As long as people are capabale of getting profit out of abusing horses, nothing will change. Only if the industry is shut down and you can only ride for fun, the horses will be fine. That‘s my honest opinion. We should not be able to make mony out of horses. No matter if we get money as award for a horse with flashy gaites or as a price for the horses performance.

I remember back in the day when I played my niche, bargain bin horsie games there was usually a disclaimer at start up that said that nothing in the game should be taken as a point of reference for actual real life horse care, stressing that it's fiction. Perhaps Star Stable would benefit from this as well. They did dodge the bullet of giving the Ardennes a cropped tail option so perhaps not all hope is lost EDIT: I do think the animation should be changed, but when has SSO ever changed an animation? The main thing that needs to change about dressage are Olympics. Judges look over techniques that riders use. Rollkur, crazy, harsh metalic gear, even improper sitting positions that put a strain on horses back, spurs - all of that is normalized. People don't want to do proper work with the horse. They don't tame horses, they brake poor animals. I've seen at least a few horses who got into my hands, who because victims of this "training". I hope people will see more wrong with this and stop Olympic riders from entering for using those techniques
@ElegantHope
@ElegantHope 3 месяца назад
it feels like so many people fail to educate themselves about the behavior and personalities of the animals they either work with or own. This happens a lot with pets like cats and dogs too where people don't recognize any body language from animals they're around. They just end up thinking they know the animal perfectly fine and then get surprised when the animal starts acting out or other bad things happen. And if strangers (or even sometimes friends or family) try to teach them otherwise there's a decent chance that person just doesn't really take the advice and either finds excuses or falls for their knee jerk reaction of feeling like they're being attacked or something.
@XMissRammsteinX
@XMissRammsteinX 3 месяца назад
@@kiberrose1229I agree with your statement, but I think the Olympics are just the tip of the iceberg. When I was 10, I was finally allowed to take riding lessons. The stable I went to had many "lesson horses", it was their whole business. And I remember we were like 5 to 8 riders in one lesson with one teacher. The horses did 2 lessons after each other most of the time. And the teaching was horrible. Sure, the teacher corrected your sitting and told you when your leg was in the wrong position, or your hands were to low and I'd day I learned riding, but I did surely not learn proper horse handling. Quantity over Quality. And the phrase I heard the most was "Just use the whip more! He's lazy". These horses were depressed and abused and I was a part of it for 10 years. I feel guilty and regret it deeply. But I also didn't know it any better. And there are so many teenagers learning to handle horses like that, so it's no wonder that a "hard hand" is seen as fine and normal in competitions.
@kiberrose1229
@kiberrose1229 3 месяца назад
@@XMissRammsteinX Olympics are one of the main things, IMO, because they are so PUBLIC. They are one of the biggest reasons why people won't stop using those techniques. The first thing that should be done - the pass of the law that FORBIDS people to use those methods under any circumstances. Riders, unfortunately, go away with so many things, basically going on a power trip. If they won't be punished properly by government, judges AND public, it won't have an effect. As a gameplay animator myself, this is why I think disclaimers at the beginnings of a game should be emphasized. It saying that this is just a game and a fantasy setting and it nowhere near promotes acutal real life practices. Because there's no way in hell that an animator would know all this... Like despite this video was super detailed an informative, I my untrained eyes can barely see any difference between a good and a bad from. We usually have extremely limited time to do an animation, and we don't have time for extensive research. When I do an animation I have two hours at best to collect reference, which is usually me typing whatever into youtube and look for the most aesthetically pleasing results to use them as a starting point. If the team doesn't have a specialist, who can correct mistakes like this, then it's a bit much to expect from the underpayed and overworked animator to become an expert in a nieche field in their free time, because in your working hours you barely have enough time to finish your animations, let alone dig yourself into the nitty gritty details. It's nice when a studio has enough resource to make an animation as realistic as they can (like Red Dead Redemption 2), but it's really not an industry standard, and in smaller studios time and money is extremely limited.
@wildlyAJ

Yeah I feel like starstable probably cut corners when they released those horses If its a smaller studio or indie dev I'd understand, they wouldn't have time or even know to put detailed research into it, but that animation was from star stable, like a really established horse riding mmo thats been running for well over 10 years so they prolly shoulda put more research behind it
@SoulDevoured
@SoulDevoured 3 месяца назад
Most people would understand that the average animator can't do this and would want the company as a whole to do better and give their animators time and resources. What most people don't understand is the crunch is usually coming from outside the company. Publishers and investors (and fans) want a product as quickly as possible as cheaply as possible. Which results in severely overworked devs. Capitalism. It's an entire social structure that needs to change. Not saying a studio couldn't push for more time and experts to get great accurate animations and it be approved but more often than not those extras come at working employees even harder.
@bookfish
@bookfish 3 месяца назад
@@SoulDevoured Man I can barely pray out my essetial plugings for Maya from the company so I can work properly, let alone get a specialist for some super specific animations. And sometimes even if you get a consultant, they have to get trough the designers often. In the company where I work, the other team made a game, what was revolving around a specific mental disorder. The developement was far in, when they decided to get a specialist. Once they were there and seen the game, they've said that this mental disorder doesn't work like this and the game's story needs to be rewritten to be accurate. Hell broke completely loose and the main designer of the game (who's idea was the story itself), thew a tantrum over the idea that they have to rewrite the story... Long story short, the game got shelved, because rewriting it from scratch, while the game was basically in early beta state (meaning that it was supoer close to get finished), was too expensive.

@@wildlyAJ IDK, World Of Warcraft is the ultimate staple in mmos, that after more than 18 years in the business, they still didn't managed to fix most of their flying animations, so their flying creatures don't flap backwards with their wing, while they are moving forward. With this I just wanted to say, that while some things might look like they should be fixed (wheter because it spreads misinformation, what may cause harm to real life animals or simply beacuse it looks like shit), 98% of the playerbase just doesn't care about it enough to raise their voice and force a change out of the company.

Honestly, even if they had an expert/specialist on the team, there's a good chance it wouldn't have changed anything in this case. Because if you were going to hire an expert without knowing anything, you'd probably go for high profile people in the industry, like a gold medalist or a judge at high level competitions. You know, the very people committing or promoting those awful practices. They wouldn't have any incentive to correct these mistakes or inspire systemic change, because they're the ones profiting off it. I just hope the developers listen to the community and make some changes retroactively

I owned a house for years as a teen and used correctly, lunge whoops and riding cross never cause any more pain than you feel when clapping your hands together hard. Lunge whips never make contact with a horse, they're meant to crack in the air behind them, and riding crops are designed to make more noise than anything else. You also don't get a lot of use from a crop if you're only ever hitting the horse with it, I mostly used mine as an added direction aid with small taps. The exception in use for me was a "popper" crop with a really wide tip, my girl hated trotting over poles and sometimes needed the loud reminder on her rump that she was working. She got her revenge though, broke into the storage area and chewed the tips off both crops we had. 😂 Funnily enough I used the remaining stick all of once as a popper and she stopped ignoring my leg squeezes lol! Horses are funny and smart enough to know when they've lost the war by winning the battle. All that said, I very rarely used a crop while riding, and never a whip, both were 90% for ground work. @Liz66.

I grew up being taught dressage on a small family owned stable in the countryside of Northern Germany, pretty much right as I was able to hold myself upright unassisted and only ever stopped due to health issues. Over 14 years I spent working with horses to the point where I was assigned "problematic" horses that no one else was bothering to pick up for training. That's how I ended up taking care of an 11 year old gelding who had a birth-defect, his left hind leg was noticeably shorter than the others. He was originally bred to be a competition horse. He was a beautiful chestnut Hanoverian (Honnoveraner) but because of his leg he was scrapped and put on a paddock with a retired show jumper. He was never properly trained or socialized when I started working with him, it was like breaking in a baby. Jumpy and overly sensitive to any and all input, he was very excited about working with people and other horses but also always ended up anxious and easy to distract. You couldn't ride him like you would any other horse i had worked with prior. The mare I had before him was a national champion I inherited from her previous owner. She was extremely responsive and willing to cooperate and relinquish authority without compromising herself. Entirely different weight class as the scared but curious little boy that just got put in my care. That gelding was a mess when I first began training with him. He would either completely overshoot or completely ignore me. Stubborn and independent as he was he would often go against my cues and jump to the side or change direction on a dime if he felt like proving a point. It took months to build up enough trust in each other to actually get along in a way that allowed for propper dressage training. We ended up incredibly in sync as we taught each other how to trust and listen. I've never had as close a bond with a horse as with him and yet I still was never able to compete with him in the small local competition, one that i had previously participated in yearly and won more than I had not. He was simply too sensitive for the competition atmosphere. We tried once and decided that it just wasn't meant to be. He just wasn't made to be a flashy fancy show horse to make judges fawn and bring home medals. Now if only one of the stables dressage teachers understood that.... While I was working on balancing out his disability through strength training and cooperation between horse and rider that crazy woman made her students who also rode him treat him like every other, healthy horse and made them force him into performing those flashy over the top maneuvers. It ended up giving him severe ticks, where he would nervously throw his head up and down at the slightest pressure in the bit, he stumbled more and more and disregarded my input out of sheer uncomfortablity. He became unfocused and suspicious of every rider and it ended up in him tripping and falling with me more than once during training. He always picked himself back up imediatly and was never seriously injured but every time it happened I was terrified. He was more unstable in his gate than ever before and every day I was fearing the time he would fall and not get back up again, break his leg and having to be put down just because of some bullshit aesthetics. I, in my at the time 16 year old glory blew up at that teacher, listing all the things that have gotten worse and worse since she picked up my gelding for her lessons and telling her to stop ruining all the work I had put in to keep him healthy and happy just just so she could stroke her own ego and superiority complex. Unfortunately i was never able to completely take him out of her lessons as she was friends with the owner of the stable and could do pretty much whatever she wanted and the gelding didn't belong to me on paper, I was only the primary caretaker with the gelding belonging to some public entity managing equestrianism in the city. For a while my parents and i played with the thought of buying him but ultimately decided against it as we did not have the money to care for a horse full time with all the extra expenses that come after food and shelter like vet bills and getting him exercised when I'm not able to due to school. Dressage to me was never about the looks. Sure it was a bonus when it looked pretty from the outside but the real value in the sport always lied within the connection between horse and rider. Nothing is more beautiful than a horse that moves naturally without pain or fear.

That was a great read, thanks for posting. I hope that gelding at least had others concerned for his well-being. I don't know very much about horses but I know a fair bit about training dogs. When you're working that closely with an animal they are not a pet, they are not a tool, they are your partner. And it very simply comes down to: either you care for your partner's health and well-being or you don't.

@@SoulDevoured YES! He became very well loved after I took him off the paddock not just by other people but the horses as well. He never lost that curious little boy personality he had since day one and made friends with another gelding called Diego at the stable. Those two became inseparable. Diego got so attached to Dostellani that he would only work if he got to work with Dostel in the same ring and sometimes even refuse certain figures if Dostel wasn't doing them as well. And at down time they would scratch each other or run around together. It was quite cute. My mom also often helped me care for Dostel, and i had a couple of friends who vouched for me when I started going against that one teacher. Especially one who's mother was also a teacher at the stable and had year long beef with the other woman as she was a serial offender in mistreating horses. My friend had to more or less physically tear that little mare away from that woman and scream in her face to knock it off. I wasn't there to see it go down but it became somewhat of a local legend and I believe they ended up buying the mare too. I miss all those people greatly and I hope that someday I can return to the sport. And I agree fully with the statement that those animals become our partners, exquestrianism is a team sport. No matter what others say, it takes two to ride. It's like clockwork, if one part is broken or damaged the entire mechanism falls apart. That's why the health of both the horse and the rider should always come first, no matter what. Horses are so sensitive to our emotions and intentions It's uncanny at times. If I'm calm, my horse will trust me. If I'm scared, my horse will go ridged. If I'm angry, my horse will shut down. There is no negotiating, It's either you temper yourself or you won't get anywhere. I find that very humbling honestly ^-^"

The jorvik pony literally tilting its head to the side and opening its mouth during a jump, once again from bit pressure. This explains why when I was taking lessons at a horse riding place I used to go to it always felt weird when they strong armed me into dressage… the horse I was riding was originally a barrel racer, and that’s what I did at first before they decided to be more “sophisticated” at that ranch. Poor guy was always so stressed and tense when we were doing dressage. I ended up quitting when they refused to let me go back to barrel racing where the horses I used actually seemed comfortable doing the runs.

From a gamedev standpoint I honestly think its just out of ignorance, as though its easy to assume from a horse game, the devs aren't necessarily horse/riding fans and are just going with what they see from casual research (and if flashy bad gait is now common in shows, that's what they'd go with). Or I might assume the team to have a "general horse expert" to whom its 'good enough' .

“I believed a lie” This is ultimately what happened in this sport. We are taught things that are nothing more than mistreatment, to the point where today, trying to change our mentality is very difficult. I was lost for a long time, no longer knowing how to behave with horses. I am lucky today to be in a club which (is far from perfect) but watches over its animals, which takes care of them and teaches you more responsible riding in harmony with them. Even today I have doubts, I hesitate, but by trusting my instinct more than certain riders, I realize that I am doing more good for the horse. maybe its because i'm spoiled by red dead redemption 2 horses which TO THIS DAY is still arguably the best horse game there is lol, but i always found it weird how star stable's story is constantly like oh you and your horse have a great connection, you and your horse are best buds, you and your horse-- it's like, weird, i think i've been riding a different horse for basically every single mission ever personally, I think a GOOD way to get these looks.. and also make them GOOD in the game, would be to allow them, but also have the horses have a tolerance level. Make it where you CAN ride in this flashy stupid way, but your horse will lower its level / buck you off / ect. Being able to LOSE friendship with your badly cared for horse would be such a cool addition to the game and make it feel much more immersive and also more subtle teach PROPER horse care to young people. Currently for the "Love between you and your horse knows no bounds!!" the horse is literally just a flesh vehicle with zero personality whatsoever, a common fault amongst horsey games red dead did such a good job with their horses that people REGULARLY don't realize that every single horse has the same AI regardless of breed, the fastest horse is only BARELY faster than the slowest horse, there is no horse 'bravery' stat so there is no 'bravest horse breed', no aggression stat so there is no "most likely to kick horse breed" or other things you might see youtube videos about. I'm fairly sure horses in RDR2 do have different personalities, but I think it's entirely RNG. therefore, the horses aren't strictly designed by their breed, but by their individual rng roll on stats. my personal favourite is the rose grey Andalusian, I remember playing through one time with one who was the baddest ass horse in the world. tried another one and it sucked it spooked at anything that moved lol so I do think there's a bit of randomness coded into their stats. the most important thing the game impresses on us, though, is that our horse is not just our ride, but our partner. we have to care for them, and the better we care for them the better we'll bond with them, and the more responsive, brave, and loyal they will be (plus in our good care they increase their fitness and stats). it's amazing that total non horse people at R* got horse dynamics better than people trying to make actual horse games.

Small note: The training method wasn't popularized by Anky van Grunsven, but her husband: Sjef Janssen. He basically introduced it to his wife as well as the entire Dutch Team. Basically making the entire Dutch team a billboard for rollkur. In the end, it's his wife that won most. But I think the distinction is important, because it shows a systematic erosion of ethics in the top dressage world. If just one rider practiced it: Well that would be bad, but training an entire team of top dressage riders this way is just plain evil.

If you want to know more: there is a "great" article in horsemagazine called "sjef Janssen explains his training system." Great because he explains exactly what his thoughts are. Not so great because of the actual content. In a nutshell: He has no horsey background, makes fun of classical dressage riders, thinks it’s stupid that people work with the strengths and weaknesses of their particular horse, calls piaffe and passage “the tricks”. (So it’s kinda funny when people describe modern dressage as a circus, because it is. It literally is trick training and not dressage) He only cares about how something “looks” and calls behind the vertical (rollkur) on the bit. Basically he is a man that thinks he knows better than everybody else. It get’s even more jarring when you piece together the time line. (Which is kinda difficult and downright impossible to do when you don’t speak Dutch), but I think it’s kind of important to show: since people can just look up videos from different time frames. 1983 - Wins a bronze medal with his team at the European championships. Individually he becomes 8th. He isn’t selected for the Olympic dressage team and sells his horse out of dissapointment. (Oron) 1990 -1991 - Becomes the trainer for Anky and short after begins a relationship with her. At the time he is riding another horse, (Olympic Bo) and places 8th. Shortly after he sells this horse. He becomes trainer of the American dressage team. 2005 - Becomes head trainer for the Dutch dressage team and trains riders like: Anky van Grunsven, Edward Gal, Hans Peter Minderhoud and Adelinde Cornelissen. 2012 - stops coaching the team. Coaches Mathias Rath (Germany) up until about 2015 with Totilas (The horse he ruined when he was still ridden by Edward and has been training since he was 6 years old). Rath says: “Ofcourse rollkur is part of the training”. Sjef states that: “He’s getting sick of Totilas constantly being injured and puts more of his efforts into other horses.” 2013 - Starts as a technical dressage manager for the Belgian team. (Domien Michiels, Larissa Pauluis, Laurence Roos) 2015 - Becomes head trainer for the Belgian Team. Clips from this era show a very different dressage, with the most horrible riding you’ve seen. 2019 - Retires

The Spanish Riding School in Vienna has a lot of good practices, like not starting training untii the horse is five years old, and having one rider pair with a horse its whole life so they know each other really well. They seem to have fallen prey to the modern ideal of the tight forced head carriage, and yoou cwn frequently see horses pulled behind the vertical or with stressed expressions. Their use of the overtight side reins also disturbs me, because side reins are unyielding pressure on the mouth which damages soft contact and proper form by creating tension in the horses neck. However, dressage was and still can be a beautiful and mutually beneficial discipline for both horse and rider. Big lick, meanwhile, is inherently cruel. There’s no salvaging it, and it was never meant to accomplish anything but to prove status. Big lick likely evolved from general saddleseat competitions. When I was younger I thought this mare must be very happy doing this, such a big animal wouldn't do something it didn't want to, right? After all, I could barely get my parent's dog off the sofa. She died very shortly after that tv aired dressage event, a paddock accident everyone was told... I now wonder. As an adult I can now clearly see that the mare was not happy, the foam in her mouth that they tried hard to never let be seen as the rider Andreas Helgstrand celebrated, the fact that her tail flicked over and over again. I think it is very important for games that boast about simulation or realisim to not mislead kids or even adults into thinking these movements are normal for horses.

Speaking from an animators point of view, I wouldnt be surprised if they referenced multiple pieces of footage with certain parts from the correct practice and other parts the incorrect pratice without even realising it. It's our job to analyse movement and convey it, but often times we end up missing important details like what you've discussed, sadly. Nordisk Games definitely needs a fact checker/expert on hand that goes over all art and animation to prevent terrible things like this! Since it can be asking a lot for an animator to be an expert on every creature they may animate, especially as they often work on many different kinds of games throughout their career (animators are often overworked/underpaid as it is) that may not have even a single horse, let alone a game specialising on them. The fact that this reveals they don't or if they do they simply don't care says a LOT.

For me that was the moment everything changed - when I first rode a happy horse. It stops beeing a fight and starts beeing an adventure with a friend and if you make a mistake you dont end up in the sand. They also made sure to have the nose at the vertical and the legs move parallel, because those are the two things most people know to look for. And since they are "correct", the whole movement should be fine, right? Wrong. There are other glaring issues, like the loss of rhythm, the toe flick, the shape of the neck with the 3rd vertebra being the highest point instead of the poll... I don't think this was done with any malicious intent on the developers' side though. They probably took all of this from the reference material they used, but then were smart enough to correct the nose line and the engagement of the hind legs.

As an equestrian myself, who does English and is currently helping *train* a horse, you are entirely correct on every point and the equestrian community applauds you :) We need better horse games to influence the next generation of riders. We need to stop allowing rolkur and behind the vertical line in dressage, and we need to fix the passage, piaffe, and extended trot. This extends past just "pixels on a screen", these are actual animals suffering because of the incompetency and greediness of big organizations and gold-medal-hungry riders. This was an another amazingly done video by you Rattle, thank you.

This is such an eye opening video. I have been skeptical of dressage for a long time now because every horse I have seen looks tense, that it came to a point where I wasn't aware there even is proper relaxed dressage that horses enjoy. This may have ignited an interest in dressage as an art form, thank you so much ❤

A little correction. The "on the bit" part is an outdated term. You do not need a bit to achieve collection. You don't even need a bridle after you train the horse properly. "Connected with the rider" or "on the hand" are more correct

I'm just happy there's not going to be saddle seat style gaits on the American saddlebred. (Because saddle seat movements can be used in really bad ways)

As a saddleseat rider, i’m disappointed. I’m aware there’s always bad apples in a discipline that ruin it for everyone, but most saddleseat riders treat their saddlebreds excellently. The raking gait is often confused for big lick. Which is why it gets a bad rap. Once again, I ride Saddleseat, my horses are treated wonderfully and aren’t forced into anything that hurts them. I wish SSO would add the racking gate to Saddlebreds, it is a natural gate for them, compare it to big lick and you can see the difference.
@mcpomeranc7563
@mcpomeranc7563 3 месяца назад
the biggest issues people have with saddleseat is how far the rider sits on the horse's back (which is damaging and painfull), and the way how to get the horse's tail to be so high up, there are two ways how to do that, either a surgery which damages how the horse's tail works, or gingering (google it if you don't know, it's terrible) most people know the differences between saddleseat and big lick, but both are still abusive
@LENAYYYYYY
@LENAYYYYYY 3 месяца назад
@@mcpomeranc7563 The humane way we make our horses’ tails look higher is just wrapping it. Almost like a ponytail, yknow how if you wear your hair high enough after awhile when you take it out your hair sorta stays that way? That’s what it’s like. Also the saddles aren’t in a dangerous spot. The saddles are in a position to not hinder the horse’s motion. Yes they are farther back but aren’t near any organs that would cause pain.
@Alphabetwillbet
@Alphabetwillbet 3 месяца назад
@@LENAYYYYYYLmao. Saddle seat is bad in itself. No need to compare it to big lick, just because one is bad doesn’t make the other better. Both are ass. You sit at the far back of the horse’s back, precisely where it hurts him. The movement of this breed in saddle seat is NOT natural. That’s not how these horses move naturally, yes they are a bit gaited, but absolutely not on the level of saddle seat. You put heavy platforms at the bottom of the shoes of the horse (not as much as big lick but it’s still a ugly thing to do), you crook their neck and you break their tail to achieve an unrealistic and painful position. Saddle seat in itself IS abusive. There’s no right way to do it. Just like there’s no right way to do horse diving, it’s not because the horse jumps by itself that it enjoys what you’re doing.
@LENAYYYYYY

@@Alphabetwillbet You’re assuming every single saddleseat rider hates their horse and just wants to win. My horses don’t wear weighted shoes or platforms (in all my years of saddleseat i’ve never seen someone have platform shoes), their tails aren’t broken, their saddles aren’t hurting them, and their necks aren’t crooked. I’m a dressage rider who isn’t going to compete in higher levels because of how messed up the sport has become. It disappoints me that the worst parts of the sport are being represented and normalized in media. The sport is supposed to be about showcasing the horses natural abilities in a way that’s comfortable for both the rider and the horse. In my experience it is very uncomfortable to ride a horse who isn’t moving in a way that’s comfortable for them. It’s not fluid and it’s hard to work with your horse if they aren’t comfortable.

Hii Rattle. I usually never comment, but after I saw your post on reddit and how negatively the people reacted, I decided to give my two cents. Many people in the comments started comparing SSO to other games, like GTA / RDR and while it's logical, for me it felt like whataboutism. Yes, they are right about comparing the two, but you're a RU-vidr talking and analysing *horse* games and not games in general, so I don't know why it was brought up in the first place. "Yes it sucks that SSO and other horse games promote and normalise animal cruelty to children, but hey, in GTA you can literally kill people, so what's the point😊". 💀💀💀 My second point, which I think is a lot more important, is awareness. People seem to forget that we as humans, but also as society have an understanding of how killing people, stealing and general violence is bad. Really bad. We judge and punish people who don't behave according to our societal rules. We understand that killing people sucks, even when we kill a person in a video game. We are able to differentiate between an actual murder and erasing a cluster of pixels. But animal cruelty is a different story, especially when it comes to horses. Horses in competitions are viewed as cash cows, as objects. Their value is determined by how much money they generate. Their physical and mental health is secondary. Equestrians, viewers, fans and the general public often don't know how animal cruelty looks like, since it got normalised heavily and often enough it doesn't get punished. I mean how would you know that rollkur exists and that it causes the horse to literally suffocate when it's an allowed practice in many countries and throughout many disciplines. That's the key in my opinion. There's no awareness, not enough knowledge and empathy for the people to know that what horse games promote shouldn't be done in real life. When we play GTA and go on a killing spree, we are aware that these things shouldn't be done, but when we play SSO and perform practices that are harmful, we aren't aware of the consequences that these practices can have in real life. Thank you for drawing attention to this topic. I love your videos

Probably no one will read this but I also thought, when they gave the icelandic horse an update, the Tölt, which is ideally a four beat movement truned into a flashy slow pace-like movement, which is also common in competition but biomechanically for real horses it is disastrous. I'm not a "video games cause violence person" but unlike shooting people, most people don't know this is harmful to the horses. They don't understand the horse's body language, or how their bodies should move. Therefore having the horses do this in a horse care game and not giving any indication that this shouldn't be performed in real life is a bad idea.

It frustrates me to no end to hear people say "Oh well it's just a game." over things like this, especially when it's a game meant for children. Children absorb a lot of info and will think things are real or true very easily, even if it's something from a video game or a TV show. Fiction can do a lot more damage than we seem to give it credit for. We shouldn't stand for abusive practices being shown and normalized in games as proper like this as children will see that and think that's how horses should be troting. I'd hate for them to end up abusing their horses by attempting this due to them being given improper information during their formative and more impressionable years.

I thought I was the only one who was seeing something strange with the Dutch Warmblood's trot. Thanks for this video Rattle and all of the people who helped, hope that some developper may come accross this, as it is already so common and sadly "normal" IRL. The dressage industry has so much things to work on and even if the mentality of people is changing, it is still degrading, with abusive/stressful behavior and bad riding becoming even more common. This industry should really change (and not only dressage, the equestrian world too). Something that I also can't believe is that for the FEI, it is impossible to do a higher level of dressage without a simple bit or bitless, so it is against the law, but abusive bits, hyperflexion, abusive gaits with the horse looking physically stressed and uncomfortable (eyes with white, too much saliva coming from their mouths and many others) is perfectly fine, and is heavily encouraged.
@bunapapaya8
@bunapapaya8 3 месяца назад
Honestly, grand prix dressage is just getting better at hiding their abusive methods from the public. They know that most people who watch dressage tests nowadays are aware of Rollkur and it being a bad thing, and so they don't show it as openly anymore as maybe 10 years ago (I have vivid memories of some awful scenes during the 2012 olympics). We also moved away from those super exaggerated movements that Totilas had. Now it's all a bit more subtle, but still very noticeably problematic if you know what to look for. Unfortunately, the vasst majority of dressage fans does not know what to look for, because not everyone has a trained eye for that sort of thing - which is fine btw, you don't need to be an expert in order to appreciate dressage. But it makes it easier for them to get away with unethical training methods and unhealthy movements. Now, about the bits used in grand prix dressage: Those are perfectly fine actually. Just regular double bits. They way they are commonly used, however, is not fine, with way too much force put onto the leverage bit. You actually see a lot more abusive bits in showjumping.
@lola_equestrian
@lola_equestrian 3 месяца назад
@@bunapapaya8 You're right. And about the bits part, I don't think I well expressed myself ; I didn't want to say that the bits used in dressage were abusive. In dressage, letting the rider have a choice in wich bit/bridle he wants to ride with during the test would be great, sometimes because another bit is better for their horse, but also if they can't use a double bit properly without hurting the horse (but in my opinion you really shouldn't ride at that level if you can't use these bits, but the riders who use them properly today aren't very common) but it is against the law, and on the other side, including other disciplines than dressage, there are abusive behaviours that exist and aren't punished by the FEI law, even if the signs of abuse are very strong ; that's what I meant. And as a showjumper, showjumping isn't all peaches and cream either. Others than the bits, there is plenty of hyperflexion in showjumping rounds, it's sad that dressage is the only one where it is talked about (we talk less about rollkur in showjumping than in dressage). That's why the equestrian world in general needs to change. Sorry if this doesn't make sense at all, English isn't my first language and I'm pretty sure I forgot to re-read that last part in the original comment 😅

Very impressive video. I think the whole "they're just pixel horses" argument, which is already debunked by the fact that this is a game intended for easily-influenced children, can be further broken down by simply thinking about *how* these games are developed. The animation artists aren't just watching a single video and going "yup, looks about right, lets base it off of this one video". Animation artists watch MANY videos from different angles to get it *just* right. It's a sign of just how widespread these practices have become.

It's a different thing when you make a game directed towards adults, even then disclaimers are important, and make a game for children. The agrument that "These are just pixels, no one is hurt" is correct, but still not valid. When you create entertaiment directed towards children and younger people, you need to keep in mind, that no matter if you adertise your content as "Educational" or not, children will try to learn from it. It's what kids and teens simply do as a part of their development. When I was learning how to write stories for children, our teacher explained why so many bullies and villains in cartoons that are meant to be irredeemable are ugly and extremely stupid. It's not always because the writers are lazy, it's often because the story is for kids, and giving bad people anything kids can relate to or like can trigger "mirroring". Not sure how to translate it, it's when kids see something either cool or relatable in a fictional character and began to try to achieve it. I really hoped someone will bring this topic up without the stupid "Oooh, but it's pixels, lolz, maybe I'm overdramatizin teehee!!", because I need to admit, that I as a deadass adult wanted to learn these tricks because they looked cute and silly, but my riding instructor told me that there is no way, because it's abuse and they are not going to do that to their beloved horses. If I had a different instructor, who wold just wanted my money and didn't care about the horses, then probably I would have to end the training after seeing the harm I'm doing, and would drive into guilty. Also, this game is LITERALLY about building bond and trust with your horse. Bitless bridles would make so much sense for the plot, even the aesthetic of the game itself! Raising and training horses without the need to use force, just trust and friendship between two species.

I want to add, you can actually achieve all those dressage goals without a bit and force as well. I know people whom managed that, also had lessons from a very good centered riding instructor, all bitless. I learned from her the bit was invented for/during war, people noticed the horse then turned it's head quicker, not that it was for the good. About centered riding, it also focuses on the dressage there being for the horse, to help it carry it's rider in a healthy way. It also focuses on you as a rider, on feeling the movements. In my first I had to focus on feeling how the horses head moves back and forth, how belly goes in and outward, how the hindlegs sort of make a circle. It was so lovely, interesting and connective. Had to stop because of money but would love to take such lessons in the future again. To add, I'm so glad your'e sharing this, learned a few new things too. You can't expect parents to know everything about everything all the time and most parents won't give a damn about a pretty horse game. If you are making a horse specifically for dressage, then you should be ensuring that it is promoting proper and good riding, not just flashy. If this horse was just another horse, and they had made original movements, then fine. But because they used SPECIFICALLY bad riding, not made up riding, it means kids will see this then see it on the circuit and think it's good. I loved this video. I’m so glad you spoke about it. Almost every gen 3 horse in SSO are based on bad gaits. I also want to add that bits were created specifically for the quick submission of the horse. People knew they hurt, they knew and that’s exactly why they created them. Also, school moves were invented to better move the horses in the war after inventing firearms. Because the purpose of the horses wasn’t to run into people anymore, they had to find another purpose. It turned out to be dodging bullets (though it’s said that those moves probably weren’t used in that chaotic context but still gave humans a boost in their ego to control the animal like that). A form of piaffé was used in wars to keep the horse on moving, so they could gallop any instant. Everyone knew the bits hurt, everyone had a purpose to use horses. Nowadays, we don’t have excuses and we shouldn’t keep on hurting them for the sole purpose of entertainment. Thank you for your work, Rattle. It was a great and necessary video❤

As an artist and animator I can see the argument that the flick and other exagerated movements could be abstractions to sell a movement but based on the way all other animations are approached its clear the style is meant to be documentary. Reguardless of why these references were chosen I don't think its at all unreasonable to expect better. thank you for the insight!

Dressage needs to go back to being FOR the horse, not using the horse for dressage.

Thank you for covering this in such an accessable way! All of the thorough visual examples really helped! I wasn't aware of this problem, but I'm glad I am now so I can watch out for and not support this kind of abuse. I don't think I'll ever have the money to actually be able to ride or train horses, but if I did id love to do dressage... If it was actually a way to work together and build trust and companionship and help exercise the horse. Flashiness should never ever ever come at the expense of the partner you are asking to work with you

This! I also feel like a lot of star stable horses lack hind end impulsion and don’t track up properly. I thought it was a little funny that we got bell boots, which are often used for an overtracking horse, when lots of horses just barely track up

That is funny. Bellboots have a particular purpose, and it was not "for the look," not to be a matchy matchy accessory, not to be like jewelry on a human.

@@jewelweed6880 yes! My horse irl wears bell boots all the time, otherwise he clips his front hooves with his hind hooves and rips his shoes off in the field when he’s turned out. They do look cute though, his little bracelets 😂

Unfortunately I think what's happening is animators just base their work off videos they find online, and most videos display wrong practices
