Thailand is home for several hornbill species, including the oriental pied hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris). Hornbills need big tree hollows for their nesting sites which means that they need big old trees to survive. Because there are less and less old trees existing in Thailand (and all over the world), hornbills often struggle to reproduce. The OurLand Team visited Phi Paradon in Koh Yao Noi in the South of Thailand to see how he is constantly supporting the birds finding nesting sites. Nesting boxes put in trees can be a great alternative for hornbills when they are not able to find tree hollows that are big enough. Hornbills are not only beautiful birds but also important seed dispersers and play an important ecological role. The protection of species like the hornbill is crucial for forest conservation efforts. The oriental pied hornbill also occurs in the western forest complex and even in OurLand. So we tried to get as much inspiration as possible to build our own hornbill boxes.
