5 steps: 1. Lean on resources you already have. 2. Apply Everywhere. 3. Be open to cloud adjacent roles >> Move up in the same company. 4. Be smart with your money. 5. Network, Learn and grow. Be part of a community.
0:00 Intro 0:43 Lean on resources you have 1:46 widen the pool of places you are applying to 2:03 Correction: I said "I didn't even go to high school here, I was living in South America and did 2 semesters, then dropped out" I forgot to say *of college. Yes, I did graduate high school, then I did two semesters of college then dropped out. 3:01 Be open to cloud adjacent roles, just because "cloud" isn't in the role title doesn't mean you won't get cloud experience 4:40 Move up instead of out? 4:50 Be smart with your money, later on, it helps if you need to take risks in your career 5:42 network, grow, start a blog, keep studying, start a youtube, document your journey
Nice one, thanks. I have a question tho or I need some guidance from you. Am currently on a path to become a full stack web developer, but I have no college degree. So I wanna ask how were you able to prepare your CV and portfolio without having college degrees and use it to apple for jobs? Your reply would be much appreciated, thanks!
You already answered what would've been a question at around 2:03. But when you were applying for jobs in addition to your great interviewing I was wondering how & what you did to have companies consider you (b4 & after the interview) even though there was lack of experience. Also, considering if they asked why you dropped out of college and your response to that. #WomanInTech #WomenInTech
im so inspired by your journey....i have been interested in the Cloud industry for awhile. i currently work on the help desk and im so ready to move into a different area of IT....but its always even more of a pleasure to see more women in the cloud industry...thank you for your video on this!
You are quite an inspiration..even I started as a help desk engineer..and now working as technical manager in data centre..now focussed on public cloud..thanks for sharing these tips..
Thanks a lot for sharing your tips and journey. I really liked what you said about rejection - "Becoming comfortable with rejection is skill set on it's own" wow.. Wish you all the best in your journey.
The part on 4:00 onwards - where you might not have dependency, but there are many who are in a similar position like you, do not make use of that to their advantage. Thank you for being sincere on this specific part and the video. It motivates.
Very helpful tips. "Becoming comfortable with rejection is a skillset on its own" .- Gwyneth Cloud Engineer. The area on also humbling yourself to take on cloud adjacent roles before you eventually land the actual cloud one cant be overspoken enough about - Use it as your foundation to getting more off-the-clock time in the company to see how the folks in that cloud role that you want to do, function and if that is still the type of role you'd be willing to fall into.
Really appreciate your full disclosure and real ness, I’m taking the leap into iT infrastructures aws & gcp architectures and feels like a mind field but I think the time is now... so thank you 🙂 you have given me a definite deciding decision..
I've been watching your videos and I'm absolutely inspired by your journey. I'm 33 years old and looking for a career change after working in Tech Sales for 5 years.
Thank you for being part of 100 days of cloud :) Needed it! Also, thanks for calling out that you got into cloud at an opportune time. Your path will be different from those just starting to get their hands cloudy (like me)-- more competition, skill set needs to be more competitive, etc...
Thank you so much for your wisdom! I really appreciate it! I just checked out your live stream interview with Du'An Lightfoot and you dropped so much great information that folks just coming into I.T. and folks like me that have been in the game for a long time can learn from and use! Peace & Blessings
My mother is peña too. From Puerto Rico, originally Chicago. Her dad's name was Pedro Peña. She had many older brothers and sisters that she didn't grew up with. One was named Luis peña, he cooked or was a chef. I say that, because you have those peña eyes.
Hi Gwyneth, You have a great personality, good communicator and it was great to watch this video and get listen to your tips. I've been working for a long time and I think there is an X factor. Being able to connect to people and have them like you and want to work with you. You definitely have that in addition to all of your technical skills.
Hello friend, thank you for those kind words, I feel like in tech we get so stuck up on the technical skillset. I wanted to create a space where I could just talk to people :) I am glad you watched this video and hope your 2021 is going well!
Hey thanks for your video! I'm trying to get into cloud cybersecurity, and currently I work as an entry level AWS admin. I'm hoping to get AWS certified soon and move on up the ladder. I really appreciated that you mentioned to move up, not out. I feel impatient sometimes in trying to attain my goal, but I just gotta keep on working towards my degree and certifications. I'll get there eventually. Awesome video, seriously. Thanks
Thank you Gwneth! I have a friend who is a mechanical engineer, he is interested in switching to a career in Cloud Computing, this is exactly the kind of videos he need. I will send him this link. Keep creating such great videos! Cheers and Regards from Sydney.
Miss Pena-Siguenza is a hustler. She worked hard. She put in overtime, worked on weekends, and she became a cloud engineer with no college degree. This is the type of person that creates results, not excuses. I am an IT program manager. I love engineers like Miss Pena-Siguenza; hard worker with a positive attitude.
Great topic 👍 I'm heading into that road, and I'm glad the my team is helping to transition to Linux sysadmin/engineer or cloud AWS engineer. Wish me luck and I don't have any IT background or computer related too.
@@ashfaqueshaikh2881 yes I did, I got a job last December and now I'm starting working in January funny thing is I don't have any Cloud certification or background but the company will train me to be a cloud engineer specifically azure cloud however as of right now they hire me as a Linux system admin so I'm very happy. But to be honest I went to an online school and trains me to be a Linux system admin with no college degree needed. They help me from scratch from learning the foundation, to getting the certification RHCSA(Red Hat Certified System Administrator) and provided me an internship. It's very hard to look for a job without experience because of the competition, it also depends how good you are in interview.
100%♥️ Great tips - and I'd like to emphasise, as I am in a similar role and background in terms of education and career path: you don't need a degree.
@@alexandruvasi5877 hi i reaad a post on reddit where people were saying no one hires a cloud engineer without the person having a previous work experience in I.T like help desk or sys admin. I want to hear your opinion, can i self learn and get into cloud or i need to land an I.T job like help desk before i transition into cloud.
@@Oche923 That depends on the company usually if is a junior cloud engineer job and they are willing to teach people then is much simpler to get that job without the experience such as myself. My personal advice to you is to build a project in the cloud put it on your resume and you might get lucky 😉 who knows. Last but not least I know company's look for previous experience but not always is the case just show them you can do that job an you get the chance to work for them
I was about to continue my bachelor in medicine, but opportunities brought me into a service desk position, and here still I am, growing and learning. Maybe I can expertise later in healthcare big data or something like that...
@Mohamed Samir well I work as a Network Admin. I was already working in Networking when I first heard of cloud. That will be my next move but my current job wants me to get encor next. I already have CCENT.
I was so confused and had lots of headache this week while researching on the best guide to transitioning to a cloud career 😭 And then boom, I am seeing this channel 💃, followed you on most socials already and will be starting the 6 months learn to cloud next week 💃 Thanks a lot for all you do
recently got a job as an SDET which I like.. but I have an obsessive mind and I am really liking Cloud Engineering, got that membership on cloud guru and now learning lol
your content is DOPE af. No ramblings just straight to the point. Glad i found you. Im in a similar situation. About to finish my CompTIA A+ and i heard of a company that is hiring like crazy and paying to train Cloud engineers. Im like hell yea... Whats a Cloud Engineer do. lol. As my personality goes I'm interested in complex problems and creative solutions so I'm wondering if this applies to this field.
Thank u for sharing ur experience. I am in Data science from several years. After watching ur video. I want to learn AWS and get AWS machine learning certification. Love u from India.
What kind of jobs should I look for after getting my first AWS certification? I want to make a career change and want to know where's the best place to enter the industry as a newbi wanting to learn
You are lucky that you gotten your MCSE because Microsoft gotten rid of all of their legacy certs now replaced with all cloud certs like Azure etc. No more MCSA and MCSE as they are obsolete.
Thank you for telling us your story ,And also stressing the fact that you do not always need to apply for your job position direct but a position that could lead to your job position. I'm currently a computer science student ,left with one failed module to get my degree and would like to know from your past experience if its important for me to look for work now or focus more on my studies (Age 24).
Hi Gwyneth. Thank you so much for this. I have no IT experience or CS degree, but definitely want to get my certifications. Which platform did you use to study and earn your certification? I see various options like A Cloud Guru, AWS, but trying to see which would be more helpful to someone like myself who doesn't have any tech background. Thank you so much :)
Hey there, so when I was getting started, I used A Cloud Guru and Linux Academy. DISCLAIMER, I now work for A Cloud Guru, I think we have great content. You could always sign up for a free account and check out some of the free courses and see if you like it before paying for a subscription. I don't have much experience using any other learning platform, besides Microsoft Learn which is free and great for Microsoft content :) Much luck to you and welcome to the cloud world.
Great video ! Very helpful. How long did it take to you since you started learning about cloud until you felt that you were ready to apply for cloud jobs ?
I’m on that process now. Learning cloud and just need that hands on training. How do you identify what career to take within the cloud environment? I come from a Service Desk Agent to some Project Management and now as a Major Incident Manager.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! SUPER HELPFUL!!! DO YOU RECOMMEND STARTING IN HELP DESK WHEN NO EXPERIENCE? I HAVE A BACHELORS IN IT WITH A CYBERSECURITY UNDERGRADUATE, JUST ASKING...LOL THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Awesome video i just started studying IT and i hope to get into the cloud. Studying A+ right now is that enough to get on the helpdesk to break into the industry?
Nice work u had done in the video and i think it will be helpful for me to pursue my dream career but still have my doubts about which cloud service (AWS/Azure/GCP) would be reliable for beginners to learn and get a job in cloud areas. i'am currently learning Azure will this be better for me get recruit in MNC companies?
I'm a mechanical engineering student and I want to learn cloud engineering as a part time job. Should I continue cos I don't want to quit Mechanical Engineering
Starting trading crypto in 2017 and have become enamored with the idea to be able to build code as a career. My current career has nothing to do with either. Where do I start?
Don't say that all you need is attitude. I had no degree I kept changing jobs from working as labour rental sales agent Uber driver taxi driver working in prison.. but I had a passion for IT I one day made a nice cv with all the It stuff that I learnt from RU-vid etc applied for jobs .. thst didn't land a job I went and downloaded a static website about cv bought domain and voila landed a job interview.. and just after two days for the interview which was for help desk I was offered level 1.5 position.. :)
Highly depends on the company. From personal experience: - deploying infrastructure - automating tasks with some sort of scripting language - responding to any alerts - assisting on building out new projects
Someone help me??🥺 I been taking cloud computing free course on simplilearn I passed and got my certificate of completion and I like it but the next update course is 1,400$ like nooo that’s outrageous do y’all know any free program 100% or did y’all have to pay? I just invested serious time learning all this I feel like it gonna go to waste , how did you guys go succeed in cloud computing without paying ridiculous prices I just want to do this for free 😭 school super expensive for no reason lol
