some people think she needed a heroic intro in that episode, but the way she was revealed was very mysterious and intense: hiding in the shadows, cutting down henchmen with only the occasional glow of her sabers in the dark. It was actually a perfect way to show her to new audiences who didn’t know her while showing her as a reformed grey jedi, or antihero, to old fans. I’d like to see your take on that.

I interpret the arm splitting scene scene slightly differently. General Grevious is locked in the vault with 2 Jedi, it is a confined space with not much maneuverability for a person of his size. It's the whole reason they are just standing in one place trading lightsaber blows after the doors close. Space is what Grevious needs to thrive in combat as agility is one of his greatest strength. The situation is more dire for Grevious than it would first appear based on his performance so far. If the Jedi grow bold and coordinate to attack him from opposite sides, or start using Force powers, he risks being beaten as he has little room to dodge. For his safety, Grevious needs to ends the fight quickly, and so reveals the existence of 2 other arms to break their spirits. For example, that moment when they are both blocking his sabers and they are all paused, one of them could have done a Force Push with their free hand to propel him into the wall, but they were so scared by the 4 arms that's all they could focus on, not thinking of ways to win the fight, but just "I'm dead, I'm dead, I'm dead..." You can see it in both their eyes just before they are both slain. If they had kept their cool when the arms split like Windu and tried ranged Force Powers before he fully armed himself, they may of had a chance. Or heck, pull one of the lightsabers from his belt and start dual wielding like him now that you're fighting in close quarter where he can't move around.

That's actually a good idea for what went wrong- as time went on and Jedi survived contact with him (due to Palpatine wanting to spread the word, and his effectiveness being hamstrung, again by Palpatine's machinations), he became less shocking. He wasn't the flash of white across the background in a holo message, he was an open threat. His cybernetic augments allowed him to learn and predict a Jedi's battle style as they fought him, but by the same token, the Jedi learned what he was like, how he acted, and how to manufacture scenarios that remove his advantages. For example, Kenobi's famous 'hello there' would have failed, had the Jedi not known that Grevious prefers to take down Jedi opponents personally. We also know that Grevious had trouble dealing with form masters- he couldn't beat Dooku, no matter how hard he tried, and Kenobi was a master of the defensive form (I want to say Form III, but I could be wrong). Windu gets a good force crush in on Grevious' chest. If we're counting CW, which I generally do, but I understand the argument for not doing regarding Grevious, then Kit Fisto beats him very early on, due to his mastery of Form I. When Jedi fully master a Form, as more and more of them did (because of the war, and because General Grevious was killing the ones who didn't), they not just incorporate the force into their technique, they incorporate a philosophy of the force into their technique. For Kenobi, it's wait wait wait strike. For Fisto, it was be as churning water, chaotic and unpredictable. For Windu, it was speed, power, precision. Presumably, Dooku would have been something similar to Kenobi and Windu- a solid, disciplined defense, a knack for multitasking, and an awareness of weakness. It's possible to see where prediction would fail against a blank wall of defense- the first strike is the last strike, so how can you predict when and where it will fall?* It failed against Fisto's unpredictability. It failed against Dooku's measured exactness, where there really isn't any place to gather data about weakness. *Yes I know he killed him with a blaster, but at the same time, if the blaster hadn't been there, he would have just done the next thing, and the next thing, until he _did_ find a way to kill Grevious.

@@MarkusAldawn The problem is that it's not what went wrong. In Legends Grievous had no problem killing Jedi even as the war progressed and couldn't be taken down by anyone less than Yoda, Windu or Kenobi. In Canon he has suffered humiliating defeats at the hands of opponents way below master level even early in the war, but later we see him actually besting Obi Wan on occasions and easily going toe to toe with Maul. So "He became too known" is not the explanation.

I think the most poetic thing was how similar this Grievous was to the introduction of Darth Vader as an unstoppable force. Just like when you only hear the breath of Vader "hooper hooper", Grievous' mechanical parts creaking in the shadows give you that "he's coming for me" feel which the Clone Wars series missed out on. Grievous was always meant to be the proto-Darth Vader, more machine than man and fearless in his pursuit of killing anyone in his way. Sad he became a joke in the 3-D version.

@@SpectacularSpidey670 So glad you asked. I mean that. Well the idea first slipped in my head with the Newsreel narrator at the start of every episode, reminiscent of old WWII propaganda. In Clone Wars Separatists are portrayed as either craven or cartoonishly stupid. General Grievous comes to mind. Genndy's Grievous was fucking terrifying. It gave me nightmares as a kid, as he picked Jedi apart with his *foot talons*. He was a lakonic, multi limbed assassin. It was shown in another short that Mace Windu crushed his chest but it doesn't explain how he turned into basically a synthed Snidely Whiplash. And the Jedi. In Clone Wars they're humanized, and win the day with lightsaber skill and clever tricks. Genndy got closer to what the Jedi would be like if you weren't force sensitive: Eldritch horror pyrotechnic wizards. An invisible means of disassembling droids only Coruscant sorcerers can use. If I saw Mace Windu crunch a sand crawler or Anakin turn a Skakoan into a tube of toothpaste, I would be glad they're on my side and want them off my planet. Anakin's temper flares in Clone Wars only under 'justifiable' conditions. In the shorts Asajj insults him and he promptly bludgeons her to death with a lightsaber.
