2020 presented Hollywood with plenty of challenges, but it also brought its own set of breakthroughs in the world of special effects. Here's a glimpse behind the scenes of 14 movies that featured imaginative animation, digital wizardry, lifelike practical effects, and cutting-edge stunt sequences.
2020's 3D-animated films found innovative ways to animate and light their unique characters and worlds, the likes of which we've never seen before - from a character made up of a pair of pants in Pixar's "Onward" to the otherworldly lunar kingdom seen in Netflix's "Over the Moon." Reboots like "Dolittle" and "The Call of the Wild," along with the long anticipated video-game movie "Sonic the Hedgehog," used VFX technology to combine CG animals with live-action human characters and environments.
Meanwhile, a combination of practical and digital effects made Machine Gun Kelly light on fire in "Project Power," designed a thrilling tunnel escape in "Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey," and created a terrifying villain out of nothing in "The Invisible Man." Finally, from the massive battle scenes in "Mulan" to the gripping fight sequences in "Extraction," "Birds of Prey," and "The Old Guard," this year's action films pushed actors and stunt performers to undergo extensive weapons and combat training to execute some truly impressive stunt work.

As someone who has worked as a background extra and stunt extra every set is beyond insane and they are so many people doing so many things! My mememorable one was World War Z with Brad Pitt in Glasgow. They shut down the entire George Square to film some of the scenes and they were over 1000 crew alone not counting the additional 500 extras. The equipments and stunt training and execution it's super hard work so when a movie turns out bad it sucks deeply for the makers because it's a real wasted investment. Either way I respect every single person involved in production. They do awesome work.

In the invisible man clip where she’s thrown across the table, it looks like a lot of force is being used to lift her up off the floor and across the table and ropes are pulling her in the direction of the table, but from the floor! I can’t help but think how brave and trusting you have to be in the crew because in just that one sene alone if the angles were off or there wasn’t enough lift to clear the table and slide across it, those would be some serious injuries at the rate she’s traveling in the harness if she hit the table edge straight on instead of clearing it just enough to thrown or pulled across it as if she was thrown.

Lots of stunt doubles have been injured, some with permanent damage but no one hears about it because stunt doubles aren’t famous. That’s why real big actors usually don’t do their own stunts. I loved more than half the movies listed, it was cool to see the stunts especially the Mulan one in the fighting scene with Honghui with the whole power move at the end and never knew that's how it was. I also really enjoyed the fight for “Birds of prey” like the scenes seem so real, Great Job to the actors. Movies such as “Over the moon” and “Onward” were also really amazing and beautifully animated. In the invisible man, the main actor killed her part and it was cool to watch as well.

I've been good at the jobs I've set out to get but I swear in the back of my head I'm always wondering how movies are filmed, why they choose the scenes they do, the angles, the locations and items in backdrop, how did the writers agree on the dialogue the whole thing. Maybe I should go for it. Acting seems impossible to break into but I could see myself working under a few movies and try directing my own. That would be my dream I think
