I remember watching the original Parent Trap when I was a kid and seeing the name Hayley Mills twice in the credits... I thought it was really strange to give both your twin daughters the same name 🤦♀️
If there are twins out there that both wanna be actors I assume they would want to more independent instead of always playing twin roles with their twin.
I love one interview they asked them if they were real twins, and one of them said "no, we actually first met at the audition for the movie" xD I love they could hire real twins that have such a true fred and george energy to portrait them
@@laurapiacentinicasarin8205 I mean they went audition for the Weasley twins role just so they can skip school.. If that didn't scream Fred and George idk what else.
People who ask ‘why can’t they use real Twins?’, well sometimes one of the twins may not be an actor so they can’t act. Audition process is also grueling; they want to use a good actor to portray certain characters.
Also siblings probs wouldn’t want to always be out together so even if they where both actors, it doesn’t mean they’re both be available to to a family gig

Tatiana Maslany's mind-blowing performances in Orphan Black are a masterclass in superior acting ability. Not only did she embody her five main characters with so much individuality that it was easy to forget they were all played by the same actor (they looked like entirely different people!!!), but episode after episode, season after season, she also did this with dozens of side characters (remember the trans clone, Tony?) She also teased out the finest bits of nuance and depth in the five mains so that we could see their growth and development over time. It was an excellent TV series conceptually and the execution was fantastic but Tatiana Maslany is most of the reason why it was so damn phenomenal.
@@MorroTheGhostNinjayo me it was always sad to know that it was one person, they had such an amazing dynamic and chemistry that you wish they actually got to act with each other.
On the other side, child characters are often double-cast with twins (for a single role). This is because of child labor laws limiting the number of hours a child can work in a day.
I used to watch little house on the prairie and of course Carrie was played by alternating twins, however I was later confused at why they only credited Lyndsey Sydney Greenbush with the role and not her sisters name.
@Kzaxrtij Skather I agree. Even when they explained how the twin effect was achieved in "Maattraan," I still find some of the scenes mind-boggling. Like the scene when the other twin was already dead and the surviving twin has to drag his dead brother's body while crawling on the road.
Twin actor here: these techniques are super cool. At the same time, there’s definitely room for real twins to be used more often. I get that we’re a novelty, that’s one of the realities of having a guy who looks just like you, but at least let us do the twin stuff 😂
@@shanleyshoupe7873 That's a great point. Superman and Lois right now is a great example as the fraternal twin sons aren't actually fraternal twins... Nothing against the actors of course, but it's a bummer they didn't cast real twins.
Great breakdown of doubles in cinema and makes you appreciate the effort that went into Us. Also glad to see the shout out to BBC's Orphan Black, which is one of the best doubles effects in all of cinema and theater. seriously give it a look if you haven't seen it, it's freaking amazing
When my identical twin sister and I saw Harry Potter in theaters when we were around 13, we both freaked out because we immediately recognized that Fred and George were portrayed by actual identical twins instead of one person pretending to be identical twins. Having met at least 9 other sets of identical twins in my life, there are always tiny physical differences between identical twins. Mole placement, scars, and even a small difference in height is pretty common. I'm really disappointed that this video didn't address the Phelps twins.
No mention of What Happened To Monday? Sheesh that movie had Noomi Rapace played a set of identical septuplets and they all had different personalities.
hello im a twin perhaps twins are separate people and not one person in two bodies? twins dont want the same career by default. also most real twins wouldnt be cast bc hollywood wants identical twins cause thats more novelty, but i dont think most twins are identical, theyre fraternal. so thank you rori, lets not let one twin or a few sets of twins or one category of twins decide what the etiquette is for the whole demographic.
They want big name actors for movies. They cast the Weasley twins because they were specifically casting for unknown kids in Harry Potter, but the vast majority of movies rely on star power to sell
This is actually the worst thing about movies honestly How many great movies are there that people dont watch solely because it doesnt have some overly famous person in it
Lol for the longest time I thought that they were using special effects to create Xander's body double in Buffy the Vampire Slayer for that one episode where Xander has a clone, but then eventually I found out Nicolas Brendan had a real-life twin the entire time who wasn't an actor but was willing to play this part this one time.
Thank you for such an awesome and informative video! I’ve always had questions about how these movies were shot and it’s so nice to see all this here with visual aid and easy explanations ☺️☺️
Dead Ringers has a famous error when they cut too late in one scene, and one of the twins visibly fades into thin air as he exits the scene (like, you see him become translucent)
Real acting twins include Jodie Foster and Linda Hamilton and Eva Green. It was Linda's actual twin sister Leslie who doubled for her in 'T2-Judgement Day'. And Jodie's twin sister doubled for her in her early film 'The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane'. The movie 'Gremlins 2' made extensive use of actors who were real twins, so every once in awhile real twins ARE used.
The first example from The Parent Trap is sooo primitive that the left arm of the twin on the viewers left is cut off by the split screen as she lifts her arm up in the first second of the clip!
I remember that one star trek episode where they had Robert Picardo playing both The Doctor and his creator in the same scene. It was incredibly convincing at the time for television. Next to Orphan Black etc years later the effect kinda pales sadly (although that might also be because 90's shows doesn't translate very well into HD and Blu Rays)
As much as I love the twin effects work in Logan, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (7 Potters), Us etc, I'm still blown away everytime by George Meliés. Absolutely genius filmmaker.
I love the comments saying “just use real twins.” Twins aren’t as identical as you think and there really aren’t that many popular identical twin actors. Seriously try to name three you can’t.
The fact that identical twins are not 100% identical makes the characters even more realistic because everyone that knows twins can distinguish them after a few weeks of constantly being in contact so what's the point
Hollywood: “No amount of motion control, split screens or rotoscoping” can make this possible. Deep Roy from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: “hold my beer”
I actually stopped to look because they had drawn the line on the video to show the split but her arm went past it. Or so I thought until I watched frame by frame. With quick enough movement, no one noticed! Plus, with it being a rare-ish occurrence, people would be so mesmerized and not even notice.
@@EricaGamet yeah, I didn't even noticed at first either, I was playing the video at the lowest slowmotion setting mostly because I wanted to see if I spotted the place where they stitched together the film, and it comed like a total surprise
@@someoneyoullmeeteventually6834 after she said the filmmakers just stitched together the films to achieve the effect, I just wanted to see if I can spot the place better, so I reproduced the video in the lower playback setting.
People think its super amusing to have twins wear the same clothes, act the same or do things in synchrony and 99% of the time that is how they are portrayed. That isn't what being a twin is like though and it just makes me roll my eyes every time they have twins in a movie.
Thought this would be a video about how twin characters are portrayed in movies. Honestly, I'm really tired of the evil twin trope, and how so many people are under the misconception that all twins are identical. My siblings are fraternal twins, and its so awkward when they meet new people because folks find it fascinating for some reason. Its really not that weird, fraternal twins are have the same level of genetic difference than any other pair of siblings.
Well truthfully, twins ARE fascinating. I also don't think I've ever met anyone who believes that all twins are identical. How often does this happen to your brothers?
Occasionally they can use the actor’s real life twin to film a shot. In the second terminator movie, the T1000 version of Sarah Connor ( near the end of the movie) was played by Linda Hamilton’s identical twin sister, Leslie
...and in fact, there's another pair of twins earlier in the movie, when a security guard gets terminated. The Stanton twins (Don and Dan) also appeared (as twins) in Good Morning Vietnam.
i think Kylie Minogue's Come Into My World is a really good twinning or multiplying shots because it's all taken in one shot and there's 4x duplication
In Terminator 2 James Cameron used real twins to depict T-1000 in other forms. It was for Sarah Conner character (Linda Hamilton and Leslie Hamilton) and hospital security guard (Don Stanton and Dan Stanton). Interestingly most thought it was green screen.
Yea, I just found out about a year ago, the 90's movie "Twin Idaho Falls" about conjoined twins was really just 1 actor playing both parts. I literally cry every time I watch it, the ending is so sad.
My favorite "twin" movie was Moon. Same simple techniques (lots of motion control cameras) but the interaction between the characters was just so well done. Meanwhile, James Cameron just used Linda Hamilton's actual twin in T2. Much cheaper and faster than face replacement
Fun fact, they didn’t have to use any of these techniques in movies featuring the Olsen twin, because she’s just one person who can move back and forth really fast.
The tennis ball eyeline could be enhanced with perhaps a pair of tennis balls or 2 "eyes" set anatomically correctly distanced for the reacting actor's close ups. When we look someone in the eyes we tend to flick from one eye to the other, not blankly stare into one eye.
These techniques are super duper common in just your run-of-the-mill tv show that have nothing to do with twins, clones, or dopplegangers, but just the clients liking the performance of an actor in one take and liking a performance of another actor in a different take and as a VFX artist, it's just extremely annoying because these tasks can range from a little tedious to oh-my-god -why-couldn't-the-director-just-do-their-job?!
I may be missing something here, but if my genetics courses in university taught me anything, then something isn't adding up. You mentioned in the movie "The Prisoner of Zenda", there was a scene "where Ronald Colman shakes hands with his identical cousin"...... pretty sure you can't be identical to your cousin, unless there's some tricky family business going on.
Identical cousins was the entire premise of The Patty Duke Show. I never saw The Prisoner of Zenda, but I don't think in either case there was a tacit or implicit indication of incest. On The Patty Duke Show specifically, they (she?) were just cousins who happened to look exactly like one another.
If identical twins married identical twins, genetically their kids would be siblings. However, as with siblings (who aren't fraternal twins), the chances of them being identical is basically non-existent. The idea of identical cousins is absurd.
Very interesting video! But I'm not sure if the scene from Us at 0:13 is the best example because I can't see the face on the right at all. That could be anyone really... ;)
Make this interesting and tell us how they use these tricks in real life in Hollywood or better yet how 2 completely different people play the role of one actor or entertainer. I guess you can’t give us all the secrets 😉
Was talking about this to mate of mine other day, personally I would use actor and body double/stand in, then crop actors faces from other plate then mask that over stand in, then use colour correction to match the skin tone then tracking software when they move :)
Great informative video. I think they this sort of technology might come in handy for filming in the current climate where maybe close contact might not be advisable. At least it would prevent all movies being about characters standing 6ft apart from each other, which would get boring very quickly.
Remember “Multiplicity”, starring Michael Keaton? i remember that cloning technique being a big deal upon its release. i think it was even called the “Multiplicity” effect for a while.
