I have used pneumatic cylinders in past projects, so they were the perfect choice to use when I decided to build a life sized version of a toy from my childhood. In this video I prototyped the punching arm mechanism and tested it out by connecting it to the air compressor.

The genuine excitement at the punching motion was fun to watch. It's always awesome to see something that was once in our head work in real life.

Why not use a motor to move the arms ? Stepper motor etc

That is certainly a great option. I really wanted to use pneumatic cylinders because I think they're cool, and probably cheaper than a stepper motor of the same strength.
