Great video. The only point I'd have like to be clarified is that while most Italian immigrants to North America were from South Italy, most Italians who moved to South America were from the North of Italy. There are even linguistic pockets in South America with versions of some Northern languages (eg Piedmontese). It is also important to note that dialects differ greatly not just between each other but also in their own area, as someone from my town and someone from Naples would sound quite different, despite using a similar registry and the same grammar (as we also speak a version of the Neapolitan language). Also, fun fact, there are super small linguistic pockets of foreign languages in several parts of Italy, like Catalan in Alghero, Francoprovencal in the North East of Italy and in two towns in Apulia, old versions of Greek and Albanian scattered throughout some Southern regions, and more.

Southern italy does not have higher crimes rate than northen Italy, arguably they are lower, Naples for example is the 7th city in Italy for crimes rate to number of people even if it's the 3rd largest city and the one with higher density and it's so high mainly because of economic related crimes, thing correlated to the mafia that in italy in general it's like the Yakuza by various decades, it doesn't kill anymore

Important to recall the regional divides you mention make Italian-American descendants praising Italian nationalism very ironic. My Grandma's parents were said to have REFUSED to call themselves Italian. They were American first and Marshe second. Sounds like their parents may have hated Geribaldi too.

It was not really about geography, but about foreing powers meddling between themselves and trying to size the richness of Italy. After the Ostrogoths were defeated, the last true kingdom of Italy until 1861, and the ephemeral Byzantine occupation, the Lombards took over, but the endless fight with the Byzantines all across Italy and the Franks (often paid by the formers) made impossible to size the Gothic territory with secure borders. The Papacy played the Franks, and was able to retain power over it's territory until 1856, with Rome only falling in 1870. All across the middle age, the history of Italy was meddled by the HRE and France, with sudden raids and disruptions of the local authority in the north. In the south, with the Papacy acting as a Barrier between the two Italies, the Spanish and the French were fighting up and down the 2 Siciliies kingdon, after the Pope was able to wrestle it out of control of the Norman Heirs. As Manfred died, there was no more rulers coming from an Italian dynasty. Even in the XIX Napoleon III was still playing his game with Franz Joseph, gouging good chunks of Savoy in exchange for promises of help he was never willing to fully fulfil. After the battle of Custoza, Napoleon signed a peace treaty with Austria without even consulting the Savoy ally Despite keeping for France Nice and the Savoy. He also proceeded to block the Unification of Italy up to 1970 when he was kicked out by Bismark, showing how he never cared for Italy at all. In the end geography was not a real factor, as it was not during the Gothic rulership. the inability to Get Rome under the Kingdom proved to be the real Political problem, both in 756 AD as in 1870.

A very informative and well reseched video. One thing that I wanted to add is that modern italian was actually "invented" by one our greatest minds Alessando Manzoni. He recived the offical job to make the new italian from the government, and it's thanks to it's masterpice "I promessi sposi" (Bride and Groom to be) that the language started to spread. This book tells the tail of Renzo and Lucia, 2 young lovers that want to get married. But at just hours from the wedding they discover that the local lord, Don Rodrigo, wants Lucia for himself. This forces the two of them apart and it's only after two long years, in which they survived many missadventures, than they are finaly able to get married. It's considered the "The peopole's novel" since it was writen to appeal to every layer of society.

Bro the fact that south Italy is poorer doesn't mean it's more dangerous. I have grown up in the poorest region of Italy, Calabria, and then moved to Milan to study and I feel WAAAY safer in Calabria, mostly because there is almost no illegal immigration (since there is no jobs even for us).

As for why Italy crumbled into separate states for so long, we have the Eastern Romans, Ostrogoths and Lombards to thank for that.

You should have shown how the Italian peninsula was divided _before_ the Romans took over. A determining reason as to why Italy was unified was her (sort of) common language and her unique geography.

The Italian Peninsula was first ruled by a kingdom, then a republic, next and empire, the empire fell, divided for a over millennia, then reunited under a kingdom, fascists came and went, and now a republic… I think I’m starting to see a cycle forming…

6:47 Not quite. Italy was already a nation (= a group of people speaking the same/similar language, with common history, religion, traditions, etc.). But it wasn't a country (= a unified political entity). So it should go like: "the idea that Italy should be a country".

The US education curriculum typically groups the German and Italian unifications together as almost natural consequences of the rise of nationalism and industrialization. I think the argument makes some sense in regards to Germany, who always maintained some basis for a common national identity. The unification of Italy, on the other hand, seems far less retrospectively obvious to me since Italy was far more diverse culturally and linguistically and doesn't seem to have had any clear basis for a national identity outside of their loosely shared Roman history.
