A look back at the extraordinary career of Dennis Rodman. Follow Nonstop Sports • Instagram - / nonstop • Twitter - / nonstop • TikTok - / nonstop Imagery supplied by Getty Images How Good Was Dennis Rodman Actually?
When you’re young you tend to only really need 3/4hrs of rest and you’re good to go. Especially if you’re an energetic beast like Rodman was in his prime… he likely felt like a ghoul most of the time tho due to his lifestyle but I imagine he didn’t care lol
I think Detroit had a shot in 91 if we hadn't lost Ricky Mahorn in the expansion draft after the 89 Championship. They had to rely of James Edwards for a big game and they sorely missed Ricky backing down big players in the paint.
One of the oldest statements in basketball is "Offense makes the highlight reels, but defense wins the game". Rodman was living proof of this statement.
I dont think thats basketball but sports generally, offense wins you games defense wins you championships is said in every team sport where there is offense and defense
they had Rodman say that line in the movie "DOUBLE TEAM" with Jean Claude Van Damme lmao they even used that clip in the commercials I still remember it from my childhood
Dennis is the best role player of all time in my opinion. Not just because he’s one of the best rebounders, hustlers, and outlet passers but because he actually made the other players play worse. His off the ball defensive antics are legendary. Dennis got in plenty of fights but wouldn’t actually punch you. He would just piss you off until you shoved him or tried to punch him and then he knew he was in your head. You’re more worried about how to hit him back without getting caught rather than focusing on your game. Bro was like poison to opposing players.
Id go as far to say he is the best off the ball player, he kinda defended 5 guys at the same time, not in literal sense of locking them down, but in the way you explained, plus you were always scared if you miss against him more than agains others because you knew that the ball will almost always end up in his hands. also works other way around, if you are on his team your shots are way more relaxed knowing he is waiting if you screw up. he himself once said something similair to this
Which IMO made him one of the most underrated players ever (even if he is highly rated, not high enough) and also made him one of the first guy Id consider when making best team of all time
The Ultimate rare breed player that didn't care about scoring. All Dennis wanted to do on the court was to play tough defense, hustle, rebound, and get in your head.
I’m A Pistons Fan But I Don’t Know- Jordan Was Sweet. Kobe, The 1 Time I Saw Him Play Was Sweet. These MewGuys Don’t Look Sweet When They Play Bit Then Again, I’m A Check. Went To Some Knicks Sixers & Pistons Games Recently And I Just Didn’t See That Pretty Ball Handling.
@@DailyDoseOfTopComment Lebron ain’t Jordan… they don’t even play the same…. Jordan is an elite scorer and Lebron is a work horse…. Two different styles… and I’m sure you could find a tall football player and he would play just like Rodman…lol
He was my role model when i was a kid during high school intramurals…. My father told me since all your teamates want to score and do the offense why dont you get the rebounds and play defense with heart.
Dennis is the prime example of a man who had tremendous heart, and relentless motor. Getting rebounds is all effort, especially on the offensive end, the fact Dennis statistically outrebounded Russel and Wilt is absolutely insane…
i'm glad this video touched on his Bball IQ - I feel like that was Rodman's most underappreciated asset. I honestly believe Rodman could go down as one of the best assistant coaches of all time. His ability to analyze the game and focus extensive hours on each players is unreal.
You never see guys literally throwing their entire bodies through the air all the time in every single game the way Dennis did. He showed more hustle and heart on defense than anybody ever has, and he could also score if necessary. He went all out just to win, and Michael deeply respected that intensity and desire to win because he was that way too.
KG on the same level in that regard of hustling and playing with heart. Main difference was KG was better offensive player while Rodman had better Defensive IQ
2:50 I greatly appreciate that you took the time to mention how defense takes more effort and willpower than offense. too often it's looked at as being easier, or just overlooked because it isn't as flashy. there is a reason that there are fewer great defenders than there are great offensive players, it's more difficult and takes more skill and brainpower.
10:04 ;-; finally someone else says this. they'd have never won even one of their second three without him. in terms of skill compared to the next closest player in their position/at what they were doing, rodman was far and away the best at what he did and jordan would have been more replaceable than him on that team.
how is defense too often lookes as being easier, literally anybody who knows anything about sports knows that it is harder to be great defender than great offensive player, since it does nod depend on your skillset directly but on your ability to analyse and follow your opponent. other part about being overlooked I agree
It was such a pleasure watching Rodman play when I grew up. It was not unusual to see him play most of a game with 0pts, a few assists, and 20+ rebounds. His defense and sheer will on the court made him an animal.
I like Rodman's story alot. Usually athletes with very problematic life ends up getting dragged down by it which ruins their playing career, but this freak of nature carried on like a soldier and even became the GOAT of defensive basketball. Massive respect to him🔥
You're so on point. I'm just curious to what could be his motivation,to take such keen interest on rebound and defense. I suppose this boils down to his natural and background history,ie nature of his mental origin, birth and upbringing. What was needed in such nature, and was lacking, which he also experienced and made it his purpose to create and provide that, and that become a priority,an interest and motivation/driving force.
Rodman is in the top 3 of my favorite players, because he changed atleast my perspective of basketball which is “you don’t have to be dominant scorer to be great” this man really has all the skills a offensive based team would need.
An athletic big who could run the offense and defend at a high level, his impact on winning was huge... I remember going to a Bulls game in 97-98. Dennis Rodman screamed on Toni Kukoc!!! "GET IN THE LANE LUC!" That shit sent chills down my body! He was a true floor general... Rodman & Pippen was my favorite in the era of Be Like Mike... says a lot when a 10 year old kid sees something beyond MJ...
I mean its not unheard of, he got it around 19-20 that is still pretty young. I agree most people finish majorly growing by their 17-18 year and almost nobody grows much past 25, but technically not irregular. especially if you believe that epigenetics is an actual thing, and him playing basketball influenced that Edit: might be wrong on this one, but I think Scottie also grew relatively late compared to most
@@raejonnriggins I think MJ is the goat, but gotta be honest, replace him with another superstar, they win 3-4, replace rodman they win 3, but replace pippen they win like 1-2 tops
@@christianmlopez2725 can’t lie wit you Ben Wallace is an amazing defender at 6’9 at the center position that’s unheard of, but I would rather take Rodman out of respect because he would lock down all 5 positions but Ben is right up there
Dennis is the NBA player I would most like to have a dinner and drinks with, and just listen to the man talk. I can't place it perfectly, but it feels like he has such an amazingly huge heart and love for his fellow man, but he just feels so achingly alone.
I love me some Dennis Rodman he lived his life he did his job in NBA he won his rings he had his fun he did his dirt he's a tourist bull and I will always respect and love Dennis Rodman when people say live your life he did so don't hate on him he's a Hall of famer now that part
7:03 Rodman was doing some of the highest levels of math and physics in practice defense to prepare for games. That is insanity!! The guy was golden from the start. 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Dennis was awesome man. I know he had his issues but I really feel like he was doing the best he could underneath the heavy circumstances he found himself under.
It's one thing to have an impact in your main lane, but this man also unapologetically obliterated certain barriers fashion-wise and really deserves his flowers for that
I worked hard on my defense and vertical all summer because of how inspired i was by this GOAT OF DEFENSE type player. Winning positions and getting the Offensive boards is one of the best feelings in basketball😁👍👍
Dennis Rodman was one of the most versatile defenders, and best rebounders, to ever play in the NBA. He won five rings with the Pistons and the Bulls. While Rodman was a great player, he was also unique. His near-complete lack of offense keeps him from being ranked as highly as some of the greatest of all time. Rodman was considered highly talented, but also extremely controversial. He also clashed with coaches, teammates, and the media during his time in San Antonio, so the Spurs were eager to move on from him despite his impressive rebounding abilities. He was one of the very best one-on-one defenders to ever play the game. Also, He played 14 seasons with the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks. He also clashed with David Robinson and never seen to respected him as a player, so he never liked him at all.
it's weird that americans call it that. In pretty much the rest of the world "army" encompasses all armed forces. Land Army, navy, airforce special forces etc. Maybe that's what he meant, but I don't know.
Love rodman he plays D on the court and inside opponents heads at same time. Reminds me so much of Ron Artest. Kobe was like MJ on that team with Lamar being like pippen.
Rodmans offense is criminally underrated, he had stated that "Scoring is easy" and he DID make it look easy whenever he scored. Rodman may had accepted his role of being defense but his offense was enough to shock people.
After I got moved up a grade for an elementary BB team half the players wouldn't pass me the ball. No problem. I was in Michigan and Rodman was on the Pistons...I knew who to model my game after and it was a blast.
He’s the prime example of working extremely hard and party extremely hard! My Uncle saw Prime Dennis up close in Las Vegas in the late 90s said he didn’t have one ounce of body fat was as ripped as a Greek God.
Rodman was the nearly perfect complimentary player to Jordan. Worked as hard as MJ, especially in the playoffs. Rodman was arguably the Finals MVP of the Seattle series or at least the closest another Bull came to taking the finals MVP over Jordan.
@@sideshowbobsaget8876 No it is not disrespectful at all. He was tenacious and you got to give him credit for it period. Bill Russell is a legend ofcourse but Dennis is in a league on his own aswell. He'd make Bill Russell proud so comparing them is pretty good. Rodman got heart, he wants it bad and usually that spooks alot of players to play out of their comfort zone but yeah they couldn't win over his tenacity. Rod completes teams, explains alot of the history of Pistons, Spurs and Bulls and it's totally true those teams couldn't have won championships without him so is it still disrespectful to compare him with Russell? He was a rebel so he can't be made as a poster boy by the NBA "Too controversial" but he could have been one of the NBA's poster boy if he cared about image and his resume is nothing to scoff at. Take Stockton for instance, dude is a beast but yeah he played dirty. You won't hear the NBA make him a poster boy but it's undeniable how good Stockton was. His competitors hated him that much which just speaks volume on how smart he played and there wouldn't be a Malone without Stockton a league all on his own that one too.
@@m0n4rch911 Comparing a role player to the GOAT winner in sports, a MVP, a top 5 player of all-time is disrespectful. Malone was playing at an All-Star level before Stockton was even a starter, again you're comparing a role player to an MVP. That's like comparing Horry to Rodman. The Pistons were in the 87 ECF when Rodman was 8th in min, Rodman never won with San Antonio, the Bulls had a 3peat before Rodman.
One of the greatest rebounders and defenders. He won 7 straight rebounding titles (Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain never did that feat) . He also won 5 titles with the Pistons (Joe Dumars and Isiah Thomas) and Bulls (Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen) .
Wilt and russel would have 13 straight rebounding titles if one of them played in another era so they didnt have to compete againist eachother and rodman was never the best player on his the rings that he won
Dennis was kinda sorta weird but boy could he rebound.I loved to see him in action. The way he taunted other players was unbelievable 🤣🤣..I loved the way he would entangle his legs with other players Carl Malone comes to mind.🤭🤣🤣..Dennis lived his life the way he wanted but it never interfered with his playing the game of basketball.Rodman was a joy to watch as he would spring into air for a rebound.❤️❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
If you're building a championship team, since there's no way you're running 5 GOAT candidates, Dennis is a GREAT SF/PF pick. With a coach that can steer him, he's absolutely incredible. He's a guy that you can leave 1 on 1 with almost anyone in NBA history, that'll get you 15 rebounds a game and doesn't need or particularly even want the ball on offense. He's in my dream lineup that you *might* actually be able to get on one team. 😂 Derrick Fisher Michael Jordan Scottie Pippen Dennis Rodman Hakeem Olajuwon
smart man, ive been saying this forever, best lineup is not the same as best players on each position. Kevin garnett and Tim Duncan are also great picks for the team as Garnett could literally play any position and he showed tha he can be third option very well, and Tim is just Tim, no point in explaining him. Ben Wallace is also great option and heavily overlooked. Jason Kidd is another one
@@Noin007 hahahaha yes I agree definitely, and it is generally sad how little people appreciate the flexibility of such players i often say that even though Jordan is the goat he is the most replacable piece on that team, people often disregard how great players like Pippen or Rodman are (Rodman in my opinion actually being the greatest off the ball player that ever played, if not the best then top 5-top 3 most definitely)
@@nbassasin8092 I'm not sure which team you mean by "that team", the one I made up or the '96-'98 Bulls? 😅 I feel like there's plenty of guys you could swap around if you wanted to replace any one player on the one I threw together. For example, if you want to drop Jordan but still have that clutch killer... Drop both Rodman and Jordan and put in Reggie & Bird. Bird was actually a great rebounder. And with both Bird & Reggie you'll have the floor really spaced out so they can't easily double Hakeem. Fisher, Reggie, Bird, Rodman & Hakeem Or maybe you want to keep Jordan, but you want to add Lebron. So then you drop Hakeem and Pippen to pick up Lebron and Ben Wallace or Mutumbo. But then you'd need more offense, so maybe drop Rodman and pick up someone like Rasheed Wallace. And then just cause, swap Fisher for Ron Harper. Giving you: Harper, Jordan, Lebron, Sheed & Wallace.
He literally played his heart out. He is so fricken physical n will fuck with your mind. He gets into their head to make them fuck up. Love this documentary. I always knew he was the best defensive player in history
Mad respect for Rodman and players like Udonis Haslem who didn’t have to drop a lot of points to show how great they were and instead demonstrated it by the hustle they brought to the court
