How Globalization Stifles Ghana's Industries

The Trade Trap (2003): Ghana's markets are flooded with subsidised American maize. Farmers are being priced out of their own markets. While the EU is removing some quotas and tariffs, its list of stringent requirements makes it virtually impossible for Ghanaians to export their goods.

It’s the mantra of the globalization lobby - from the IMF, World Bank and G7 group of richest nations to the American far-right lobbyists who dislike the whole concept of multilateral agreements - that trade is now the way for poor countries to work their way out of poverty. All they’ve got to do is to open their markets to other people’s goods too, deregulate, and ensure openness and good ‘governance’ - and then they, too, can join the rich man’s club. But anti-globalization protesters from Seattle to Genoa have argued that trade isn’t actually working for the poorest of the poor - the one billion people round the world who live on less than a dollar a day. They say the rules are rigged in the rich world’s favour - by subsidies to sectors like farming or construction where the poor can most easily compete, by stacks of regulations supposedly about hygiene and and labour standards that are really intended to keep the poor countries’ goods out, and by shameless penalties on countries like Ghana that try to manufacture goods from their own raw materials.

Augustine is a shining light for Ghana to push forward towards a fairer trade with the EU.markets. Keep up your good work Augustine! At the same time look for other markets to the Middle East and Asia. There are more people and more consumers there. Cheers ! 🇨🇳💕💖🎉🇨🇳

So sad. My motherland is shrinking and leadership is doing little because they are involved in this massive importation

When you have leaders who don’t love their own country and people, this is what happens.. leaders are suppose to well for their people not themselves

We need to stop always putting the blame on others, EU is only doing what’s good for their ppl by flooding ur markets with their goods and not importing yours. Try working with other markets like Asia South America and Middle East. Also our governments have to subsidize or provide the labs and facilities

Ghana must subsidise the preis of her Agricultural products in imported agricultural products. The EU subsidizes all their Agricultural products and exercises tariffs and some other tactics to close their doors to agricultural products from Africa. They will continue to tantalize Africans and in the last minute frustrate the African Economy in these fields. We need to encourage trade within the AfcAFTA and put no hope at all in the EU and the West. Trade is everything and it is never their intention to trade with Africa. You we must stop being naive when it becomes to trade with these guys. They use lies and tricks to engage with us.

Stop excuses for what you don't have. You want to trade with each, start manufacturing something first, so that you can sell these to each other. You have the most fertile land but can't even produce enough food to feed yourself. Don't blame others for what you yourself cannot achieve. It is only in South Africa that any decent scale of manufacturing and agriculture takes place. FACT.

So long as you use foreign fertiliser you will not be able to sell but if you will used what is on the ground your cost will be low and you will be able to sell because home made fertiliser is cheap and good for the product

It's still unfortunate that Africa is still under neo-colonialism and this still keeps us under our former colonial masters' feet.

I think African countries must trade amongst themselves and stop patting the knees of these colonisers .it seems to be senseless for Ghana to import maize from United states when they have maize within the country

Interesting perspective. Here, next door in Burkina Faso the country is one of the poorest countries in the world. Little to no development, international investments or security. I guess globalization isn't so bad after all? Night and day.

Europeans and Americans are trying to export to Africa due to the lack of local production throughout Africa. So why the hell are we trying to trade to Europe when the major market is here in Africa?
@anthonymaina2215
@anthonymaina2215 Год назад
Come on! Distorting prices through subsidies is not a social problem! Ok tell us, why does IMF insist on African countries cutting subsidies for their various industries if it’s a social problem? In the 90s you introduced SAP’s. No wonder China is making strides in Africa.

Judging by the then world bank president in the video, this video dates back like more than 20 years. It's not a true reflection of the current state of the country. Update: Per the info in the description box, this video dates back to 2003.
