How Good Is Carlos Alcaraz, Really?...
Carlos Alcaraz Garfia is a wonderkid born in Murcia, Spain in 2003. His father, Carlos was a tennis academy director at Real Sociedad Club de Campo de Murcia and was once ranked in Spain's top 40, so it was only kinda natural that Alcaraz would take a liking to the sport.
At the age of 4, Alcaraz was already playing tennis. He grew up looking up to his idols, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. By 2018, he had joined the academy of a former world number one - Juan Carlos Ferrero. It would be the start of a beautiful partnership. But just before we talk about how far this partnership has gotten Alcaraz, let's go over some predictions from legends and fellow players on Alcaraz.

Alcaraz is the complete package. He has powerful forehand, backhand, and serve like Novak, good at net game and dropshots like Roger, and has the strong physicality and fighting spirit of Nadal. I wouldn't be surprised if he is the replacement of the Big 3 after they gone and dominate tennis in the next decade

Carlos is surely the next big thing in tennis. He has everything. His forehand is lethal his defence is incredible his speed is fantastic and also his attack. He has variety with top spin,flat power on his forehand and also in his backhand. He is physically fit and injury free so far and he his a fantastic fighter. His serve can improve but it is already improving. His backhand also can improve but it's still a great shot. He has a great game at the net and he is very focused. Considering that medical threatments improve every year and in every generation he has some chanches to have the same longevity or even more than the Big three. He also doesn't have any future opponent that will be to his level like each of the bif 3 had. Yes there are some great players like Ruud,Sinner,Tiafoe,Medvedev,Zverev ecc. But none of them is as good as him especially considering that he is the youngest of them all and he has the highest potential. He needs to improve his decision making. On grass he isn't a top player at the moment but he ahs the weapons to become a top player also on that surface. He still hasn't played a lot on grass (he played only 6 matches) and he already reached a wimbledon r16. He has some great chances to become the holder of every record or nearly and to still improve a lot. I think he will hit the double digit in terms of grand slam and m1000. He can be competitive in every surface. Sk he has everything. He surely his the next big thing in tennis.

I think Sinner will win less grand slams but I could see him having a good h2h against Alcatraz in the future; he seems to have a pretty good matchup (game-wise) against him, kind of like Fedal with Nadal vs Fed in the 2000’s.

Federer is 5 years older than Nadal and 6 than Djokovic. Maybe Carlitos' rivals are 14 and 13 now. In fact there is a growing hype in the Spain tennis circles about a boy by the name of Landaluce, a new 16 yo wonderkid. I'm sure there are many others aroud the world and maybe one, two or three of them wil become tennis stars soon.

He is the best player right now and the most exciting to watch. He can come back and win after being down in a match badly just like the big 3 are. He is incredibly physical and goes for every shot and I think the only worry for him would be injuries which is the worst thing in tennis.

I don't think Jannik will keep up with Carlos. He's almost 2 years older than Carlos, hasn't improved much this year (still just no.12 in ATP live race) won just one meager 250 title against an injured Carlos in Umag this year. And he is very injury prone given his fragile body. To be honest, I think Sinner is way overrated and can't live up to the hype.

Agreed, he's still so young and will lose one or the other match... but his level is already higher than Fed's or Djokovic's at his age and he's so much room left for improvement. If nobody is going to challenge him, and I see nobody from the young guns that could do this (no not Sinner, he's so much overrated imo), he's going to break a lot of records.

He is otherworldly at the moment, but talking about big 3 GS records are different galaxy altogether. As insane Novak's 2011 was, people laughed when his parents were talking about Novak will topple Federer and Nadal, dismissing the whole idea. In defending it, people simply said they meant topple federer and nadal from the top, not overtaking their GS counts. Mind you, back then Nadal and Federer was "only" at 9 and 16 GS. Overtaking big 3 shouldn't be the burden we place on Carlos, we can probably come back to that conversation once Alcaraz won around 12 GS.

We can say Carlos is the more complete player already than the Big 3 were at his age, he already won far more titles than Federer and Djokovic did at his age, and he broke some impressive records as the youngest player ever. Roger Federer was 21 (not 20) when he won his first GS title at Wimbledon in 2003, and a few weeks later he turned 22. The Swiss player enjoyed a phenomenal run for a few years, racking up big titles at a rate of two or three every year from 2004 to 2007, until Nadal and Djokovic stepped up, especially in 2008. It's hard to predict how successful Alcaraz will be or if other young players will step up the way he has. And of course we must not forget Daniil Medvedev, who already knows what it is to win a slam.

With the impending retirement of both Nadal and Djokovic, there is definitely an opening there for Carlos to win a lot of Grand Slams over the next 10 years. Provided he remains fit of course. Winning his first Grand Slam will give him tremendous belief in his ability and that is something the other guys seem to lack. Tennis is such a mental game at that level and many great players have been beaten before they even step onto the court through a lack of belief that they can actually win a Major. Medvedev is about the only other player right now who I think actually believes he can compete at a higher enough level to win every tournament he enters. Having a major win this early in his career will definitely help Alcaraz in believing he has the ability to perform well when under pressure and give him confidence going into every match he plays. Will be interesting to see where his journey leads.

I have no words to describe his game. He plays similar to Federer and sometimes Djokovic but he is not Federer. His turning defense to offense in a flash is like Nadal but he is not Nadal. He is a combination of all three and while more physical than Federer has the same heady combination of power and touch (drop shots almost as good or better). He definitely has scope for improvement on his serve placement and sustained focus but he can do it. The bottomline, he is as close to perfection a 19 year old can be, and he can improve even more. That's the scary part. Once he starts serving bombs AND hits his spots, game over. There will be no escape from Alcaraz (Arabic word Alcarrah: cherry tree)

He is a attacking, aggressive player like Roger but i think he is even more aggressive than Roger at the net at the same age and his drop shots are just as good, but his movement is much more physical, including defense. Definitely fast like Nadal and flexible like Djokovic (almost for both)

Absolutely agree with the video. But people don’t sleep on Sinner. So far he’s shown more than once that he can dominate Alcaraz. This is going to be the next big Rivalry. Also Zverev is going to be a huge contender when he gets back from his injury. Alcatraz said in an Interview after their RG matchup that he doesn’t have the tools yet to beat him in a grand slam. If he doesn't improve his serve speed and first serve percentage, and if he doesn't start hitting more flat shots, I believe he wont win many slams. This is my educated opinion. If he does work on those aspects and improves, then yes, he will be a GOAT.

Alcaraz is great but he is nowhere as good as the big three have been these past 20 years. He has beaten them recently yes but they are about 40 years old now and it shows how good these guys have been earlier that they still are winning titles and majors. So of course he is going to dominate the next years or so and let's hope he stays healthy because we need someone to come in and keep the levels of the sport really good. Zverev, Medvedev, Ruud and the others need someone to make them develop further as the big three had in order to win majors, they always knew they would have to beat one of the other two and that was almost impossible. That is the level that has been needed in the past.

Staying healthy, some real long term competition of a class that will be better than himself, from not just one but two other players. And last but not least all other random things that might stop him from reaching athletic and tennis specific qualities that the big three achieved. They had an unpresidented run in the game of tennis that might not ever be repeated. I am happy for Alcatraz successes but he can’t be compared on the same day with any of the big three until he reaches 10-15 slams 800 matches or more and so on. Djokovic might still beat Nadal in numbers of slams but we don know for sure until he stops playing officially. He is still that good. Nadal might still have a last word to say on a tennis court. Alcatraz is still wet behind everything and is an amazing tennis player just ranked number one. Long live the king!!!

Alcaraz today at 19 is nowhere near at his peak, wait what he will be able to do when he is 22, 23, like Federer at his prime. But I agree, it would of course be very interesting to watch them play each other at their prime.

Agree with everyone here, he has literally every shot and every mental quality you would want from a player. His only "weakness" right now is his serve, which is "just" average. So, not really a weakness, but probably the area of his game most likely to improve. Thinking about his comparables, he's like a rich man's version of Rublev. Insane forehand power, above average backhand, and an ultra aggressive style. What set's him apart though is his net transition. He's just so quick to finish points off at the net and his volley game is just otherworldly. Maybe a top five volleyer in the game right now. Then, he has an absolutely lethal drop shot. He's not content to just smash forehand winners. He uses his massive power to set up the short game where his speed has a huge advantage. Rublev doesn't do this much either. Of course, the third thing he has over Rublev is his defense. Elite change of direction ability and elite difficult shot making ability put so much pressure on opponents to finish the point, which leads to a lot of errors or tentativeness from opponents.

The only tricky thing about Alcaraz seems to be.... how do we pronounce Alcaraz? I think Americans tend to stress the first syllable: AL-ca-raz. In Spanish it is stressed on the LAST syllable: al-ca-RAZ, and now Tennis Plus stress it on the middle syllable 😀 al-CA-raz But yes, it should be alcaRAZ. By the way, he calls himself Charly or Carlitos. He doesn't like being called Carlos. Weird, but that's the way it is.

That doesnt mean disrespect to the way he says his last name lol. Spanish is huge, it's spoken by more than 500 million people. Differences of pronunciation is just natural. In english you can say alcarás or alcaráth, both are equally right

Btw, I usually hear Latinamericans trying to emulate the English pronounciation, wich is not "natural" to them, when naming people that have English surnames. Why they don't tray the same in this case? Well, they can do whatever they want to since it his his mother tongue too (it would be nice that they adapt to the Alcaraz's pronounciation, nevertheless), but anglosaxon people should adapt to what Alcaraz himself considers it is his name, his identity, the same as they try to do with Auger-Alliassime, for instance, whose name try to pronounce as "Frenchy" as they can.

The thing about number really isn't that interesting because i am pretty sure the big 3 needed like 15000 points to reach no 1 instead of 6000. He is amazing rn, but we can't say much about his consistency and how long he can stay at the top for. Nevertheless I am excited for the Sinner and Alcaraz rivalry.

@@mireafelder8194 yes but we can agree it definitely increased the odds of another player becoming #1 by a lot. The long time #1 couldn't earn pts in 3 majors as well as 2 or 3 master1000 events. And how deep did Carlos go in the other slams btw? Good for carlos for beating out the rest for #1, but he only has 6740 pts. That's obsurdly low for a #1. A slam title and two master1000 titles. Nadal at 19yrs had a slam and 4 or 5 master1000 titles, which only got him #2. Just highlighting the facts.

If he keeps improving at the rate he has in the last year he could stop Novak from overtaking Nadal because I think Rafa may win the French and Novak to win Wimbledon and Australia,The US Open seems the most difficult because the big 3 it 12 times between them which is considerably less than how many times they've won the rest.So Carlos could be the guy to stop Novak from getting to 24 which I think he will need.

Can still happen ... when Federer dominated, few thought anyone else will come close to his records. Apart of Nadal that gave him trouble early, no one was thinking, up until 2007, that there would be 2 more greats that would challenge him. But still early days for Alcaraz. He plays well but there are good players out there that are pushing him to 5 sets as we saw at the USO. It's not sustainable to keep winning like that.

Sorry to say this. Alcaraz will suffer a lot of injuries in his career. He tries to hit the ball too hard,this will lead to a lot of injuries. He has had a great start to his career but it won't be as great as we imagine. He will suffer a lot of tough,heartbreaking defeats in the next few years. I don't see him getting up from those. Anyways,let's see.
