Thanks Mike. Good to know since I to travel about a hundred miles to the closest vw wrench. Pretty rare guys around here.

Great info. I've always been good about lashing the valves. I haven't been good about torquing the heads... Gotta add that to the checklist.

I called my old boss and he corrected me on one item. You should also turn your valve train over and look at the rockers to see if the adjuster is wearing through the case hardened tip. The tip on there should not be pitted or worn through. Only the tip of the adjuster is case hardened. once they wear thorough the adjuster should be replaced. and YES HEAD BOLTS COME LOOSE........They do this because air cooled engines run hotter than water cooled engines. and the constant heat change from hot to cold causes this to happen. very important to check the torque on those bolts. We used to have customers come in with loose heads. and usually once they got loose they were buying an engine because of the hammering of the head on the studs. This could cause case savers to pull. Today with cases being so expensive and the cost of a rebuild as high as it is best to check those torques. Head temps over 300 degrees is normal on a VW so they come loose. Beware.

Good morning Mike, ☀️ and yes I know what a loose head sounds like, I have seen it many time. I was merely stating that on my own personal builds I have never come across it. You're still awesome 😎😂💪👍🖤

What are your thoughts on the swivel foot adjusters(also called elephant foot). I get mine from Gene Berg...or used to. You will need to shim out the rocker shaft to get the proper adjustment range on the screws. I have no proof they are better, but the design just seems better than the stock design.

@@ocavant I use them when I need to or have to use lash caps. Swivels are better than lash caps. sometime the caps crack. If your cam is not too big you can use the stock ones just fine as long as you dont have stainless valves. then you NEED lash caps.

@@rickstine7107 by the time you hear the head loose it is usually too late. Check them to prevent them from coming so loose you cant hear them. Believe me you probably will get a 1/4 turn out of at least 1 bolt.

Great video! I’ll be checking the torque from now on … didn’t know that was a thing!

Yea My boss made us do it on every car. at home i did it every other valve adjust. We stopped hearing cars driving around with loose heads.

@@Mikefngarage It really does not take that long, and imo it adds longevity to a motor. With that said, doing just the studs under the rocker, might lead to an imbalance seeing as you are not torquing ALL the studs, only the 4 under the rocker shaft. Not sure how big a difference that would make??

LOL! "this right here...is a torque wrench"🤣

My late father was a Volkswagen mechanic at Volkswagen and service manager at western Pennsylvania vw dealership he went by the factory service manual also used the greenbbook with out guess work.

Ya might want to mention there are different notch marks cut into pullys that are for different degrees BTDC. Not every motor/distributor is to be timed at that first V notch. Some are even timed ATDC in the later "smog" era cars. People should get hold of the book "WITHOUT GUESS WORK" for all the minutia. Also, I did not hear you say adjust them COLD...maybe you did. Lastly, I always make sure the rocker is tight against the pushrod. I've had them stick where I thought it was supposed to be, but the rocker was not all the way at the end of its arc. The adjustment I made was incorrect and way too loose.
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage Год назад
Yea I was thinking about that there are too many pulleys. They need to refer to their manual for which timing mart is TDC. there are about 5 different pully or so. I think there are some without timing marks at all.

the biggest point was to get them to check the head bolts. Many people even some who have commented dont retorque the heads and they dont think they need to.

@@Mikefngarage Agree. Once they get loose, like you pointed out, that bouncing head will really accelerate stud/insert pulling.

Mike I think you're an awesome dude and extremely knowledgeable about VWs but this one time I have to disagree. I have never in my life ever had to retorque heads on anything I personally built.
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage Год назад
Really.....Do you know what loose heads sound like? Maybe you have loose ones now and dont know they are. Honestly pull those suckers and check. you will be surprised I bet there are at least 1 loose one. Once they come loose and you hear it, unusually pulling a stud. or case saver soon after. We saw this a lot until we started retorquing heads. did this after every rebuild 500 miles. and the boss made us do this on every valve adjust. That head bolt on mine was loose.....yup it happens.
@ocavant
@ocavant Год назад
Are all your builds on AL cases? Every single old mag case motor I have ever seen needed retorquing periodically. They will go a long time before you notice any real difference, but retorquing will definitely add longevity to an older motor. At least that has been my experience. Most never think to do this and imo this is why the studs pull out of mag cases, even on stock motors.

@@Mikefngarage same happends on my 1974 bug, one nut on the left came loose and a tiny little bit of oil came between the head and cylinder number 2. i tighten it up, adjust the valves and make a test ride. No drips anymore :)

@@wimnijs9029 best to check them every other valve adjust also look at the adjusters to see if any are worn out. they get pitted. then you need to replace them.
