How Good Is The Vanquish 440? One Hour Of Pure Metal Detecting!

Join me on an amazing one hour relic hunt at a difficult location with Minelabs multifrequency detector.
I read a few opinions about the Vanquish and also watched some air tests on the internet. Because of it I hesitated to take it to one of my locations with (partially lots of) iron. OK, parts of this spot were clean, but other patches contained old nails etc.
I hunted sections of this slope with all my Deus coils, different frequencies, settings and also some of my other metal detectors. I wasn't really expecting to find much, especially in the "entry zone", but I was proven wrong petty quickly with my first find, a small 1930 coin. This was a huge surprise.
I was afraid to be fooled by iron, but this didn't happen (often). Maybe I was lucky to hit some targets from the right angle. When this occurred, the Vanquish was able to lock on to finds nice and stable.
One thing I've learned hunting river banks a few years ago was to go after a good signal instantly, instead of circling around in order to find an excuse for not digging it. This "rule" is still difficult to follow, but I'm trying.
So, how good is the Vanquish?
Usually I never make conclusions based on the amount, or quality of finds. Just because a detector finds a target on a given day doesn't mean that no other machine could find it as well. But, if we take all the previous activities at this place into account (plus other detectorists and their detectors), one can at least praise the Vanquish' 440 performance on that day in this soil and weather conditions.
There is one more thing - the EMI. Yes it was present, but unlike my other detectors, I could decrease the sensitivity and sometimes completely eliminate all the annoying noises (without sacrificing much depth).
Let's not forget the stability and the pleasant audio. Metal detecting is about fun. Of course it's easier to say after finding nice relics, instead of trash or nothing at all, but it really was a joy to use (from the metal detecting perspective).
Am I happy with the machine? Absolutely! Will I use it again? I hope so!

The domed coin may have been altered to be used as a button or as jewelry. It was typically done when a coin became demonetized, and silver coins were preferred with the pictorial side facing out.

This is a great machine. I've found 100's of coins, a meteorite, silver and some incredible WW2 relics with my Vanquish. I honestly don't feel the need to upgrade to any other machine.

Hello Mr. Beepers :). I think, it's a combination of both. Every time I return to this spot, I keep finding things that seemed not to be there the last time. I have a theory about worms and other forest creatures that constantly shuffle the soil, while we are at home. So maybe this is the reason, why "new" things pop out of the ground after a while. Of course a less EMI prone detector (like the Vanquish in this case) could also be a factor. On that day everything simply fit together :). Thanks for watching & Cheers!

@@MetalDetecting24 Soil moisture content and Earth's changing magnetic fields come in to play. Did you forget about the stomp technique? Next time you find an iffy target, stomp on it once or twice. If the signal degrades or moves, I have found most of those targets to be junk...if it gets stronger, it's usually something good. Still love my modded Cibola with four coils to choose from. The 9X12 DD is incredible. I so wish that I could detect along side of your amazing adventures. Like a dream for me. You've got it made!

The problem with detecting in your country is all the iron shrapnel from the different wars over the centuries. You have to guess if it's worth digging, could be junk shrapnel, or a thousand year old Roman or Viking sword 🗡️ or something historically important !! You have a great deal more history to dig through than we do in the U.S. Good luck 👍👍👍👍

Thank you John, "unfortunately" that's the case. It makes the situation difficult, but with a little bit of luck and intuition, it's possible to distinguish between good and bad (at least in some cases). I just made a hunt in a difficult area with lots of "1940's iron" and will show that you can be successful (I just have to edit it). Of course there is no guarantee and you never know what you miss, when you decide to skip a target... Have a great day.

Thank you! Unfortunately the new shoes turned out to be a disaster in steep area. I watched many reviews from people who claimed something else, that's why I made this mistake. I switched back to my old shoes with a hole in the sole and no profile at all and the difference was like night and day :(.

HI MR MD24,what a fantastic collection of finds,and the 440 performed really well{not that i know much about the vanquish} but the tones were clear and the display seems very similar to my garrett,other than the ID number display,where do i start on the finds,i'm finding it hard to pick the star as like you said some items have that personal element attached to them,also some of those stories these items could to us.think i'm going to pick the brooch as the star{or the ring,toy soldier,buckle,heller} stay safe and well my friend,have a great weekend,......HAPPY HUNTING

Hello Paul, thank you so much for your kind comment :). I was very pleased with the way the detector performed (that day, in these weather/soil conditions). The tones are pleasant for my ear and I'm full of anticipation every time a good sound appears. I only wish, the audio had more nuances, so it could be possible to distinguish between foil on the surface and something good (for example). But... it is what it is. I was also very happy with all the finds :). Each target was a surprise. Have a great day.

Thank you for your comment! I got fooled by a few shoe reviews... According to some hikers and people who spend their life walking, this is the brand to chose. I've even seen some of them hiking in snowy mountains... The shoes are light and comfortable, but only in flat terrain. As soon as it gets steeper, it gets dangerous. Not only that, the sole is slippery on hard, wet surface like rocks. I almost slipped on a flat, wet surface on my way home (in front of the train station). Internet... You simply can't trust anyone. Hello MD24, great video, great finds, I like the aluminium ring and the silver coin the most. I use the Vanquish 440 myself and am more than happy with it. By the way, how do you clean zinc coins? Wher I live I find them quite often. They are all WW2 era German pfennigs and Czech (then Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia) crowns and hellers. Usually in terrible condition and covered with white-ish spots so I usually do not bother cleaning them.

Hello, thank you for your comment. I haven't found a good method for cleaning zinc yet (I tried lye recently, but I'm sure there are better solutions). Some say, EDTA should work best (if I'm not mistaken). Problem is, the corrosion seems to progress as soon as the dirt is removed and the coin is exposed to air, so maybe it's best to wax the surface instantly after cleaning. Habe a great day.

I have a cheap bounty hunter and I'm gonna order the 440 with the pinpointer in the next day or 2. Been watching alot of videos and it seems like a good machine. I can't wait but then I'll have to wait for warm weather which is gonna be the killer!!

You would love the Equinox. The Vanquish is like it's little brother, but the iron filter isn't as good as the Nox. The Nox is a lot more stable. I grab the Vanquish/Nox 99% of the time. I only use the Deus to find those last couple of targets in the really heavy iron.

Hello Shawn, I was afraid the Equinox may be a little bit too (front) heavy for my steep areas. I also made the decision to buy the 440 instead of the 540 model mostly because of its smaller (and lighter) 10" coil. But I'm sure the Equinox would be a great choice when it comes to performance. Maybe I will have the opportunity to try it some day. Cheers!

@@MetalDetecting24 The Equinox ergonomics suck when compared to the Deus or Vanquish. It is nose heavy and the shaft sucks. If it weren't for the performance I wouldn't use it. It is a lot easier to shrink the Deus or Vanquish down when on a hill.

Do you ever have the issue of 20-30 readings turning out to be old iron items.. the metre should be 20-30s (precious metals) right? Also my pin pointer seems to say all of the soil contains metal in all directions in some areas…

Great vid Mate. I am looking to buy my first metal detector that I want to use for gold prospecting and treasure hunting. I have the opportunity to buy an X-Terra 705 for $169 or a Vanquish 440 for $349 here locally. What are your thoughts on that for a first detector? I have been advised to save more money and buy an Equinox 800, but it is considerably more expensive even second hand. Not much work lately so I am on a fairly tight budget and still considering the 440? Regards, Jas.

It's extremely hard to separate trash from good targets, but still the pros are that it works extremely well on mineralised places and it's relatively deep

That's true, I wouldn't be able to tell trash from good targets, therefore it would be hard detecting places loaded with foil (for example). Other than that, it's fun to use (it could be a little bit ergonomic as well). Cheers!

@@MetalDetecting24 Minelab sent me one to review and test, I used it for some time, here in UK, I really liked how it avoids coke, but unfortunately the ID numbers of iron targets are really high, my friend uses it now and he found a trick, he switches to all metal mode and if the number is significantly lower there than any other mode, he just doesn't dig the target, basically he found a glitch in the matrix . Most of the good hammered silver coin targets were showing between 8 and 11. But let's not target they were very thin silver. On bigger targets it hits 13, milled silver it can go up to 25. 15-17 is almost usually pull tab and bottle cap. Small gold rings are very low, 8-9 with bigger ones go up to 13 , good luck to you. I use bulgarian Deeptech Vista X, it's a bit hot dual tone detector, but once you get used to it, there's no turning back.

This sounds like an interesting trick. I still have my Vista Gold. Unfortunately something is wrong with it. When it gets hot outside, the DISC break point changes all by itself (not the knob, which stays in the same position, but something inside). I made two hunts with lots of iron signals, just to discover at the very end that even coins dropped on the surface (for testing purposes) sounded like iron. It's a shame because I liked using it. The 540 had a bigger (and heavier) coil. I thought the 10" will be perfect for me. The 540 was also more expensive (over here). I didn't want to spend that much, when there is not that much of performance difference.

Vanquish was less EMI prone at this spot. It runs stable and has a pleasant audio. Deus has better ergonomics, more setting options and higher audio intelligence (which can help to skip some trash and move faster forward). Of course there also is the price factor. In the end of the day it really depends on your own preference.
