Over the years we’ve spent millions of dollars serving the almighty algorithm, almost like a god that we have to optimize for.
The reason why you are even watching this video is because we figured it out, back in 2016. We figured out how to rank for Google- but it wouldn’t last.
We soon discovered how ranking for the algorithm is, like with many things in the business world, a question of money- a question that makes Google ever more powerful and that has spun obscure markets for shady SEO tactics. We learned first how much Google can take away. We discovered that Google’s plans just don’t align with what companies want.

As a software engineer I think factoring things like page load times, accessibility, mobile friendliness, etc is totally acceptable. The Google engineers usually give a good indication of what's important to them long in advance.

I think what Google does is the most fair to all. Otherwise, the space would just be dominated by incumbents, who have had ample time to adjust for the algorithm. Doing it this way, they allow for new actors to enter the stage and compete on closer terms to everyone else.

A tale as old as the modern internet. I was a freelance layout artist/book designer in the early ‘10s. A lot of my work came from this Canadian guy who put together Sci-Fi anthologies. Really regular work, it was great. Then one day it all stopped. Turns out that he was running several parked domains with ads on them that ranked really well and he was making a serious mint and bankrolling the book business like that. Google put a stop to that with an update and the party was over. 😢

I remember it being more than just content & backlinks they were looking for. In addition to a desktop website, they wanted you to have a mobile website. Something I really didn't want to do. I wanted to have the website display on a large monitor, period.
@birukch7871

Creating a website just for desktop is a bad idea unless your specific website can only be functional on desktop. Over 70% of web browsing happens on mobile. In fact modern websites prioritize mobile over desktop.

@@birukch7871 That's a myth. It's actually much lower than that. It's something like 70% of all internet traffic is generated from mobile, not "browsing" "Web Browsing" is a term specific to websites. Still, web traffic can include all the content you consume, such as viewing products on ecom websites and using social media such as FB, Insta, Twitter, etc. But this does not require a website per se. Most of the web traffic is generated from a desktop. So if you're actually seeking traffic for your website, your traffic numbers look like 40% mobile and 60% PC unless, of course, you have an ecom website.
@jzk2020
@jzk2020 Год назад
I learned this lesson a LONG time ago... do not put all your money on Google. Do not depend on Google for your traffic. Because all it takes is 1 update and you'll wake up with nothing to show for everything you've invested into your business. I would also caution people not to depend on FB ads or any other platform.... because you'll be 1 ban away from losing it all. Build an email list, build a great brand that gets free promotion from word of mouth. Then you don't need to worry about those platforms messing you over.

I had no idea this struggle was occurring. Seems like every attempt by an authority to make a fair playing field for all participants, eventually devolves over time into a playing field biased towards the most powerful. Systems that obfuscate this power bias just make it even more difficult for newcomers, since there's now all sorts of weird loopholes and tricks they have to be aware of in order to attempt to participate. The only people that benefit from obfuscating the powerful is the powerful, and they now have incentive to lobby the system to keep these stupid systems in-place to keep their place on-top.

"every attempt by an authority to make a fair playing field for all participants" The sad part is that these actions are usually started by a company to gain market share. They approach politicians, give them money and create a 'new law' for them to present to the public. This new law is so elaborate/complex that to the public it appears good, but in the end it benefits that company.

I would say that backlinks do matter but I wouldn't place all your eggs in that basket when it comes to SEO. The same goes for CWVs, very important to monitor and optimize but not worth spending all your time and resources into it, unless you're a news site or where site speed plays a higher role in UX, some people over at Google even said this. Of course, it all depends on a lot of other factors, so take what you read on the internet with a grain of salt and try it yourself when it comes to SEO. That's my two cents. 😅

I have started to use google less, because every time I search for information about a thing that could in any way be associated with something you can purchase, all you get in the results are stores to buy said thing. And if I google for images of something, the only results that are showing are images of items from said stores. Google has gone from being about information to being all about consuming goods.

He would put all the keywords as hidden/invisible text down at the bottom of the page in tiny font so you'd get it on there thousands of times. Hahah. Of course, that doesn't work nowadays, hasn't for a long time. Good little tricks from way back when.

Caya, if you think SEO is completely manipulated by Google, think about the PPC model (Ads). That’s why we’re using our own machine learning instead of Google. We can have soft savings in about 30% of the total investment, or relocate the budget according to the bid strategy using SEO/SEM real time data properly. Pura Vida!

I think moving forward you'll have to tweak the business model. Google search, as your customer channel will have to diminish in stature. Like you said, RU-vid and tiktok videos is a start. Probe more options so that you don't have to depend on Google. Yes, the marketing budget will have to bulge up again in this process. It's a gamble but if it works out the payoff is worth it. Doing nothing while the guillotine hangs is also a risk. It's definitely a dilemma.

Why give up control of your business or depend revenue from another larger entity on which you have no control? Your story reminds me of someone hitch-hiking to success and profit but unsurprisingly all that can be taken away. Wouldn't it be better to build a product so Great that your clients will recommend your product to other people (ie. friends, family, etc) and thus recommend to more people. An author (MJ Demarco) talks about this idea of "Productocracy."

If you’re looking for the truth, or even just another account or theory, about anything that goes against whatever the mainstream narrative is, on literally ANY subject, it’s always several pages back now. Even if you know what you’re looking for and you type in some very specific search terms, they have a way of pushing back any results with opinions or ideas the establishment finds unacceptable. We’ve been lied to about so much. Most people know we’ve been lied to about some things, but they have no idea how bad it really is. When someone repeats the hyperbolic cliché “everything you’ve been taught is a lie”, becomes more true with everything I look into. As soon as you start to think “well, they lie, yes, but they wouldn’t lie about (fill in the blank)”, you decide to look into whatever that topic is, and it won’t take long for you to realize that, “YES! They lie more often than they tell the truth”. It’s depressing. And I’m only talking about verifiable lies. There are lies, major lies, that have been exposed, lies that have had a major influence on world events and people’s worldview, that most people don’t even know. It’s not discussed regularly in media or in education, so even though the truth has been admitted or declassified, most people don’t know bc the correction doesn’t make the headlines. I could list endless examples of things people believe about the world or specific events that have been proven false but the record was never corrected, at least not in a way that made sure everyone was aware. The lie, the original story that was wrong, just keeps going on as if it were never proven to be totally false. It’s astonishing how most people have no idea how bad it is, how many things we accept as truth that are totally and provably false.

I love your content but why this clickbait-ish title or this attitude behind the title of "how google f*d you." Honestly, the opposite is true. Google helped you. By your own admission, people would not be able to find you otherwise either through searches and/or content marketing. Plus, in all honesty, I don't think you have really strong product market fit to begin with. Powerpoint (established), Google Slides (free and convenient), Keynote (free and pretty), Presi (unique) were all well established in the market. Founders and business owners have a lot of problems. Maybe pitching and presenting is one of them but I don't know if a whole separate tool from what they already own and have access to and works really well is what they need. Fall in love with the customer not your solution. It's ok to pivot to get better product market fit. I'm not saying I have it either. Maybe that is where you pivot. Use your knowledge of SEO to help founders find better product market fit for their skillset.
