Thanks for noticing! I can’t help myself…which is why these videos take a while to make :)

You should probably mention that your valve adjusting lugs are not the stock ones. Yours have Allen heads, while the stock ones are slotted for a standard screwdriver. You've also got the solid spacers between the rocker arms instead of the stock springs. That doesn't directly affect the valve adjustment, but it does look different. Since I have stock aluminum pushrods on my engine, all the valves should have clearance when the engine is at TDC. So an easy way to determine if a cylinder is on TDC is if its flywheel mark is lined up *and* both rocker arms have some slack on them. If you're keeping up with your adjustments, the clerarances will not close up completely so this is a good indicator. The biggest pain in the butt about adjusting 914 valves is getting your hands and your tools into the right places for the adjustment. I can't even begin to imagine how you could show that, because you'd also need room for a camera...

I like your Allen head adjusters instead of having to use a right angle screwdriver. You should be using the angled feeler gauges instead of straight ones. Use your thumb and forefinger to hold the individual feeler gauge so you can feel a slight drag when adjusted.

Thanks for the note. Angled feelers are def the way to go when the engine is in the car....

I had the 73 2.0…I found 6 and 8 feeler gauges with a 45 degree bend on the end…made this easier.

Another good one Ian! Gonna miss you at Hayfields for the spring driving back east. Hope all is well out there. All the best from your engine mount borrowing friend, John.

Ian, thanks very much for all of these videos! They're so well done and so well presented; priceless. Just bought a 75 914 1.8 project car and will be watching these over and over again.

You should let people know to do this with the engine cold. Let it sit for an hour after running it and then adjust your valves.

Well, that's all good and well. How do you adjust the valves with the engine in the car
@IanKarr

The same way. Just from a little more below. You can do it!
@BuddyCoopers

Do you have to remove the engine to adjust the valves? Because there is no room zero room to do it in car
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 8 месяцев назад
You definitely don’t need to drop the engine to adjust valves. It’s tight in there, yes, but there’s enough room to get your hands and tools in.
