This is my story. It's also probably yours. Whatever happened to that intensely creative person we once were and how do we get back to being that way again?

Your videos are immersive. I'm so inspired by your message, it's transformational! The dark ages of adolescence, yep can relate to that! 😀 3:00 This is true, that pressure to produce excellence, it's devastatingly fear provoking and makes it so difficult to cut through it and just love the process to create rather than produce! So we end up putting it off for a long time or not doing it at all. 'Lets get back to playing!' I, like many other people watching this video really needed to hear this message, thank you, thank you , thank you Danny Gregory! xxx

Living the post married life has made me think about who I was before a wife, kids, and career formed my identity. I was an artist all my life until high school. The guidance counselor banned me from the art program, because I made a D. Although I was the best artist in grade school and junior high, I was banished from what I loved. Then life got in the way. I discovered punk rock, skateboarding, and checked out. I barely made it out of high school because I didn't care. After all these years I have returned to art because it is the most authentic understanding of my self. Your videos bring tears to the eyes. I feel like I have returned from exile.

This feels like it could be my story too. Innocence, then 'failure' and forbidden, followed by fear and loss - leading to living a life that was genuine in my attempts but inauthentic and empty in how it felt. It took me a full mental breakdown and being admitted into a psych hospital to rediscover art. I still get scared and I still feel frozen and incapable sometimes, but it's no longer something completely out of reach. I'm glad you've found your way back too.

I don't get it. Art should be for anyone. Who cares if you don't draw and paint in the accepted way. I went to art school and felt traumatized because if you didn't relate to the way the teacher worked, most times they'd be very critical of what I did. And I got worse and worse and didn't have the confidence to do anything. So I abandoned art. Just the thought of it gave me anxiety. But I started sketching in my 40's and never stopped. When I retired I finally was able to take it up again. I found a teacher I was simpatico with and am gaining confidence again.
@carlaeskelsen

I think I just found four people who would understand me if I talked about my art anxiety. I'm 66, and trying to get brave enough to learn how to draw, after not drawing since junior high because I was so bad. I just took a small "drawing for seniors" class, and have drawn about 10 sketch exercises. Every day is an epic battle between "I just can't do this" and "I do so want to do this". I want to watercolor, and I know that I need drawing skills to paint things that I like. But it's so hard to push through the "everything I draw is cringe" stage. I just need to do one sketch a day and not give up, but that is so hard.

It’s harder to go from 4th grade to age 65++ without mourning the lost time- and how there isn’t enough time left to learn all I want to- but it all goes away by just doing art. No longer need or care about judgment- it’s of no use. So remember, don’t look back, because that’s not where we’re going!

When i was 8 years old i was asked first time,"What do you want to become." I instantly replied, "a painter". N i was told in reply ," painters dont earn enough." Next time i never said "i wanna b a painter."Then i studied mainstream subjects "with which i could earn enough." Then i got a reputed job n started "earning enough". Within a year i started feeling low, sad n depressed. N couldn't figure out why i was feeling so empty. Then after 8 years of my job when i turned 31 i watched a video on RU-vid unintentionally of an artist where she was telling how she became a full time artist. That video literally opened, not only my eyes, but my heart too. The artist that was within me playing with me in my childhood just woke up. With the sense of drawing, painting n creating i started seeing hope in my doomed life without any reason. I started feeling joy n excitement once again. Now i m 34 years old, hv collected lots of art supplies n sketchbooks. Make art n draw often. Art is the thing which has saved me from slipping into depression. Now i hv bn trying to find ways to be a full time artist n crafter. Once again ,"I want to b a painter." Had i got this passion n love for art back in my adolescence n College days i wouldn't hv made bad choices in my life n hv bn a much happier person in general.

Your little talks always hit home! I was an artist when I was little. I considered doing art and design in collage but ended up in the sciences... and eventually became a doctor. Sometimes I wonder what my life would have been like in a different path. Art eventually made a comeback in my life during my extensive training to become a doctor and is a mainstay outside of my job at the hospital. It keeps me going when the times are dark. During the stress of early Covid/quarantine It became a lifesaver. Instead of watching the news, I channeled it into my art. Thank you for your channel, it really speaks to me on a deep level!

Love this video. I recently read a book about the types of mindsets people have about learning and achievements. You either belong to the group where you believe that you can only achieve things if you have talent, or group B where you believe anything can be learnt on a master level through failure but perseverance. Lots of examples of great artists who didn't show great talent early in their lives, but worked hard at it,enjoyed the learning process, accepted the failing process and utilized it and in result became great. Their greatest strenght was to realize how you should stop pressuring yourself, enjoy the process and do it without your inner judgement. You must allow yourself to be free and happy for the time you are creating.

I’ve wanted to be an Artist for most of my life. The Teacher at School was an alcoholic waster who put me off. Every time I sat down and tried to actually do something since, the guilt kicked in. “Cut the Grass, Do the washing up, Fix that loose wardrobe door” ab Nauseum. Now it’s 2022, I’m in my late 50’s Gout has laid me up since April. I feel free to start learning without guilt. Thank you Sir for your inspirational videos.

This was just great. I’m 44 years old and I’m finding my way back to creating after 3 years of deep healing work. I had always wanted to paint watercolors, but had convinced myself that painting was for real artists and that I could never learn. Then at the start of the pandemic, I gave it a try. Now I paint almost every night. And it’s opening doors to other kinds of creativity. And my life as a content marketer is no longer enough for me. I want to teach people how to connect to their creativity too. Thank you for this beautiful essay.

Creativity has always been a part of me, and I was encouraged in my art making by parents and teachers. But when I began exploring what kind of artist I wanted to be I hesitated. The often tragic and misanthropic stories of these famous figures was not what I wanted, and it seemed as though my options were to become consumed by my art making or drift into mediocrity. As an adult I can see that it was the personal worldview and life circumstances of these famous figures that led them down such tragic paths, and that there are plenty of examples of artists, in history and today, who maintained a more balanced and peaceful life. Your videos have encouraged me to create a little bit every day to exercise that muscle, and I am slowly overcoming my perfectionist "all or nothing" mantra. Thank you for sharing this with us ❤

Did you say "not caring that the Grups didn't notice"? around 4:50 I think. There was an old Star Trek episode (Kirk old) where the planet they visit has children only. All adults die when they get older/puberty. They call the grownups Grups and the kids are Onlies I think. Anyway this was great. I wrote and doodled, mostly wrote to survive adolescence and young adulthood. Until I caught my husband reading it, as if he thought he was entitled to read my private thoughts. Then I stopped writing but I couldn't contain it, it still spilled out. And if I did write a letter I liked to embellish it with flowers and vines growing around the edges, or illustrate the letter with a little map of my campground, or draw the rowboat I was in or something. Maybe because I always preferred children's books or illustrated novels to the dry text only kind.

Thank you so much for this pep talk, Danny. I really needed it. I've been creative all my life, mostly through writing, but I dabbled with art as a kid, teenager and in college in my late 20s. And then I stopped art and focused mainly on writing for a long time. Then I stopped writing too. A few months ago, I bought some soft pastels and pastel paper and began creating again. Although I am way out of practice, I also began sketching and playing with watercolors and oil pastels too. It feels amazing to create again. Your pep talk, though centered around art, has helped me make a decision - I am going to begin writing again too. I miss it and it is truly my first love, creatively. I won't give up the art though. I'm going to chew gum AND walk or die trying (laughs). Cheers Danny! Thanks for all your videos!

Danny, that was great! I think that's similar to my experience. I used to think painting was embarrassing loser thing, so I gave up. Two months ago, I learned about acrylics thanks to my friend's suggestion for the medium of the assignment of an elective course. I realized painting was sooo enjoyable and thought to start it as soon as possible. I bought paints and brushes and I am addicted. It is a great free space for me, really a way out from this world, an acceptance of myself. It is healing me and I really don't push myself to draw and paint I just crave for it. Note that I have never been that consistent in a thing in my whole life. That free expression is fantastic. I don't watch any tutorials or something not to allow the education kill my curiosity for discovering and pure expression as I did before in many fields. I just love to do painting. Thanks for your video Danny!

Ex O& M-Er too! Loved this video, Danny, along with all your other heartfelt messages. In the last year, I rediscovered art after 40 years away after asking: I wonder if I could (realistically) draw/paint a client’s Dachshund who crashed a Zoom meeting? I couldn’t believe the art “thing” was still in me and how H*A*P*P*Y I was to draw again. As you said, kids feel free and content doing arty stuff, always without self-judgement. The ability to access those states is still in there if we can just open the door a crack and let in some light. Things grow from there. I appreciate all you do to share your heart and passion and skill. Your videos are such encouragement as I re-enter this world. Thanks so very much.

Wow- that's basically the same conclusion that I came to about being an artist which caused me to throw in the towel! Artist= fame or failure... ahhh- love your videos - they are really what a lot of insecure artists need to hear to get them making art again! Thank you kind Sir, for your encouraging and kind videos! :)

Very cool aliens. I see you have a propensity for the two-headed variety. You’re story is inspirational in that you found yourself; and sad at the same time that like me, it took you so long to realize where your passion lay.

So true, the fear conditioned my decisions in life. I also studied Political Sciences. Now I’m trying to rehabilitate the little artist 🧑‍🎨.

This was beautiful and I'm literally crying, I relate with your story but I'm in a career with 0 creativity, when I was in high school the only career I thought would fit me was something related to art. I used to draw every single day, but my dad would tell me I'd be a failure if I pursued art so I did something else, life got busy and I didn't draw for years, I'm successful now but I feel like I'm not being myself or that I'm not truly happy because I'm suppressing what's inside of me, the creativity. I'm now slowly getting back to it, I wish I could dedicate my life to art.. you're so right about drawing not being considered grown up, but we forget we started as children showing our creativity and no one cared if it was good o not, we forgot the child we have inside.

Just have to say this out loud... Or in print. I adore you. No worries,. I just appreciate someone who has your capability to bring a smile and an aha! moment at the same time. By the way, I'm sure that there must be a test out there to show that creative people's minds don't age the same way as less creative. I'm still 7 when it comes to art supplies, sometimes you just have to sit back and admire the genius of a sharpener in that box of crayons.......or kneadable erasers. Thank you for sharing, and bringing out the joy in us weirdos.

I don't care how bad things are working at Starbucks is never the answer. When I was at school I wanted to be an artist but I was also told I would never be good enough. I was good at sketching buildings but not the rest. Now they call it Urban Sketching and everyone does it. Turns out I was ahead of my time.

You give so much to think about. I was not a kid who drew a lot, because when we had art in elementary school I thought my art was terrible. But I wanted to be good at it. Remember those ads for some art school that has a profile picture and said to try and draw it and send it in and you might “qualify” for their school? I often did try to draw those faces. My aunt was pretty good and sometimes we would draw profiles together. I don’t remember trying to draw much of anything else. I grew up and became a wife and mom and 2 out of 3 of my children were amazing artists, one from the age of 2. But I still thought my art looked like a 5 year old did it and believed I could not draw, and wished I could. Until I was interpreting (ASL) an art class in a university. When I wasn’t signing I would draw from the still life displays they had, in a small sketchbook I got. I cried - because although the drawings were small, I found out I COULD draw. Now in retirement I’m taking art classes and still struggle with the sketching parts. I don’t do art as much as I should/ would like to, and I’m not sure why I hesitate so much. Your videos and emails are very encouraging. Thank you. Carol Bell

School told you that you weren't doing it right, or that's not the way it should look or sound. Your were taught to be like everyone else. Retired last Dec from a demanding career in laboratory science and now I'm learning to play again.

I just pencil sketched an old door & did it because of this teacher... who says just pick up from the childhood artist in you and begin again... I did not allow ANY negative thinking spoil my first (in 55 years) drawing. I did it - je suis finis - for now. Thank you for encouraging the inner child and helping quiet the critic. Enjoy all the blessings God gives us!

Thanks for the inspiration, I just did that: I draw and I purchased a set of water colors and a sketchbook. I thought I can'!t draw or do paint. I am doing it for myself. No purpose, no need for any feedback.
