How Good Was Mark Webber's F1 Career

Mark Webber was the people's hero in his time with Sebastian Vettel. On his day, he was relentlessly quick and this worked to great effect early on in his career. However, a change to Pirelli rubber in 2011 hampered his ability to push the car lap after lap without having to worry too much about tyre management. Here's a look back at some of the highlights and whether I think he could have won a championship or not.

Mark was rather underrated. But his best years was at Jaguar/Williams when he needed a top team. Had a great chance in 2010 but I think that pressure of being his only title fight got to him. If he was able to break into F1 earlier maybe he could have had more chances and maybe even getting a WDC maybe?
@BMPHF1
@BMPHF1 3 года назад
Yeah for sure. He was a beast in the Jaguar and especially in the Williams. I think also the change to Pirelli’s also held him back as he likes to push the car as hard as possible but due to increased tyre wear, he couldn’t.

Enjoyable and fair video on Mark. Two things I think need to be taken into account when considering Marks career. The first was his height which meant he was losing an estimated couple of tenths a lap compared to Seb just because of unavoidable weight difference and a couple of extra tenths in quali could have put him ahead of the dogfight that he often got stuck in. The second is that people are often keen to point out how badly Seb beat Mark in 2013 but, to put it simply, after the multi-21 incident and the decision to retire, Mark had 0 motivation and had mentally already checked out of F1...so it's probably not a fair comparison 🤔. Good video as always 👍

David James Noble Thank you David. Yeah I agree. Height was such a disadvantage for him and Nico Hulkenberg as well because they would lose time simple because of their body. And then in 2013, yeah after Mullti-21, it was kinda like Mark wasn’t bothered to try anymore which is fair enough considering how he’d been treated by RB. Also, do you think the change to Pirelli rubber affected his career somewhat? With the Michelin/Bridgestone tyres, you didn’t have to worry too much about tyre wear as much as now and in 2011 when Pirelli came in, he was unable to push to the limit due to that tyre wear.

For me some of the best moments in F1 have been watching Webber and Alonso race each other. It's perfect. They both knew exactly the limits you could push another driver to without crashing into each other, or giving up and handing them the position. It was also nice to see the respect these two drivers had for each other extend off the track as well, and we got to see that wonderful moment of Alonso picking up a stranded Webber and giving him a lift back to the pit in Singapore 2013.

I have to agree with everything you said. And it's refreshing to hear someone acknowledge Webber's achievements and attributes. Unfortunately here in Australia, many grew to dislike him. However, many of those know nothing of F1, the politics and the favouritism present in the Red Bull garage. Tall poppy syndrome is prevalent in our culture too, and people just thought he was having a whinge. Even if they didn't like his personality, I would say to them that you can't choose this. Just be grateful that we have an Aussie competing in F1, and vying for a championship. It's extremely difficult to get a seat, let alone keep it, and Australia had seen a bit of a drought since AJ. I would only add that Webber did have some issues with starting that cost him podiums. And even before it was clear that he was number two, would often get the disadvantage of pitting order even though he would be leading Vettel. It was a great shame that he did not win that close championship, I was gutted for him. He did have some terrible luck throughout his career as you say, and his first win was long overdue. My favourite wins would have to be Monaco and Silverstone. Thanks for the great video.

Great video. The time that Webber spent in formula 1 was very quiet due to the fact that he had very poor cars at the start of his career and was heavily underrated with Vettel as his teammate. The way you have explained not only his career that ended 7 years ago, but all of his success and potential in the sport. For me Webber was overshadowed by an impressive young Sebastian Vettel. It's kind of like the video, where you explained, that Lewis Hamilton is more than his car. He makes Bottas and Rosberg look mediocre, while they are actually capable drivers. If it wasn't for Vettel's late charge and Webbers bad luck, at the end of 2010 (in Korrea, had to look it up) , he could've won a championship. Though it defenitely wasn't easy for him as a number 2 driver, I actually understand Red Bull's decision. Vettel was faster and deserved to be prioritised, as he had a bigger chance of winning races and eventually world championships. For me Webber is sort of a “what if driver". As allways a very nice video, I hope you'll get the attention you deserve. Have a good day mate (Sorry if there are any errors, I'm German)

Leicester City FC Your English is perfect buddy. I used to do German in secondary school but I won’t even attempt to say anything to you in German because I can’t 🤣. Anyway, Mark Webber. Yes, Vettel was a young and super quick driver who just jumped in the car and was challenging Mark already. I’d have to look deeper into the 2009 season to determine how good Vettel was that year. But for me, it set the tone for future years. Red Bull knew that Vettel was faster and younger so they invested into him and it bred huge success. Mark was just unlucky with the timing of his arrival and also his spin in Korea 2010. He was World Championship material for sure. I’m probably gonna do a video doing justice for Vettel as I feel like his championships are underrated by a lot of people. A lot of people have had a change of heart now he is struggling in Ferrari but there are still some who don’t think he’s one of the greatest ever.

I was a huge Webber fan. I think the reason he did not have more success is that the particular design of the red bull car exposed his weaknesses. The setup of the car made it great to run away in clear air, but vulnerable in battle. Fast as it was on a full lap, it needed the driver to be able to open a gap to survive the straights. Webber wasn't a great starter so often he would immediately be fighting that uphill battle while the team and Vettel would perfect the qualifying strategy and the start. Nearly always Seb was the very last driver over the line on Saturday, with mere seconds to spare and the most rubbered down track in front of him, then on Sunday he was consistently able to convert the front row start into a modest lead in the first couple of laps. I remember dreading the start because I knew that all too often, Webber would let someone mug him before turn 1.

Webber was destined for so much more than a few race wins. While a good record his career is somewhat underwhelming. I think that Webber could have been world champion because of his immense work ethic and very strong pace. However, there are a few very fair reasons why he didn't. He wasn't as fast as Vettel for 1, which ultimately is the reason he was the number 2 at Red Bull. He because number 2 simply because Vettel was better, but, while Red Bull's treatment was fair to Webber, it also really stopped any momentum he had. In the end, Webber was a great driver destined for titles, but his team mate was better than him and Red Bull made him the number 2. Should have done more though and was clearly capable of doing so. Another great video mate. Keep up the fantastic content.

Vettel came in and was instantly faster than Webber. He established that number 1 status in 2009. Seb was ultimately faster at the end of the day but had he not come into the team, I felt Red Bull would have really rallied around Mark as he performed well in 2007 and 2008. Webber had a chance to contend for the title in 2009 after a podium in hungary trailed the struggling brawn of Button by 18.5 pts with 7 races to go, However his car and bad luck let him down in 3 or 4 of those races aswell as his lack of pace in Belgium and collision in Italy ended that hope. 2010 as you say 14 points ahead of Vettel and Alonso. We don't know where he'd have finished without that crash, but there's a good chance that he'd be a world champion. Abu Dhabi qualifying really cost him as much aswell. He should've been ahead of Alonso in that car. P3 minimum. That forced him to pit early in the race and arguably should've done that behind the SC. And Algersuari potentially put the nail in the coffin by holding him up for that 1 lap extra which allowed Alonso to maintain position. Petrov might've let him through at that time as rb and renault had same engine. But he'd still be stuck behind Rosberg. 2011-13 KERS and the weight thing killed any hope of another championship aswell as the perelli tyres favouring Vettel's style.

Sorry for the delayed comment, been a hell of a work week. 😉 Mark Webber was undoubtedly extremely quick, if not inconsistent. On his day, on bridgestones he was faster than vettel, especially in high speed corners. Recalling Nick Heidfeld's BTG podcast, he remarked Sebastian wasn't anything special when he tested the bmw. The blown era and especially with the introduction of Pirelli hobbled Mark while coincidentally empowering Seb. That fragile rubber was beyond the old dogs ability to nurse and extract the best from. Then there's the redbull dynamic. Both helmut, Mateschitz and probably Horner wanted the youngest f1 world champion to bolster the redbull brand. Him being German was an added bonus. The silverstone incident was a telling one. Mark was ahead of Seb in the standings, so why take his front wing? Doesn't make sense from a sporting point of view. That said, Mark was a notoriously bad starter but on his day had the "grit" to go toe to toe with the very best. His overtake on Fernando in Eau rogue is far better than the mika/schumacher zonta one. (Never quite got why so many get so hung up on that rather simple slipstream overtake). I'm quite fond of his honesty, straightforwardness and is an excellent pundit. Top bloke. 👍 Ps. If you haven't already, I strongly suggest listening to his BTG podcast. One of the best.

Biggest mistake in his career, at the end of the season 2004; his manager Briatore offered him race in Renault alongside Alonso which is his one of the best friend in F1. Webber refused that offer and made his choice race for iconic Williams-BMW as a number 1 driver. At the end of first race of the season 2005 Australian Gp, When he heard from team radio Fisichella won the race, he was in shock and frustration. He could be in that seat. Mark's prime seasons was between 2003-2005 and 2010. When Bridgestone era is over, he was never ever good with Pirelli and suffered with Tyre management. If you would like to hear from Coulthard, comparison between Webber and Raikkonen; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mYejb_H0tEY.html Thanks for the video, nice job mate! Pirelli’s defo did him in. It’s so gutting to know that had he made one alternative decision, we would be having a very different conversation about his career. Would he have beaten Alonso? Who knows? But the opportunity was there and he unfortunately missed it. Same in 2010. My heart sunk for him after Korea. And once he lost the championship that year, he never got another chance to fight again.
@kadircam8296
@kadircam8296 3 года назад
@@BMPHF1 In 2005, in his primetime he might not could beat Alonso maybe he could consistently race for championship for sure. If you watch his qualy lap in 03 Sepang, commentator called him young driver, but actually he was 27. He just get into F1 very late, the only reason is he couldn't afford motorsport career and with donations of Aussie legends he could find a seat in Minardi. He broke his leg before 2009 season began. When he could comeback into cockpit in healthy condition and race for championship (2010), he was 34. 2010 F1 season such a big pain in my heart, even team didn't support him, he could won the championship. As people know, Mark is a fan of outdoor sports. He broke his leg in a accident with car when he was cycling in mountains. (Nov 2008) His hobby cost him a lot in 2020. Just 4 races before end of 2010 season, 1 week before Japan Gp, he broke his shoulder in a mountain bike accident and he hide that injury from team. Final punch came in Korea, when spun and end his race on the wall, it was end of his chance to win championship... For season 2013, he could race for Ferrari with Alonso, but he refused the contract because of it was 1+1 year deal, at the end he just wanted show loyalty to team. Nowayears we do not see drivers in Red Bull Racing who isn't part of Red Bull rookie program. Dietmar Mateschitz, owner of Red Bull, he was fan of Webber and kept him in the team. Webber could race for Red Bull 6 years because of his loyalty, his consistency and in his skills about development of a car. Dietmar, Horner, Newey trust in him, and even Webber wasn't fast as like before, he was still there for development of the car and make the team 4x times world champion. I started watch him in Minardi and became his fan in Jaguar, watched many races and in that races I was hoping for him score couple of points. When he could won the race and his first victory, I was crying same as like him. Except Aussies in the world, there wasn't that much international fan of him. We was alone on this way, but we could won the race after 7 years in F1. He wasn't Schumacher, Mika, Fernando and for sure wasn't fastest guy in the F1 history, but he was my favorite driver in his whole career. If you could read my comment till this sentence, well done mate, I owe you beer 😄 P.s: I'm not a native English speaker, accept my apologies if any mistake or if some confusion I did it.

These are the names Fisichella dominated in bad cars: Ralf Schumacher, Jenson Button and Felipe Massa. And Fisi completely outdrove and destroyed the career of once highly rated Alex Wurz.

I think what Mark Webber achieved was phenomenal given that he had it tough driving sub-standard machinery in the earlier years, and then later in Red Bull when the emphasis and focus was all around Vettel.

Also, knocking the f1's door at 26 year of age ( 2002 ) is a disadvantage while all his rivals of the Redbull times ( Hamilton, Button , Vettel, Alonso,Raikkonen, etc.) were guys that started F1 by age 20-21. By 2009, when he had a competitive car, he was already an almost "old" man at 33 years old.

If you were not convinced already of Mark’s tough never give up commitment after the vomiting incident, racing with a broken leg and racing with fractured rib then maybe the two times he drove his Williams that had severe cockpit overheating issues. During the 2005 French GP the heat was so bad Webber radioed his team and asked them to have water ready to pour into the cockpit. The problem persisted and Webber soldiered on to finish 12th and sustained a large burn on his hip.

To me, he was very good and done very well. Just consider he started f1 at the age of 26. This is late even by 2002 standards. When we know Senna landed in F1 at 24 years of age , Schumacher 22 , Hakkinen 22, Verstappen 17, Raikonnen 21, etc. The last time we had a world champion who started f1 in the second half of his 20s were Mansell and Prost ...............in a completely different era when starting f1 at these ages where the norm. Older drivers started even older like Laffitte, Regazzoni , Reutemann and Rosberg at 30 yrs. Secondly, Vettel was 10 years younger than him. It's (was) not fair to expect the performance of a boy who starts karting at 4 yrs and lands into f1 at 20 yrs.

I still think Webber would have won in 2010 if he'd not broken his shoulder in a biking accident prior to the last four races. His drop in form was noticeable, even if we - and Red Bull - only found out later what the cause was. Vettel was a better driver in that era of car though, so I think it would have been his only Championship even with the boost in confidence and prestige a win would have garnered.

At the end of 2004 Flavio Briatore (Webber's Manager at the time) offered him a contract alongside Alonso at Renault for '05 and '06. In my opinion that would have been his best shot at a championship. It may well have played out in similar fashion to his 2010 fortunes whereby he missed out for whatever reason, but that's the one that still stings for me as an Aussie. Also re: Vettel's reliability issues in 2010, Mark did get lucky in that when he had issues it was on a Friday or Saturday but this trash talk about him having 2 crashes and Vettel deserving it more for having more flattering DNFs isn't really true. Does no-one remember how many petulant mistakes young Vettel used to make? Anyone remember him slamming into the side-pod of Jenson Button at the bustop chicane in Belgium? Vettel deserved 2010 on pure pace, sure, but he spent a lot of time trying his darnedest to throw that Championship away haha. Plenty of drivers deserve championships on pure pace terms but miss out. If Vettel didn't win 2010 we wouldn't be sitting here wondering what could have been for him, we'd be celebrating how Alonso or Webber managed to pull off winning the most even year this sport has ever seen.

Fisichella beat Ralf Schumacher, Jenson Button and Felipe Massa to earn the 2005-2006 Renault seat. Who did Webber beat at the time?🤔🤔 Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But it's easy to critizise when a driver underperforms at a top team. Fisichella is far better than Perez is. Stroll made Perez look good. This is the same Perez who wasn't even close to Hulkenberg and Ocon in qualifying.
