Same!!! I figured since he got so close they had to be the fake ones. I had a long hair cat catch on fire on a candle during a black out and now I'm forever paranoid (she was fine, didn't even notice and was more confused on why her mum was upset). But then again, I've also had cats lose whiskers because they sniffed the oven while it was open before. v_v

I've been watching your channel for sbout ten years, it was my introduction to seeing someone outside Japan talk about their daily life and experiences there. That was the motivation for me to finally visit the country. Thanks for continuing to post videos. Also, to the person asking about moving to Japan in their 40's - there is a channel called Chani Japan which deals with that. She's an Australian woman who moved to Wakayama in her late 40's and has been there a little over a year now. Her videos show her daily life, explaining the benefits and challenges involved. She definitely shows that it's not too late to make a big move if you are middle-aged as long as know what you're getting into and are prepared.

The fact you did this video like, 2 weeks after my partner and I started researching and talking about moving to Japan is insane. Your videos, along with Tokyo Llama, Tokyo Lens and Anton In Japan, have been so very helpful in looking at where to look for a house, looking at cultural differences as well as looking at the requirements to move. My fiance and I recently went to Japan and we were basically refused service at torikizoku. It had just opened for supper and there weren’t many other people in the restaurant and the hostess was trying to tell us that they were too full to serve us so we took the hint and left. But they obviously weren’t too full to serve the people that came in right before us and right after us. I’d always heard stories about that, but I never thought it would happen to me. It kind of left a bad taste in our mouth for the rest of the night.

I moved here at 32 and yes it was pretty easy because I had a career, masters degree, money saved, some limited Japanese, and imho most importantly; friends in Japan and a bit of a life in Japan already. It was very easy to integrate and expand my social sphere because I wasn't starting from scratch in Japan. Hell I even had a wife initially but that fell to pieces for reasons from before we moved. 2 years in and I cannot get used to banking here. ALL of the banks are a decade minimum behind the modern British banks (eg; Starling).

I honestly feel something that a lot of people don't talk about is people who tend to be able to move to Japan with ease are people who come from good house holds. Supporting family, lived in a house, lots of opportunities. If you grew up in poverty it's near impossible to have a chance to move to japan.

Yeah, most people have supportive families or rich families. But it is likely possible for you too, unless you're living in a hut in a developing country.. If you watch, Sharla's family certainly isn't rich by Canadian standards. You need to make some sacrifices and save money. You can't be a video game collector or restaurant frequenter, for example. You also need a college degree as Japan doesn't let many low skilled workers in on visas. It's possible, tho, my friend. Just make a goal and stick to it

@@UnseenOct It's not that simple. Some of us are living pay check to pay check making it impossible to save up enough to even cover the expensenes that it takes. I have a bachelors, and many skills in programing, law and design, And I could get a job if I aimed for it, but that means learning Japanese, and finding a way to afford enough rent for a month, plus the plane ticket, plus food and if you aren't' apart of a government program very difficult to find a place to live. Sharla didn't come from rich, but she came from middle class in a country with decent human rights. In America nah if you start poor it's almost impossible to get out.

People have it easy when they speak fluent English and are born in first world countries. That in itself is a privilege with many many opportunities. Most of these visas and working holidays only accept you if you have at least one of the two. I honestly feel people don't talk about the privileges of having both... Either way, Sharla put in the hard work and sacrifices required to move abroad and live her dream life. It's inspiring to see her journey because I see more people making excuses for not taking any action at all.

@@luckylockelamora yep 100%. If you're from an English speaking country you can at least move to Japan to work as a teacher with ease. People often say "just move abroad!!" Say it because they're clueless about the struggles of a person who is not from a first world country. And those people are from either the US or any developed country.

Sharla, I have watched you for about 5 years. I am a 62 yo Australian who when I was 18 and living in a small town was wanting to travel overseas for a couple of years. O was shy then and instead I moved to Melbourne. I have visited several Asia countries in the last 15 years. 2 week in Tokyo 10 years ago. I would love to be able to see more of Japan but circumstances don't allow that. Seeing all the places through you, chris, Joey and aki amongst a few is helping. I say to my children and young freinds, if circumstances ever allow go and travel. My youngest came to Japan with me. Both girls I took to Sabah. The world is out there to be enjoyed. My (probably unpopular) advice for living long-term in Japan is to marry a Japanese. If you can't be the privledge group, you can marry the privledge group and benefit from their privledge. Instant elimination of problems renting apartments, getting cellphone contracts and loans etc, visa and PR is so much easier, having a Japanese last name makes so many things easier. Obviously the trick is to find someone you actually want to be married to, lol.

Caution: Japanese women are a different breed - and divorce is high, even among Japanese couples. To anyone thinking of a Japanese spouse, one tip is to find one that's traveled/lived in your own country ("Americanized" in my case).

I might have been unlucky about not letting me in into restaurants. First trip to Japan 16 years ago I was not allowed to enter a restaurant in dougen-zaka street in shibuya and last year on my second trip I was not allowed to enter the same night in two different restaurants in the center of Hiroshima 😅

シャーラさんは日本生活長いだけじゃなく日本在住外国人RU-vidrとしても長いですよね。私はRU-vid初期の頃 kerokerokerorin さん　という方の配信をよく見てました。多分　kerorin さんは最初の日本系外国人配信者じゃないのかと思います。シャーラさんはその後くらいに始められて当時よく見てました。シャーラさんが他のミーハーな外国人RU-vidrと違って素敵だなと思えるところは東京や大阪といった大都会じゃなくて東北の自然が好きで東北を拠点に活動されているところです。本当の日本の良さは東京や大阪といった大都会じゃなくごくありふれた日本の田舎に存在していると思うからです。今はインバウンドが信じられないくらい増えた日本ですがシャーラさんのように長く日本に住んでらっしゃる方が発信する声ってとても大事だと思いました。

100% on Harajuku. After Covid it has really gotten sad. Lots of the neat cafes we used to hit up, and so much stuff isn't as chill. The area you mention was certainly the area more chill and had much more friendly shops.

It’s so funny, I just had a conversation with my Japanese husband about sweet potatoes yesterday. They’re really different here and while I love them, I still miss the ones back home! I cope by cooking Japanese ones with soy sauce and sugar lol they can’t be compared to those sweet orange potatoes, but delicious recipe that takes seconds to make! I also can’t believe I’ve followed you for about 10 years and that you’ve been here for 20! I moved to Japan five years ago and you and your videos definitely helped me make my move smoother! Thank you for the video. My daughter is moving to Japan next week on a cultural visa (she will stay minimally 2 years). Now my challenge is to see how often I can visit on a visitors visa. She did get approved for an apartment last week and she is bringing her small dog (who has also been approved).

I went to Koyasan on my first trip to Japan last October and it was incredible! The night tour of the cemetery was an unforgettable experience. It’s kind of a trek to get up there but totally worth it.

Yes, Koya-san is stunning. Went there in autumn, can't recommend it enough. Next time I think I will stay for two nights because one was just not enough.

As a former resident of Okinawa (current Tokyo resident) my favorite time to visit the islands is winter. No typhoons, few tourists, less humidity, still lush green and amazingly beautiful. Unless you plan to scuba dive there's no better season than winter in Okinawa!

I've been to Koya-san and it was the most amazing place I've ever seen (I stayed at a temple and got up really early to join the monks' morning ceremony and I had the rest of the cemetery to myself for a few hours)

I'm so happy for you, being comfortable in both countries. I will say that sweet potatoes are absolutely influenced by the soil and climate they are grown in. Much like horseradishes, onions, and apples.

Public toilets are definitely the best in Japan. Even shady little bars have the cool washlets. There was a point where I would use the toilet every time I went to a station just because.

2:05 no, you dont need permanent residency to get a bank loan for a car or a house. But only some banks offer loans to foreigners and in my experience, the interest rate will be a bit higher than it would be generally (i assume this is because foreign status is regarded as a risk since you could easily leave Japan and just bail on your loan). I know because a while ago, I was looking at buying a Sekisui home and the agent actually called the bank to find out if we could get a mortgage and was told yes. And we did get a loan for a car but had to go through our bank rather than directly through the dealership. Also, thanks for sharing about Nakasendo! It looks like something I'd love to do when my girls are old enough
