It's so true about the journey, I literally developed a huge stress condition about fighting games thinking I should be better and being afraid of being judged. Took a long time to get over it. I'm nothing great but I'm definitely improving.

That’s exactly what my friend and I have done. Just got the game in July. Been having fun and learning as we go. We practiced a little bit in single player to get a feel for the game and then jumped straight into lobbies. Playing in lobbies helped us learn a lot pretty quickly. It started with “who can get closer to a round win” to “who can win a round”, to “who can win a match” and now win streaks lol. The first night it took us about an hour to win a round online. It was hilarious watching each of us lose but we could see our progress through the night and point out where we each of us messed up. We kept rotating through characters until we started to get a feel for who fit our styles the most. He’s liking ky, slayer, and sin. I’ve been playing chipp, Faust, sol, and may. Chipp and Faust are definitely my favorites though.

Man, i'm really feeling this. Especially "play for 8 hours and never take a game". That's for real. I used to play various Guilty Gears, mostly before Xrd but some Xrd too, but it was never my main game and i was more of an FPS player than anything else. I recently picked up Xrd again and it's like starting from scratch, it's a struggle but i'm sticking with it.

Kizzy that journey is something special I feel like we humble ourselves in the scene in this way and it helps to build community. Cuz now your pushing them to get better and they don't feel discouraged if they're in the right headspace to realize they pushed you to this level and they can get there too. No matter how the matches end up tho they can remember that they used to beat you or vice versa and your not some "random" lol the boyz know you "ight" so they drop the johns and pick up them sticks 😂

I get really stressed and mad when playing fighting games. But after that I feel so relaxed, it's almost -if not completely- therapeutic. Games are supposed to be fun, but also challenging. I don't think I'll ever be a pro, but the feeling of being better and good at something (even if a game) it's always nice. My journey with fighting games is: try to finish the single player content; find my main o mains; up the difficulty to the very max and keep playing; be able to beat the CPU without loosing, without being touched, etc. and then I hop into the online modes and just go with the flow... The moment it stops being fun, the next thing comes!

The journey in a fighting game is always fun to me. My first game I went on that in was BBTag. Very different from GG but it was the same struggle everyone has of course. Matchups, combo consistency, blocking lol. Can’t wait to go on the journey with everyone in strive.

felt good hearing your story, im going through the "process" myself atm, in the past 2 week ive been playing around 40-50 matches in lobbies every day, and I dont win a single time, literally. but im enjoying it, sometimes I get completely stomped and I have no idea what I could have done and what my options were, so I record on ps4 and watch it later and try to figure it out. idk If I will ever be able to beat these guys online, but I feel like im getting better little by little

But after I started grinding the character I like I started working health bars to half. From half to the wire until i could finally get a round to almost a match. That made me so much better. PEOPLE.... it's ok to get your shit wrecked if you willing to learn from it. You losing to that group of people, but think about the other groups of people you could dog for learning from all your losses. I really wish arcades were still a thing

From where I stand, the secret to finding growth in fighting games is to find someone worth doing it with. The journey might be important, but Frodo didn't make it to Mt. Doom all by himself. You need someone to share that journey with. The pain of loss can be stomached, because a good crowd will eventually bring about with it a change in perspective. It becomes more about the fun of doing things with buddies than just simply aiming to win and following their progress alongside your own is both satisfying to behold and reassuring to see that you're not on this ride alone. It's fitting to me that this video is set to footage of Raven match-ups, because he is not just my friend's main in GG, but also what I consider his perfect avatar in fighting games. To him, win or lose, pain or gain, that man is only there for the thrill of the match and plays such a zealously oppressive aggro-game. It's certainly taken me out of my zone. When someone can out-faceroll me the way he does, he's forcing me into a more defensive mindset and through that teaching me how to become better. Then I see him play against his other friends and see him get bodied and I just feel like they are lightyears ahead of me. However, that's how some of my friends feel about me. I got some new blood interested in games like Under Night and GG, so I am playing alongside them as they are learning stuff from the ground level. It's then that I realize how no person is unbeatable, it just takes persistence and a passion for the game. I think about how she could easily beat me down if she just learned my reads and found punishes for my shenanigans and then think that "This must be how my friend feels about me". So I go on, urging my friend to catch up to me as I strive to catch up with my superiors, eager to see who reaches the finish line first, but keeping in mind that it's the steps along the way where the memories come from.

My first fighting game I tried to get good at was Street Fighter 4. Right after buying the game on Steam, one of my Steam friends from Team Fortress 2 saw me playing and asked if I wanted to play with him and that he would teach me since he'd been playing Street Fighter for a long time. That night I lost 100 matches in a row, only got a couple of rounds off him. He would pick Zangief and throw loop me, he would pick Akuma and spam jumping fireballs, he would pick Guile and spam Booms and wait for me to jump over then Flash Kick me. He didn't even really play any of these characters. But after playing with him for a week or so I was able to go smash other new players who didn't lose and learn as much as I had so now I just try to make sure I learn one single thing from every match I lose so its still a win for me in some way.

This has to be the most real fucking thing ever, as someone who's pretty experienced with fighting games, and movement around an Arc sys game, I actually was pretty ahead of most beginners during Strive beta is my 'first real' attempt to play, and learn a GG game though. As soon as I go went practice after playing the game I learned how RC works better, BUT I dramatically got worse cause I choked too much thinking about all the stuff I am trying to remember.

For those of us who have really bad internet (and even worse unfortunately forced to play WiFi for a while) and can hardly get good matches online, what would be the optimal way to improve on myself offline in your opinion? On average I have to deal with 8f-19f delay as well as being locked out of rooms with good connection due to some unfortunate circumstances rn, so I would highly appreciate some advice as to how I can vastly improve until I get a better connection to play others online.

I've had more success, going into practice and learning what I can and cant punish, improving reaction times, what I can and cant get off of different ranges of jump ins, short combos, optimized combos + doing it untill I can do it without thinking about it, learning my tools, learning the cast, learning whose usually popular and character playstyles. Some people learn better by running their head into a wall (brute forcing it), I perform better when I know what the set ups are and why things put me in certain states. If I get hit with tech I've never seen I lab it to see what my options are. I'd rather get hit because I made the wrong decision instead of because I didnt know what something did.

I'm not a good player by any stretch of the imagination, but I think it could be useful. Obviously, being able to beat the hell out of them is useless, but being able to complete your combos and guard strings against a moving opponent will probably help you do those things when you play with a real player. But overall if you have someone of your level to play with, then that would be infinitely better than practising with a bot.

This isn't meant to be an attack on anyone, but it's frustrating how unhelpful every "how to get better at fighting games" video is. Everyone says to practice a lot and to optimize the time you spend practicing, but nobody explains what practicing actually means. Sure, I can pick a character I like, go into training mode and execute special moves over and over until they're muscle memory, but that's just learning the controls, not building skill. What am I supposed to do after that? I watch a ton of FGC videos and I have yet to find an answer to that question. Some people say you have to lose to better players over and over before you can get better and that's all well and good, but nobody explains what I should be looking for in my losses to learn from them. The only game I've had some success in is Mortal Kombat 11 and that's only because as an entry in a super mainstream franchise, it's populated by plenty of non-FGC people and even non-gamers. Meanwhile, even in Granblue which is supposed to be beginner-friendly, I can't go into a single match without immediately getting pinned to the wall and dying to an endless combo because the only people playing seem to know something I don't. To be clear, I'm not trying to go pro (there's no "scene" whatsoever where I live) I just want to be able to win online sometimes. I love fighting games and the culture around them, but I wish the community wouldn't scoff and go all "git gud" every time someone rightfully brings up how inaccessible they are for a new player to get into even casually.

Gotta keep it 100 dude but with a mindset like that, fighting games might not be for you. Its not a walkthrough for an Adventure game the biggest thing about fighting games is self accountability. Ive been almost exclusively playing fighting games for 20+ years and one thing ive noticed is 100% true: People like you who ask for all the answers never make it past intermediate level. Even if given the answers are given Yes this video wasnt filled with info but youve ignored what he said because hes not holding your hand and reading off a list of things you should do People like you dont actually want to get better yall want to try just hard enough to make it look like youve tried everything but failed due to "bad teachings" or whatever excuse is available Getting better at fighting games (and literally anything really) is simple there are only TWO things you need to do: 1. Play people who are better than you 2. LISTEN TO WHAT THEY SAY! The subconscious mind is over 8x faster and exponentially more powerful than your conscious so leaving more task up to your subconscious, you'll grow exponentially faster. There are so many things you'll learn subconsciously just from playing better players. Thats why Kizzy says work on one thing consciously at a time and focus only on that thing Thats what playing better players will do for you. They will tell you what you need to work on so focus your energy on that

@@jdrmanmusiqking I've thought more about my mindset and had this conversation with other people since making my comment. I've realized that while I still have a lot of the same frustrations, they were misplaced. It's not so much that people are doing a bad job of teaching, but it's not that people like me are refusing to learn either. It's really as simple as the fact that it's hard to find people at roughly my skill level online. Yes, getting beaten by better players is important to improving, but there's a difference between better enough to gradually learn from while having fun doing so and so much more advanced that I get destroyed without getting a chance to actually play the game and understand what's going on. After the first month or so of a fighting game's release, the online lobbies tend to be almost entirely populated by the latter (unless it's something super mainstream like Smash or again, Mortal Kombat). I have confidence that's starting to change though as better netcode is getting implemented and the games are getting more exposure to wider audiences. The thing is, I play a lot of games from all genres and I have several other hobbies too, not to mention work and life responsibilities. I'm very much a jack of all trades master of none kind of guy. So it's frustrating that most fighting games, unlike EVERY OTHER hobby or source of entertainment I try to engage with, tend not to be possible to play at that casual-mid level I'm looking for. If I want to paint or play an instrument or the like, I can happily do so on my own, at my own pace, whenever I want. With fighting games, I have to rely on finding other people at a similar stage in their journey to be able to play satisfying matches at all and that just doesn't happen often because fighting games aren't as popular as other hobbies. Again though, good online and good marketing are starting to make finding those people easier.

@@jeremoople @krakkenchaos Once again, your mindset is not condusive to playing fighting games at any meaningful level You make way too many excuses and you dont know what you actually want. Having fun and getting better are often mutually exclusive concepts. You DONT want to get better you want to get better YOUR WAY and your style of improvement is literally the absolute worst. Fighting games arent like painting or playing instruments its the closest thing to sports than actually playing sports. There is something to learn from every interaction youre focusing on tryin to learn while having fun instead of learning to just learn. Instead of asking yourself WHY youre getting destroyed, you just focus on the fact that youre not having fun thus all those useful beatings are being wasted on you A painting doesnt let you know youre trash. The instrument doesnt yell at you for making a mistake. However if you're trash at sports the game and all the players will let you know. Everytime you get crossed over, or burnt on a deep route, or smacked in the nuts by a tennis ball and the crowd reacts, you are FORCED to know how bad you are. Sports and Fighters require a level of accountability that most humans, including your self dont have which is the only reason why fighters will never be mainstream Your mindset is why you'll always be a jack of all trades instead of a Renaissance Man like myself. You making excuses for not being great instead just going out and being great Bruh: 1. I've been a colligiate level athlete in football and basket while being great at pretty much any sport 2. I was highly competitve in pokemon 3. Im currently in the top 20 in the world in Yugioh Link Evolution rankings [Hakim10q. Was #6 but aint played in a month so my rank dropped] 4. I play bass guitar and even played a couple small gigs. Nothin major but its something 5. Ive earned 3 Academic Scholarships going into college. Was getting paid 2k a semester to go to school 6. Ive taught myself how to be an amazing singer and given tips to people on how to improve 7. Other greatness im forgetting so NO EXCUSES! Youve the time to excell at anything u just aint utilizing your time properly *I can tell from your choice of words that youve never attained greatness in any field. Once you become great at one thing, its easier to be great at other things. But if youre willing to settle for mediocrity thats perfectly fine just DONT settle yet complain about not being great*

Too bad the modern "journey" is 99% netplay making 50% of the growth grind inaccurate or incorrect.

Best player in a fighting game means nothing. You became the best not because you are good, but because fighting games are dead. If fighting games are still popular in Asia, you have no chance to defeat those monsters who are currently playing LOL or DOTA
