The romance with yong junhyung wouldn’t have had as much backlash as it did if he wasn’t involved in the burning sun scandal, the facts make sense, they’ve known each other for a long time so their romance kind of makes sense, but he’s also the ex of Goo Hara who was Hyuna’s friend who tragically took her own life and he was also an accomplice to the biggest sex trafficking scandal in Korean history, like that’s just a slap in the face to her dead friend and to all of the people who idolized her as a feminist, she used and abused her image and now that shes lost a lot of fans she’s paid the price.

I’m tired of the narrative that Pentagon needed Dawn or that he was what made the group special. It wasn’t Dawn’s absence that hurt the group (although he did bring a unique vocal color and attitude) so much as the controversy itself. First of all, Cube officially dropped HyunA and Dawn _just_ before Pentagon’s comeback, which affected the public perception of the comeback, and as a result they lost momentum. The song was also clearly meant to be a Dawn-centered song, which made his absence glaringly obvious. Second, Hui and Yuto also had dating scandals around the same time as HyunA and Dawn, again harming the group’s reputation especially among fangirls. Third, Cube just kept mishandling Pentagon and getting in the way of future success. They kept Yanan on hiatus seemingly because he was still hanging out with Dawn (and later because of health issues) and the group seemed unstable because of it. Fourth, after Pentagon lost popularity because of the scandal & mismanagement, 4th gen groups were starting to pop up and make new waves in the k-pop space, making it infinitely harder for Pentagon to stay relevant. Sorry for the rant, but I’m tired of them being dragged into the conversation.

Personally, I think what also made people admire Hyuna so much before her current relationship is the fact that she has an alternative personal style (idk how to describe it but maybe sexy kitsch?) that subverts the norm of what you not only see other kpop idols have in their personal closets but also how South Korea's conformist and conservative society expects people to present themselves physically.

As another comment mentioned about Pentagon I think people really misunderstand Korean fandoms. One major thing that makes people turn away from a group are controversies. Even with great music, talent and effort it was very hard to recover from such a long and big controversy as it was 2018. And still they did recover actually starting to win music shows after Shine selling more and more again. It might not have been viral hits after Shine but a organic and sustainable growth in sales and streams comparatively good to the other male groups in the same debut year. However after Cube now in the last 3 years did a big failure in investment into the metaverse they lost an extreme amount of money which led to a big halt of promotions of almost all of their artist besides G-Idle and over working them since they bring the most money for the least effort that Cube currently puts in because of the lack of money. Its no wonder in the last 9 month more than a dozen artists left the company since everyone knows the bankruptcy is on the horizon. This again forced Pentagon in a long hiatus after a stable growth till 2022 before.

Unfortunately in conservative countries the feminist movement is more about individualism and doing whatever the hell you want without consequence which is a major reason the movement hasn't gained as much traction as it did in the west. However as I said the feminism brand in the west is very different and this is an obviously non-feminist action. I'm gonna be that person. I never liked Hyuna even since her first debut. IMO she always had an image of a try-hard and attention seeker, also couldn't stand her voice post Wonder Girls. In my observations over the years, people like that would throw other women under a bus and try to fight for male validation/attention. People were so smitten by her bc attractiveness and her provcative image, and some people around thought I was just a hater. But like my hunch about Ariana Grande, I was right. Not a girl's girl. I also feel like what makes it worse as someone who's been a fan of hers from the very beginning is how often she would also sit there and talk about wanting the industry to be better for younger girls. She was one of the female idols alongside other ones like BoA or IU who was very publicly talk about how hard it was being an artist at such a young age and how their wasn't always the greatest things happening to and or around them and how they want it to be safer for younger female idols like she was one of the first idols to sit there and speak up about new jeans and be like she hopes that they're surrounded by a company and people who are looking out for them and have their best intentions in mind because she knew exactly what it was like to be at the age of like 14 15 and haveadults and people around you who only see you as nothing more than a product and dressing you and having you act however they want it even if you were underage so it's like very weird to go from sitting there and basically dying on that Hill cuz she got backlash for that for a while from some of her fans while other ones were totally here for speaking up cuz again she does this all the time to then dating this man and now getting married to him. It's so sad to see the downfall of so many idols I used to look up to. This has honestly made me take a loong break from following any like I used to at 17-18 years old.
