Funny that you pointed out how well maintained Elizabeth's nails were because Keira Knightly admitted in the film's commentary that she went out and got a manicure when they told her not too 😂 They knew it wasn't realistic and she was like 'lol nah imma do it anyway'
To lift the curse, they needed the blood of the whole crew. The rest of the crew had already given theirs as they returned the gold, and Bootstraps was the one left they needed (or Will’s blood) to lifts the curse.
@@f.earless. I think during the day they still bleed when they’re hurt, but not at night when the curse is active, for example when they step in the moonlight?
@@egygizdaIn the standoff in the cave, Jack cuts his hand on his coin, and throws it to Will. Will drops both coins into the chest, alongside both of their blood.
If I had a nickel for every time Dylan has re-named a monkey in a movie to Travis, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
This movie is actually outrageously good though, like it’s the kind of movie your meant to think of as a guilty pleasure and just a kids movie, but it’s an actual masterpiece, everything about it. From the characters to the costumes to the soundtrack to Kiera knightly to dialogue to the setting to the plot to the hidden meanings and morals ect. ect. It’s incredible.
Right? I also saw a video by Stephan Krosecz here on youtube called "Accidentally Genius" about this movie. It sheds so much light on how much nuance and brilliance this movie has. Highly recommend giving it a watch.
This WAS definitely peak attractiveness for all the main cast. An almost scary amount of pretty filling the screen considering it's a gritty-goofy pirate romp. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!
The fact that Dylan says he was born in 2002 when we all know he’s 30 is the best subtle joke I’ve ever heard. Especially since it ties in to the fact that he constantly says he’s bad at math. This joke has layers which ties in to his Shrek video. Mind blown
This movie was my awakening of bisexual panic purely due to Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. The writers knew what they were doing because I refuse to believe that they did not suffer the same panic. It is simply not possible they are too attractive even for straight people, you can’t only be attracted to one I simply refuse
Im a straight girl and.. Not attracted by any. Keira is really pretty but appreciating it doesnt make it attraction, and Orlando is not my type at all, but he is not ugly obviously I guess im a white bread then :(
@@youtubewontletme Orlando never did it for me either. Doesn't mean he aint handsome, dude def is hot as any. But being hot alone is not enough for me or it really has to be a certain type.
No one ever mentions how bootstrap was both cursed by the Aztec gold and a member of the Dutchmen later. He seems to go through the crew transformation faster than ANYONE, and personally I think that's why.
Dylan constantly acknowledging how good looking both Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are in this movie is just to relatable. This movie was my Bisexual awakening
I have developed a soft spot for James as I’ve grown up watching these movies cause he’s honestly such a good guy- putting aside the age difference thing- but he’s such a respectful, kind, and sweet man and if it weren’t for Will’s existence I think he would have been a good man for Elizabeth, he’s just a little boring since he’s so proper.
I watched POTC after watching tons of Jack Davenport in the show Coupling. His character was in that show was hilarious, so I was predisposed to favor his character in POTC. I was so glad they didn’t make him a total villain!😂
Would really love Dylan to watch “The road to El Dorado” it’s an animation but this was definitely made for adults 😂!! the humour is excellent and very underrated!
The fact that Keira Knightley was literally EIGHTEEN when they started filming will ALWAYS blow my mind. It’s so crazy that these films have aged so beautifully and they’ll always be some of my favorites :)
she was 17 when they started filming but turned 18 on set. on the dvd special features lee arenberg did a video diary and filmed the moment when they brought her cake out.
Dylan, thank you SO MUCH for mentioning the SOUND EFFECTS! Sound designers get next to no credit for most movies because people just take it as a given.
Barbosa's last line of the movie kills me though because they've all become so depressed hanging in between death and life they don't feel anything anymore so he gets shot and says, "I feel...cold" with a smile on his face like he's happy to feel anything at all hsefhksh this movie is so unexpectedly good for just being based off of a disney ride it's crazy. edit: bro i got more to say actually, the consistency I just remembered when he comes back in a future movie he's eating an apple with a smile like that's such a small call back to this movie but clearly meant so much to his character why is the writing so GOOD??
This movie is better than it had any right to be considering it's just based on a lazy river ride. The music, the writing, the action, the cinematography it just oh CHEF'S KISS. And then the sequel actually does what a sequel SHOULD and BUILDS on that first movie. And for a movie that came out in 2006 the fact that Davy Jones looks AS GOOD AS HE DOES even now... Incredible.
the first 3 pirates movies are such a great trilogy. The first one is a masterpiece. The second one builds on the story and adds a great new villain. The third is an epic conclusion to it all and has one of the best act 3 battles I've ever seen.
Barbossa said that the curse applies only to those who stole the coin from the chest, Elizabeth didn’t steal it from the chest, she took it from Will who also didn’t take it from the chest, however Jack and the rest of the crew took it directly from the chest so the curse only applied to them. He also said the blood needs to be repaid, I assume the rest of the crew also gave their blood when they returned the coin, only Bootstrap’s (Will’s by proxy) and Jack’s blood was missing
The coins themselves aren't cursed. It is the act of taking them, hence why Jack was cursed and not Elizabeth or Will. It's also interesting to think about how Bootstrap Bill has been immortally drowning for the past 10 years until the curse was finally lifted and Davy Jones abducted him onto the Flying Dutchman for even more eternal suffering :)
The fact that I was attracted to all 3 main characters when I first watched the film (at least first 3 films) should have been some kind of a sign early on
don't know if you'll watch the rest, but i think the third movie you would REALLY love: - great cinematography - the prettiest everyone has ever been - the SCORE - the plot and the fight scenes and the story behind everything - THE CINEMATOGRAPHY it's truly a stunning movie just a recommendation
The first film was genuinely so well made, they knew Pirate films had always been flops before this so they put so much effort into it, an ICONIC character introduction for Jack Sparrow and the right amount of fantasy, action that tells the story such as Will's fighting style vs Jack's, comedy and so on, perfectly paced, THE MUSIC... Keira Knightly.... what's not to like?
I also think the authentic feel was amazing between the costumes and props and makeup and especially the dialogue. They didn’t dumb it down for the audience but used what at least seems like “piratey talk” and language common to that era.
The first 3 films were soooo good, they are so well done I cannot even pick my favourite of the 3, but all are done so so well and I love the gradual transition in sadness and loss and seriousness from the first to the 3rd film. The 4th is okay, the romance thing between Jack and Anjelica is keeping the plot very interesting and fun to watch. The 5th one was honeslty kinda boring to me.. They stopped really caring about the quality of the movie, but just about "Yeah, it's already famous, let's just mass produce it". Even the Sparrow's lines became boring. They somehow made him into a boring character which is honestly disappointing but not surprising knowing Disney.
And something I noticed in this commentary was how excellent all of the setpieces were. Every fight scene was incredibly unique, none were simply people smashing swords together. Great film.
i honestly like how cartoonish these movies can get with the action scenes. nowadays everything has to be so realistic, it needs to be believable and logucal. i kinda miss this kind of movie that can be serious but goofy and a little cartoonish at the same time.
Not sure what action movies you've been watching that "have to be so realistic, believable, and logical." The majority are still cartoonish. The entire MCU, the Fast and Furious movies, Uncharted, Jurassic World, Jungle Cruise, etc.
@@amityislandchum i think they meant something like this: take the MCU, those movies are goofy and cartoonish in concept but they take themselves WAYY too seriously in their fights (outside of pretty lackluster one-liners). Pirates embraces its goofy moments by being over the top and ridiculous about them since the concept for a good fight is better than the logical aspect of it MCU fights only serve to move the plot forward, not to have fun. MCU movies as a whole ignore their silly origins most of the time and just focus on making them look mpre mature Uuhhhhhh yeah if that makes any sense lmao
@@amityislandchum The feeling that I get, is that this movie knows its there to just have fun. I was on the original Pirates ride in Disneyland a lot as a kid, and the scenes of people being chased by pirates or shot at by them was still cartoonish in its sense of humor even if it was a rather dark concept. Unlike a lot of the modern big blockbuster films, this movie's action scenes have a definite style of "playing pirates". It rings more of the 80s action scenes that despite being dangerous situations, just make me smile and have a good time. Most modern hollywood action films go for making me cringe or think about how bad a hit hurt. Both can be good, depending on what you want you audience to feel. I will give MCU a couple points to humor in a few of their fights, but because they're so CGI oriented they tend to be more about spectacle of powers and such rather than fun flavor. Its not bad to make the audience wince during fights, but we do seem to have a lot more of the gritty types of action scenes, and are seriously lacking in humorous fight choreography (think of the clever humor of Jackie Chan) as of the last decade.
All I’m saying is if you did a commentary on the entire franchise that would be the most entertaining thing ever! But under no circumstances is this a recommendation 😉
Dylan in this commentary: Did you hear that kid, you have to be a psychopath not to feel anything when that kid cried. Dylan in literally every other video: *Kill the child*
I love how much Dylan appreciates the sword fighting scene with Will and Jack at the beginning. That scene is a whole category onto itself in mixing amazing cinematography, choreography, and score together into something outstanding and extraordinary.
It also establishes multiple character and plot elements, something only the best action scenes can do. Establishes that both Will and Jack are skilled swordfighters, Will because he wants to impress Elizabeth. Sets up Jack's pistol being important to him, and the mystery of who the bullet is for. Once again shows Will's master being given the credit for Will's work, which will be paid off later. Will throws a sword to stop Jack escaping, in the last scene Will throws a sword to stop Jack from being hanged and help him escape. There's probably more that I'm missing.
@@ForeverTraitor Absolutely, 100,%. Also some great character development as well, where some of their personality and thought processes are established too.
not only are we grateful for your uploading consistency, but we would also like to thank you for finishing and releasing that book in the shortest time ever AND going shopping. truly, thank you.
@@katrinabjorgan5516 that is the joke- there is no book cause he never released it cause he never finished it even though he says he’s almost done with it.
11:43 "you need a crew like a minimum of 10 men" I honestly can't tell if this is a One Piece joke. You need: 1: A capitan, 2: First mate, 3: Storyteller, 4: Chef, 5: Navigator, 6: Doctor, 7: Historian, 8 Shipwright, 9: Musician, 10: Helmsman
Dylan if you haven’t watched the behind the scenes videos documenting the making of these movies, I suggest you do (not for RU-vid, just for you) as they were filmed on location and used practical effects as much as possible. It’s a really interesting watch!
Dylan gaslighting us into thinking it's Monday whenever he uploads will never stop being my favorite 😅 Edit: im glad im not the only one who falls for it🤣🤣🤣
It's 3.17am, finished uni, summer holiday has started, eating a lolly pop, some fruits shoot and having a rewatch binge of Dylan. Overlooking being back at the house that makes me want to....life is a vibe rn.
Hi Dylan, in case you're still wondering, they needed William Turner's blood to reverse the curse because they needed the blood of every crewmember that took the treasure when returning every single coin and they did so, with one coin unaccounted for (the one Elizabeth had that she took from Will when she saved him) and his blood, but since they couldn't find him anymore and when they got the coin they thought they came across his child (cuz ofc, she had his coin, saw the ship and her last name was Turner) they figured it would be much easier to use her blood than finding Will.
The reason Jack got cursed and Elizabeth didn’t is that Jack took the coins from the chest. Elizabeth just “found” the coin on Will. I think the act of taking them from the chest specifically is what curses you.
This was the first video I saw and it absolutely got me. Now after two weeks I've watched Dylan's entire channel, lots of fun, I just love his content. 😂💯
I can’t deal with how badly I want to watch this movie now. I remember mildly enjoying it when it came out, I was 9 though so it wasn’t HUGE to me. But between appreciating stuff like this with age, being shocked at the detail put into it, and my recent obsession with Our Flag Means Death I think the time is right for a rewatch.
25:20 they needed Bill's blood (Will's blood) because Bill had stolen a coin from the chest. Barbossa and his crew had already given back their blood but the curse didn't lift because they needed everyone's blood. Since Bill left the crew after they abandoned Jack on an island he wasn't with them to lift the curse and give them/the chest his blood (with left I mean was thrown into the ocean). They weren't able to find him cuz he joined Jones's crew. I hope that helped!
bill never left the crew he was basically tide up and tossed overboard only joining jones crew basically under duress cause it was join the crew or die lol
I love how Dylan’s like “why’s everyone so attractive in this movie” when this movie was used in Heartstopper to help show one character’s bisexuality 😭🤣😭
I was legit thinking "Dylan hasn't watched a movie that actually gives him joy" and I am only 7 mins in and I love how happy Dylan is right now! Adorable!
The scene in Heartstopper where Nick watches this movie and then googles “bisexuality” is honestly the best choice they could have made because everyone in this is beautiful
One thing I love when re-watching Dylan's videos is when I find things I didn't notice before, like I didn't notice that he was wearing a new shirt when he was talking about audible 😊
And if he heard anyone ask their servants to fetch anything besides butter, he could be like: "I can't believe it's not butter!" (Not sorry for aging myself with that joke.)
I read a post (on Tumblr I believe) that said that Norrington is a hero/romantic lead, but he’s in the wrong story. Norrington would make a FANTASTIC male lead in a Jane Austen-esque book/movie. He’s handsome, well-spoken, good, kind to others, high ranking in the military. If this was a Jane Austen book, Elizabeth would ADORE him. But alas, this is a ghost/pirate fantasy story, so he gets screwed over because in this genre good guys are bad guys.
dylan is notorious for two things. 1) making me hit the like button before the 30-second mark on every single video 2) consistently uploading videos every single monday for movie commentary monday
Pirates of the Caribbean is just about as perfect adventure movie as you can get. Honestly Johnny should've won best actor that year (he was up for it), it's been said a million times but it bears repeating, he makes this movie. One of the best and most likeable characters ever put to film.
Do you think it was Dylan’s fantastic Jack Sparrow impression that caused his college to go “right that’s it, we won’t get any better than this dude right here” and closed up for good?
I hyperfixated on this movie so hard as a child, I had so much Pirates merchandise, I even had a Pirates themed birthday party and it was just a bunch of 11 year old girls dressed as pirates with fake moustaches and beards running around. It was great.
This movie franchise as well as Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones where my hyper-fixations as a kid, and honestly I still love them. I dressed up as Jack Sparrow in prep(?) but I got in trouble because the sword talked for some reason and wouldn’t stfu 😭😂
Dylan appreciating both Keira and Orlando's attractiveness throughout this movie has me living. Who says we can't appreciate attractive people regardless of our sexuality??? Yahssss
@@realdavidjones1623 This is the comment section of a commentary video. This is literally the place to bring things like that up and it was a very real part of the commentary. Dylan expressed a significant amount of times how attractive he found them both. He isn't concerned about perceptions or assumptions. You on the other hand appear very insecure.
I always remember the quote when they say do you think he plans this stuff out or just makes it up as he goes. And I believe it’s 50/50 he plans what he did but it doesn’t always go as he planned but still works out bc he’s captain jack sparrow
I saw this movie in theaters at 5 years old when it opened with my mom and brother (who was 13). I just remember how freaking terrifying this movie was to me then and was one of the reasons I had lots of nightmares about zombies lol especially vivid dreams including that crying baby, the guy looking through the crack of the closet, and of course the zombies walking through the water. I think my mom took me out of the theater multiple times. Love the movie now though!
Thank you for being the only reactor to be creeped out by Norrington watching Elizabeth grow up and then wanting to marry her! Everybody else either leaves it out or doesn’t notice.
potc is one of the best franchises i’ve ever watched, especially the original trilogy. the filmography, costumes, acting, plot line, script etc is impeccable. curse of the black pearl is one of my favourite films; i don’t think i’ll ever get tired of watching it. keira, orlando and johnny are such an amazing trio
So you’re telling me…that one “that looks like a man who just won a lawsuit” line is what people wanted to cancel you over?!?!?!?! People can’t be serious
this was a top-notch commentry dylan, i was laughing throughout the whole thing. you're so right about the vibes in this movie just making the leads so attractive. it sucks that the working environment wasn't the best bc it really is such a fun film.
Is this about Disney not providing the cast and crew life jackets while they filmed the movie and Depp giving everyone life jackets from his own money?
Why people comment here about the beauty of Keira and Orlando, but not about Johnny? Even dressed as a pirate, with golden teeth, dreads and dirty hands, I would choose him every day, haha!
Dylan being turned on by sound effects is so funny, and him not giving a shit if there's people in his house or not just took the cake for me And funnily enough...I relate to all of it lol 🤣
Everyone who stole the gold needs to give their blood to remove the curse, thats why they need Will's blood, because his father was part of the crew that removed the coins from the chest.
Caribbean was always pronounced like Kiera said it. Sometime in the late 80s early 90s it changed here. I still use the old prounciation. Most islanders say “ker-i-BEE-uhn,” and this is also the preferred pronunciation in most dictionaries. Like all dictionaries, the Merriam-Webster phonetically divides Caribbean into “ker-ə-bē-ən” and notes that the first recorded use was in 1772.
The thing is, they need everyone’s blood (all the pirates who stole and used the gold) to free the curse. The whole crew. William Turner father was also cursed so they needed his blood as well. The other pirates already gave their blood and gold, but they got rid of Turner and then discovered they needed his blood.
@@juliak8684 but Jack was cursed when he took the gold in the final scene, so that Barbossa couldn't kill him. Will gave his blood and the curse was broken vor everyone, including Jack (who never gave his own blood)
It's honestly so wholesome to watch Dylan gush over the more technical aspects of film like- the atmospherical elements and the sound effects and the way the movie is generally structured ? you can tell he's passionate.
Dylan is literally one of the only youtubers i laugh out loud to each time i watch his videos. I DIED laughing when that kid at the beginning screamed i just KNEW he was going to laugh and comment on it. this is one of my fav movie commentaries
He had to cut out so much cool moments yet it still was hella fun. This movie is iconic. Dylan I beg you, do the trilogy because this movies are just amazing.
The way I've always thought Barbossa's death was meant to be explained is that going in and out of moonlight basically reset their bodies when their flesh disappeared and then reappeared. Hence why Jack's injury from being stabbed by Barbosa didn't kill him.
Maybe, but I think them being cursed in general is why nothing happened. Barbossa wasn't in the moonlight when he was killed, and Jack could've been acting when he was stabbed. Plus, Barbossa wasn't affected at all when Elizabeth stabbed him before seeing all of them cursed. But, I see your point.
@@monsterhanna6691 Well, when Jack shot him, Barbossa didn't go back into the moonlight before the curse was lifted, but Jack did go back into the moonlight and back several times after being stabbed.
Can't remember where I read it, but Captain Jack walks like he's drunk on land because he's so used to being on the ocean. When he's on a ship, he walks perfectly straight. Fun fact :) Also, LOVE that Dylan wore his pirate outfit for this commentary.
